  • By the late 1800s the free-ranging buffalo of the western plains of North America were almost extinct. This documentary is the story of the buffalo's revival. Live action, eye-witness accounts and archival photos document our fascination with this ancient and legendary animal. By the director of Atonement.
Directed by Michael McKennirey - 1985

Our generation owes an extreme debt of gratitude to those who had the foresight, or just plain luck, to have saved this marvelous animal from the precipice of extinction.

Yeah it's crazy to think that our Government wanted them killed to get rid of Indians but yet saved them. It never should've happened in the first place. There should still be millions upon millions roaming across the plains today.

@@mochiebellina8190 yes man is definitely part of nature just the destructive part of interference with animals! Guess that was my meaning !!!!!!

@@mochiebellina8190, Which man? Nature does not slaughter in masses. Nature respects other aspects of nature by taking only what it needs to survive. The man, or aspect of mankind, that respects nature over greed, yes, those are men, or human beings, who truly reflect nature. Outside of that display of respect for their surroundings, those creatures sound like destructive savages. And there isn’t ANY resemblance of nature in that beast.

At least the narrator got it mostly right. These are Bison, not Buffalo and yes there’s a difference.

Nah, it’s an old video, the crossbreeding didn’t work. The Bronx Zoo had/has a collection of pure Bison and hepled repopulate the herds.

No!!!!!!!!! Why are we breeding Bison with cows? Don’t disrespect the bison like that!
Oh well, just like they got rid of the full blooded Native Americans, they also need to rid of the full blood American Bison.

Beefallo, Yakallo and other stupid crossbreeds. Unbelievable! The next example of stupidity is the crossing the origin survivors of Tatanka yotankas Indian horses in Theodore Roosevelt NP during the 80's. What the hell has an Draft- or Thorough bred stallion in this ancient herds to doing ? Sorry, this is crazy for me as an prof. German horseman.

Well professor, if you look at the format, you’ll notice it’s an old video. Last century is my guess. The crossbreeds failed and efforts to return them to North America are an ongoing effort.
