Yeah!! A well put together review! This really seems like a nice tent. Still too much for my liking, both $$ and practicality for my application. The rack on it is pretty cool though! Looking forward to seeing you put it through its paces on more trips!
The rack is very cool...but they say it only holds 5lbs when the tent is deployed! So if I through a Rotopax up there, I'd need to take it off before opening the tent up. I also wish it didn't whistle in the wind...but honestly my Jeep is so noise on the highway...what's a little more whistling at this point lol.
@@Venture2Roam maaan, 5 pounds? That’s pretty disappointing. Who takes all their shit off their rack before they setup? Coupled with the inaccuracies on their website listing, this feels like the price isn’t justified. It seems like it’ll be a nice upgrade overall, but sheesh. All of those things seem like a huge bummer. Regardless I hope this works out better for y’all!
@winston & Kim I’m not gonna lie, I was bummed and disappointed…and the weight on the rack is kind of a bummer as well…so for now, I’m trying to stay objective and give a real chance to shine as I out it through its paces this summer.
That whistling is definitely from the roof rack on the tent. All those holes. I've had lots of whistling noise from roof racks that have exposed slots/holes in them. It went away once covered. That stinks because it would be nice having more storage space on top. My iKamper Skycamp 2.0 doesn't make any noise. My Rhino cross bars made noise until I put in all the rubber fillers in the slots. Now it is quiet.
Thanks for sharing Brian. I'm going to try taking the rack off to see if it helps with the noise. If so, maybe I can figure out how to modify it. My Rhino Rack Pioneer hasn't made much noise that I've ever noticed...at least not whistling. The truth is my Jeep make so much noise when driving at highway speeds anyway, that it kind of blends in everything else lol. Really appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment!
Did you figure out where the whistle sound was coming from? I am looking at the Tough Stuff Stealth which has the same rack and triangle cutouts on the top. I’m wondering if it’s those 2 cutouts on each side.
I really think it's the rack on top and not the cutouts - but I haven't been able to test it yet. Heading out in a few days on another trip and I'm going to try to get the rack off and test it before then.
I think the OVS 270 is a solid value purchase. My buddy Chris has it and really likes it. I switched because Rugged Bound came on as a Chanel sponsor…and their awning is lighter, stronger, and faster to deploy/put away…and is a true free standing awning. It also more difficult to install and more expensive than the OVS. If budget isn’t a problem, I’d take a good look at it. If budget is an issue, OVS is a good place to start looking I think.
Hi, buddy, thanks for the review. I have the same model but the standard size. The metal work on mine is slightly better, but frankly don’t really care. The lock latch is really low quality for a tent at this price. I am still looking forward to replacing it with something else. Their website stated the weight was 120 Lbs but it is really close to 150 Lbs. Other than these things, I still kind like it. When I bought it, the price included the winter padding and the annex. Fabric is excellent, has led lights built in. Footprint is small on the roof because it folds, and it has room for sleeping bags and pillows. Also the rack is just the right size for a 160w solar panel. Mounted on a frontrunner roof rack with the quick release mounts. Your thumb bolt solution is definitely better (cheaper) Will I buy it today? Probably not. I will definitely look at the 23Zero armadillo as first choice.
Great comment! I spoke with the owners and they are going to validate all of the specs including the weight, so I’m curious to know what they come back with. I’m with you on the metal work, it doesn’t bother me that much. The locks are growing on me, but I might swap them out too. I have the liner and annex too, and overall, the fabrics seem to be really good…I just laid down on the mattress of a Tuff Stuff alpha and was pretty jealous lol. It’s really nice to see another owner’s perspective. Really appreciate the comment.
Follow up is in the works. I'd reach out to them and make sure you are clear the sleeping dimensions and mattress size. There is a wind whistle...I took the rack off of the top and there's still a whistle, so just be aware of that. I have put the tent through the ringer though..and it's holding up nicely.
Good honest review. I'm going with the OVS tent when I can upgrade my softshell. While it doesn't apply to myself, I just always feel like the big size RTT on a Wrangler isn't a great idea. I think if it was me I'd do a smaller size one and my kids would have their own ground tent. I guess seeing those big ones up there always make it seem like it's too much up high when you travel off road. It did look good all setup with the awning and all.
Thanks Travis! A family of 4 in a Wrangler definitely brings some trade offs with it. It’s really cool to hear how you would approach it. For our fam…carrying another tent + bags + pillows + pads in the Jeep isn’t something we can do because there’s no room!! 😂 The weight difference between a smaller RTT and a 4 person wasn’t enough (for me) to worry about…yet…but there’s no “right” way to do it which is why I live hearing/seeing other setups. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!!!
