My uncle A.Aziz was a very senior High Court advocate and personally knew almost all judges and lawyers including Yahya Bakhtiar. My uncle was appalled when he found out that Yahya Bakhtiar (Bhutto’s Attorney) had advised Bhutto to reject the trial courts. Instead of pleading “Not Guilty” on his first court appearance, Bhutto outright rejected the court proceedings. The first plea forms the foundation of all subsequent proceedings. Later in a meeting, my uncle challenged Yahya Bakhtiar for this gross mistake. This is what Yahya Bakhtiar narrated to my uncle: Going back in history, Yahya had rejected Bhutto’s numerous invitations to join his PPP. One day Yahya Bakhtiar received a phone call from his 2 college going young daughters that while returning home from college, they have been arrested and detained at a police station. Yahya went straight to Bhutto’s office, he was drunk, smoking a Cuban cigar with his feet on his desk. Yahya stated that you will not know about my loyalty if I agree to join you under duress. So Bhutto picked up the phone ordered to release Yahya’s daughters. When they reached home safely, Yahya joined PPP. As a reward, Bhutto immediately appointed him as the Attorney General of Pakistan.
