Pity that a few years back this city had an insurgency and response that left around 50 civilians dead (another 40 or so died from illness).

They might try dealing with that, since that is at least partly within their control. Maybe instead of a Muslim separatist insurgency that the greater majority wants no part of, an insurgency demanding a plastic recycling facility. Keep the landscape clean and have some extra money.

The most dangerous place is not Marawi it is The Liguasan Marsh. The remaining terrorists are still there so that's the place that you should go.

I was informed about Marawi and its history by a filipino friend. Everyone i spoke to about this place was scared and adviced me to stay away, yet the people i met in Marawi was good hearted and warm as always.

I knew the family of a Filipino soldier killed in that city by the rebels. I remember when at their house seeing his picture on the sideboard.
My experience is yes your at more risk but that doesnt mean that if your sensible and not to loud you will be hurt. I guess it comes round to if a rebel contact or someone connected sees you. They are not everywhere so you can get lucky like you did.. Saying that you look very Muslim so maybe they assumed the same. I love that partt of the Philippines myself as my wife is from that area so been their a few times.

The problem in these poor areas is there is no discipline in the children and they only respect you on the surface when they think there's an opportunity to get money or something for free.
Most have children very young too with no hope of ever having a good education or raising their offspring with the proper care and discipline.