Their website is showing the dimensions of King size sleeping space - 90 x 76 x 50 as of 6/22/2022 seems way off for what you're saying it is. So confused
So…they are not showing you the mattress dimensions…this is super confusing. The mattress is only 70 inches wide. From wall to wall it’s 72 inches inside the tent. The 76 they are showing is not the sleeping area…it’s the length of the shell which is a bit longer than the mattress because of the shape of it.
I don't mind spending 4k on a tent as long as it's quality and will last year and years of use and abuse. I am currently in the market to buy one and Priority is fast setup, quality build, weight and ability to store light blankets. I may just give in and get a super pacific at $13k
Wow….that’s a ton for a tent…but price is relative. Hopefully value is not relative though. Just got back from testing this thing in the rain a few times, and besides a zipper issue, it’s been really solid. More to come later this summer!
@@Venture2Roam it's a camper for the bed with a pop up clam shell tent you can access from inside the bed. Yes, it's not cheap thats why I have yet to do it lol.
Really great video. For 4000 bucks I'm not impressed. Velcro tension straps have failure written all over it. I added ratchet straps to my softshell and it was much better. That key thing is really annoying. I also noticed a lot of manufacturers make the mounting bars longitudinal to the tent. I can't figure out why they couldn't provide a way to switch that back and forth. Or at least make it an option when you order it.
Long term review coming soon where I’ll cover some of those things. But I definitely agree with the notion they should have the choice between mounting options!
I wish this video existed before I spent 3k on my Desert Armor Soldier XL in April 😭 I hate this tent so much. There are so many issues with it, it’s falling apart inside and out and it’s only been slept in 2 nights. Customer service has been horrible! The lifetime warranty is crap and the parts come from overseas just like the tents, which they say will take months to arrive. I have a list of 10 major issues that I have told them about from the moment I opened the box and they will not give any refunds or exchanges once you take delivery or pick up the tent. They told me that my tent must have “slipped through” the quality control department. I paid 3k for what looks like used tent and I’m fuming. 15 emails back and forth and nothing has been resolved, they don’t care about their local customers at all, it’s all about the money.
This is a really sad story to hear...DA is reading these comments, so I hope they see this one too. I spoke with the owners a few weeks ago and thought they were nice folks, but there have been some issues like this that I've heard about. I wish we could try these out before buying them - I was just in a new Rack Attack store today getting a tour, and it reminded me how important brick and mortar stores are because it's the only place Overlanders can see and touch a lot of the gear we buy and depend on! Really sorry to hear about your issues and situation...thank you for sharing it here.
Don’t know about others but $4k for that aluminum work wouldn’t be ok with me. RTT mattresses are what they are. Just a filler for the sale. I wouldn’t have high expectations of any RTT mattress. Even RV mattresses suck. The rest of the tent is basically the same concept as the iKampers. That weird V channel probably doesn’t help with that whistling. Final comment, collapse your ladder before you close the tent.
MPG? Worse than the Smitty? $4,000 for a Wish... Takes balls of steel to buy into an internet ad like that. If I were to invest that kind of dough into a windsail, I would have probably gone local to iCamper, CVT or Freespirit. In the end a solid review. Offtopic... Want to hit up the Magruder this summer?
I haven't noticed a change in my MPG yet...but I'm keeping an eye on it. Yep - it's really hard to purchase a tent sight unseen...sadly that's kind of how the industry works at the moment...especially with smaller brands like Desert Armor. There are some stellar aspects of the tent too. An aluminum shell at 155lbs is really light for an RTT this size. In any case, we'll put it through it's paces and give it a fair review after more use. We're doing the Idaho BDR, which hits Magruder this summer!
…or get a Gazelle T4 Overland and use an Exped Megamat (or two) for a fraction of the price. I’ve used a rooftop tent in the past and will never go back. The setup and tear down of the Gazelle takes just a few minutes…and it stands up to terrible weather (ask me how I know). $4000 for this is absurd.
Glad you’re liking the gazelle, they are great tents. We really like RTT camping over ground tents, but they are very overpriced in my opinion. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and share your perspective!
@@Venture2Roam I definitely wasn't trying to be snarky with my comment. We liked our RTT, but also found that we're more car campers, vs. what (I guess) some would consider overlanders. We like to set up camp and go explore, and, as you're aware, a RTT makes that tough. Now...if I could just talk my wife into an overland trailer...
