Brilliant work folks, one small step / one giant leap comes to mind. Nothing to do with being a “tight Yorkshireman” - this is how progress is achieved and without typical R&D costs of £35k or more. Well done - inspirational!
I think inevitably if we had done the 'proper' R and D the project would never have got started - never mind got to the stage of actually moving the boat! Winging it is the way forward!
Hello Dayton! Hope your enjoying the viewing over there... I suppose my narrowboat is a bit 'american' as it's kind of left hand drive... In as much as I stand on the left side of the boat when steering!
@@WingingItBoatingonaBudget People are worried about range, you only need enough range to get around Yorkshire. Anymore would just be a waste of energy.
Extremely! And I can't thank the people who've helped out so far enough... I might be the one holding the tiller and the throttle, but without lots of help it would be a pair of oars I would be using to move 'Nuts n Volts'...
Thankyou. Yes we have tried to keep the story flowing from one part to another... Next step is a proper test drive, then looking into more detail of charging etc...
Was great to see you moving her on Sunday, hope you get to take her a bit further next time. I also got a bit excited seeing our boat in your video lol
Thankyou! And that would amazing if you don't mind giving it a mention / adding a link etc... It would be greatly appreciated. Obviously I didn't do the project so I could vlog it. But there was lots of interest hence the vlog.... Cheers!
Well done indead. Your huge smile and silly grin with "it works!" Made my day😃. Stuff the nay sayers. Folks getting stuck in and having a go is the way R & D should be.
What's it like doing an emergency stop from a decent cruising speed? It takes full beans on a 42hp Diesel to stop a conventionally hulled 57ft plus boat in a hurry!
I'm guessing emergency stops will be slightly more efficient than when boats were pulled by horses but probably not quite as quick as with a modern diesel engine... I guess we will find out when we do some proper testing! 🙈🙈🙈
Impressive work. What was the cost for the electrical parts? What size battery is it? What sort of range? How do you recharge it as 2 solar panels does seem a bit optimistic even in sunny Yorkshire? The engine also seems a little loud for an electric, will it be much quieter with the covers on? Are the revs correct from a bus engine or do you need a reducer? Sorry for all the questions.
Hi been following you for a while looks like you are at tinsley? I am surprised we haven't met when I have come through with my electric widebeam? I have been up and down the flight quite a few times over the last couple of years. Enjoy your fun and games as I know I have with mine and look forward to meeting you one day
We got the boat a year ago and it was late April this year we started the electric drive conversion. Once we have it running properly we will head into Sheffield with it. (Only made it as far as the old don valley moorings so far!). I think your widebeam is a 'proper' electric system, unlike our cobbled together bag of bits! ⚡⚡⚡🤣🤣🤣
No mine has a forklift motor as well, I am looking at yours and thinking it's a pump motor? Whereas mine was the drive motor, my first version I used 12 volt valence batteries like yourself version 2 was 36 volt valence batteries x 30! I use solar for charging both domestic and drive batteries as its what tight Yorkshire men do somet for nowt
Would be very interested to see how long can run before lithium batteries get to safe but flat level. 4kw engine and x kw batteries is giving you x number of hours? You could test leaving boat roped up and just let it run till batteries are safely flat. Interesting in doing something similar if is enough range.
A few 'experts' have done some calculations and come up with a run time of between 2 and 12 hours! So the way I will work it out is by using it and monitoring the voltages etc... So time will tell exactly what run times we can achieve.
I think you will find it hard to charge, the chargers for fork trucks are very big, when I had to sort the charger for An electric fork lift I had to get all new wires put in from the mains with new fuse box, the wires we the size of your thumb, it don’t work out much cheaper in the end as it takes so much power to charge the batteries and they only last about five years, when I had to sort new batteries there was not much change out of £5000, we soon changed to gas fork truck lol
The batteries arent from a forklift - just the motor and control system. I have 16 138ah lithium batteries. They will take some charging... But that's something we are properly looking into now... More vlogs to follow.
Well done your hard work paid off.....now all you need is a safety..guard rail around the stern....
Wow! So quiet! Just imagine the future peacefulness of the canals if electricity becomes the norm.

The gear stick handle is a winner. Great job.
Simple engineering at its best!
I see a very relieved tight yorkshireman!
Very!
Absolutely gutted we missed it but DING DONG FLIPPING FABULOUS. Loved it. Staying tuned for much much more. Ding Dong Bring it on
I'm sure you will see a lot more of it! When you return from your summer cruising!
You’re an absolute inspiration sir. I’ve been thinking about doing this but now I’m planning on doing it. Thank you.
Thankyou...
It's been fun and frustrating at times but fingers crossed it will all be worth it!
Good for you! Ingenuity, perseverance, and hard work brings success.
Thankyou... We are definitely making some great progress now!
Clever stuff. I always think the noise of the engine takes the tranquility of boating away to some extent.
Congratulations, Captain, from Dayton, Ohio, USA!

Maybe we should have called it
Jonny 5!

Yay! The boy done good, congratulations on your maiden voyage.

Very interested in the progress, thanks for the vlogs, and of course for all your experimentation.
Take care all.

Well done mate.
Thankyou!
A multi position rotary switch maybe a good thing to fit, But as your a tight yorkshireman make up a panel with switches numbered in order
Yes we are going to look at better switches and throttle... I suppose it's one thing the tight yoirkshireman might have to prise his wallet out for!
@@WingingItBoatingonaBudget NEVER LOL
Interesting
⚡️Fantastic! Hopefully many more electric narrowboats to come to the canals in the near future!⚡️
It's the way it's going... More electric, less diesel.
What an amazing accomplishment. Well done bud.
Thankyou!

Next journey will up through lock. Chance to let the boat cruise and see how she performs.
Keep a copy of the vlog with your boat on!
Congratulations! It has been truly inspiring to follow this process!
Thankyou. Glad your enjoying following our journey!
Well done you that was good to watch
Thankyou!
Really well done, chuffed for you. If you haven’t done everything right, you came very close. Inspired to try myself.
Well done!!!

Reverse momentum, then use the rudder.

wish i had a m8 that could nick me 16 grands worth of batteries
Not quite... Maybe that much new but used second hand ones aren't fetching 1k each... 💷💷💷
Well done all you build engine better than driving them lol only joking 🙂
My experience:
500 Watt 2 knots
2 kW 4.2 knots
So at 500 W I can motor for 30 hours!
👍👌🇨🇦❤
I don't really have a perspective on how much power the original diesel would have had, but this motor seems to have plenty of power!
The diesel engine would have been more powerful - but it would seem this motor has enough power!