@@chrisgardnerss You are welcome to be snarky lol....$4K is is a ton of dough. There's no "right" way to do it IMO - just whatever works for how you like to experience the outdoors. I have a big ground tent and a bivy. I'm hoping to use the bivy for hiking away from basecamp this year...but you're right RTTs make it hard to just jump in and go...these hard shell hybrids make it a little easier - but if base camping was my thing, I'd probably have a ground tent or a trailer too!
I'm hesitant to buy a hardtop given I can soft top is a lot cheaper. I can throw the extra 2k saved into a decked system or jackery 1000 with solar panels. A hard top makes more sense on a jeep or 4runner. With a jeep and growing family you should probably look into a Coleman 6 person pop up ground tent. That or switch to a full size pick up truck and get a 23zero 87 RTT that's for 5 people..
After having a soft shell for three years, I was super tired of the set up and tear down logistics. The hard shell design lets me set up in about a minute and breakdown in 5 minutes, which when you camp as much as we do makes a big difference. We started with a big pop up ground tent..and for a family of four…the set up/break down logistics are way way better with an RTT, even a soft shell. Lol on a full size truck…I’ll stick with my Jeep for now..can’t afford a new truck after buying the tent 😂😂
@@Venture2Roam I hear you on setup and break down. I'm just rocking a gazelle T4 and Honda CR-V. It's a lot to set up camp. So, far it's just me and my 3 year old boy. His 1 year old brother is a bit too young to come with. The goal is to get a pickup with a soft shell and decked system. Trying to minimize setup and break down time. Looking forward to your next adventure video btw.
@@delvinmorales9458 that sounds like a great plan. I think Em was 3 when we became comfortable with taking him out…and having he and his sister out there together making memories is priceless…worth any set up and tear down time for sure…but easier is OK too 😂. I hope you share your setup when you get it figured out. Next adventure vid is on the way…it was the trip we shot a lot of this vid on..hoping to post next week!
In case anyone was wondering I just checked their website and they have changed the dimensions back to the first incorrect dimensions ie: 76” width, and the 2” mattress. Super disappointing. I was considering buying one of their rooftop tents but not anymore. Seems like they’re purposefully trying to deceive consumers.
First NO rooftop TENT is worth that kind of money.. but i dont think any rooftop tent should be over $2000. Period.!. And at that price i dont think this tent would be for us. ...but great vid. Sorry you spent so much.
I so agree that RTTs are overpriced. The price on this one still stings…but there are some great features as well…but we’ll put it through its paces and report back. So appreciate your comment..and thanks for spending your time watching!!
Desert Armor prioritized taking your $4000, distant 2nd priority was accurate dimensional info which for most is most critical when considering something like sleeping space. 70" is too short. 2" shy of 6 feet! 6 foot humans is not rare. Who is this tent designed for? That cushion is a joke, high density isn't supposed to squish to nothing like that. Thanks for the warning, I'll never buy their product. I hope they provide you some consolation prize or partial refund.
I agree that I was really disappointed to learn the dimensions were off - and you're right, it does restrict the sleeping configuration..I'm 6'1" so it's way too short for me to sleep horizontally - and honestly that was a big selling point for me to make the purchase. That said - companies do make mistakes, and they did update the website with more accurate specs...sadly, Desert Armor isn't alone in this..my best buddy Chris bought an OVS that advertises a 3" mattress - and it's just over 1"...so I think this is a widespread issue.
I was looking into a Desert Armor, but a buddy of mine bought one and it was absolute crap. Latches didn't work and didn't line up, outer shell was bent/warped and customer service was horrible. Pass!!!!!
That tent is Chinese Crap! Looks like they used a hammer to make that bracket fit. Your trying to tell me Desert Armour does not know the real measurements of their product! I don't buy it. Nope, you can have it.
Sadly, Desert Armor isn't the only company out there with specs that don't match. My best buddy Chris got an OVS Bushveld...in fact, our shakedown was his shakedown too (we traveled together)...and the mattress was listed at 3inches..turns out it's only 1 inch. That's no excuse, but it's something everyone needs to look out for when spending this much money on a tent. I'd be lying if said I wasn't bummed after learning some of this stuff.
@@Venture2Roam Right on. For thatt kinda money...You'd think they would have grip on it especially if someone sends it back because of that issue. I enjoy your content!

Again - so awesome that you like our content...and I really appreciate you sharing your perspective!!
These tents are manufactured in China, along with many of the other RTTs on the market. There does seem to be some variability in workmanship across the board...our old Smittybilt soft shell had some things that were quite right out of the box as well (also made in China). I hope Desert Armor can keep investing in quality assurance and customer service...in the long run those two things will carry them through I think.
@@Venture2Roam I have a Warrior XL from these guys. I'm taking it out on it's first trip this month so not sure yet about any issues with the quality or use of it but I was not happy with the customer service last year with shipping issues I had. They were several months behind schedule (which was pandemic related and out of their control) which created a slew of issues for me to coordinate receiving the tent, selling the old tent, storing both tents, etc. The delay coincidentally overlapped me moving so the delivery location changed, and I ended up having to take possession of the tent in the winter (Canadian) They were not willing to work with me at all. I wanted to cancel the order and re-order it in the spring but they would not refund. Ended up working to my favor because they ended up increasing delivery fees to Canada by $700 I believe but it was still a huge pain in the ass for me. I would not recommend Desert Armor just based on the customer service.

Coupled with the inaccuracies on their website listing, this feels like the price isn’t justified. It seems like it’ll be a nice upgrade overall, but sheesh. All of those things seem like a huge bummer.
Regardless I hope this works out better for y’all!
@@ScaleofTwo being off by 5 inches to me is more than a “mistake”.
@@crazygooseventures I didn’t say “mistake,” lol.
Ive been looking at the icamper. How do you like it?
@@theoceansriver It's been great so far! The 3.0 models make some nice improvements, but I bought the 2.0 on sale so I am happy.
My question is regarding your awning. What made you ditch the OVS for the Ostrich Wing Jr? My wife and I were considering purchasing the OVS 270 LT.
Your thumb bolt solution is definitely better (cheaper)
Will I buy it today?
Any follow up? Thinking of ordering…
Follow up is in the works. I'd reach out to them and make sure you are clear the sleeping dimensions and mattress size. There is a wind whistle...I took the rack off of the top and there's still a whistle, so just be aware of that. I have put the tent through the ringer though..and it's holding up nicely.
So on a side note I'd really like to see what your using to get your tent on and off. It's on of my biggest pains is taking the tent off.
Great idea Jason. I'll do a separate short vid on that!
I'm looking forward to it thanks!
Oh - and my buddy Chris got the OVS Bushveld, which we feature in the upcoming trip vid. Some nice things about that tent!
Really sorry to hear about your issues and situation...thank you for sharing it here.
ude!How are you?. well . 💫
Thanks for the great insights Alan!!! Yes, I learned the hard way how to collapse the ladder lol.
@@Venture2Roam Lets grab a brew or hit part of the trail if you want up North. I am in the CdA area. You will enjoy passing through the Avery Tunnels.
And…GREAT comment! Thank you for taking the time to watch and share your thoughts!!!
That’s really disappointing to hear.
Pass!!!!!
What did you go with?
@@Venture2Roam Go fast camper RTT
I’ve heard good things about GFCs, but not used one myself yet.
@@kenuber4766 So cool to hear you like our vids!!! Here's the real bummer about these tents...once you accept from freight...no returns...that just doesn't sit right with me...there are some things I'd like to see change in the RTT market for sure. Again - so awesome that you like our content...and I really appreciate you sharing your perspective!!
If that's the standard of American workmanship I will not be ordering that
These tents are manufactured in China, along with many of the other RTTs on the market. There does seem to be some variability in workmanship across the board...our old Smittybilt soft shell had some things that were quite right out of the box as well (also made in China). I hope Desert Armor can keep investing in quality assurance and customer service...in the long run those two things will carry them through I think.
I bought this tent and will never again support this company. Terrible build quality, issues since day 1.
Very interested to hear what issues you had. How was the customer service?
@@Venture2Roam I have a Warrior XL from these guys. I'm taking it out on it's first trip this month so not sure yet about any issues with the quality or use of it but I was not happy with the customer service last year with shipping issues I had.
They were several months behind schedule (which was pandemic related and out of their control) which created a slew of issues for me to coordinate receiving the tent, selling the old tent, storing both tents, etc. The delay coincidentally overlapped me moving so the delivery location changed, and I ended up having to take possession of the tent in the winter (Canadian)
They were not willing to work with me at all. I wanted to cancel the order and re-order it in the spring but they would not refund. Ended up working to my favor because they ended up increasing delivery fees to Canada by $700 I believe but it was still a huge pain in the ass for me.
I would not recommend Desert Armor just based on the customer service.
@@msyamashita01 Thanks for sharing this. I think they are a young company that is learning as they go. I love supporting new, family-owned businesses, and I do think they are learning from these comments - but it's really tough to hear stories like this one, when you've spent a ton of money and don't feel good about the purchase.
@@Venture2Roam I certainly can't speak to the challenges they were facing as a company at that time. I can imagine it was a stressful time, but in the moment I did not get the feeling they cared at all about my thoughts. It was clear to me our transaction was done.
