I miss you Andrea. You've shaped the woman I grew up to be and largely due to this series. Now living in my own house with my spouse I still take a lot of your ideas to heart and am guided by the way you organised.

I love these sitdown talking videos more than ever now. I have them on in the background on headphones while I clean, relax, organize, etc. Not only a soothing voice but such a soothing attitude. Andrea has helped my stress level so much recently. 💕 miss her. Thank you Tom for still sharing her with us.

I decluttered over the past seven years. My husband abandoned the six of us and sold the 4000 sq.ft house, and I had two weeks to clean it out and move. Took three of the children (the other two were grown) and moved to an 500 sq. ft. apartment. Shared a room with a semi-adult (disabled) son. Gave away five bedrooms of furniture, washer/dryer, antiques, everyday things, things I thought I couldn't live without, but I was glad to let it go. Every piece that went away seemed to carry some of my grief. We lived with four twin beds and metal racks to store our clothes and had a living room the size of my closet in the former house. But we survived. Friends still came over. Last year, I moved the three of us across the country to be near my aging mother. I left almost everything behind except for books, my sewing room things, an upholstered chair, a dining room table and chairs that my children love, and one cherry side table that's special. I left a cabinet my dad made 33 years ago. That was hard, but it wouldn't fit in my moving cube. All my dishes, glasses, everything stayed behind. I kept memory boxes for the children and Christmas stuff they remember. When I got here, it fit into a large storage unit. What I realized after he ran away was that all those things were just stuff, just hay and stubble. All those cutesy, pretty things that I thought I had to have meant absolutely nothing in the end. My children love me. God was faithful. I survived. That's all that matters. Today, I see that God released me from a horrible marriage that I would never have taken myself out of because I was a faithful Christian wife. trying to do the right thing.
Thank you. Your way of thinking about keeping stuff for 'in case' helped me let go now without feeling guilt. I am cleaning up my clutter and I was still dithering about one pile that could be useful in the future, but now it is going out the door!

Such an inspiring time I've had listening to you Andrea. I've wrestled with the same problems of how to let things go when we are finished with them. I would feel so much guilt whenI threw things away. Then I would feel guilty and wasteful when I donated things I knew we could probably sell. I would get in such a muddle; I still made the same choices to throw or donate but didn't feel the full joy decluttering can bring. Your very well reasoned and explained philosophy works for me!! I can give my mind that to chew on in the future when it's sorting out time. I learn some much from watching and listening to you. I am very grateful for you here on your family UA-cam channel. Tom, when God put you and Andrea together, he did so for such a wonderful purpose. You both are such a gift. I’m so sorry, He had other plans. You, however, have carried on so much of what she and you had started together. You were an amazing husband and you’re a great dad. So much patience. I just love your videos. O.k., so oftentimes I am biased to your oppinions, because I hare them anyway, but sometimes (not so very seldom) I get an entirely new idea or something that worried me, gets relief by something you said. And it might be "just" to refer to my bible. So thank you for that.
On another note: I also read both books by Marie Kondo and they helped me a lot as well, getting my flat clean. My life is completely different from yours.
I am single, with no kids and then I also live in Germany, which is a completely different continent, culture and whatever else. Still with your videos/vlogs I am reminded that however different peoples lives and experiences may be, there is always a ground of similarity to be found.

This would be a good video to make a short out of. The whole video is full of tips and knowledge, however, starting at 9:31 really made me look at ‘stuff’ in a whole new light. I felt so much lighter and was thinking so much clearer after just watching this.
I’m not sure how you feel about making informational/tips/etc. shorts out of some of Andreas videos, but I figured it would t hurt to ask or to put the idea out there.

I started my decluttering Friday night and still working on it. Thanks for the push I have needed to do this for a long time, my labeler has been getting a workout everything is having a place in my home.
Wow she is so smart and accurate about garbage! My husband works at an incinerator and he said all the trash and even overflow of recyclables gets burned and turned into electricity for the surrounding towns. The smoke that comes from burning this garbage is very regulated by OSHA with many many screens etc and clean going into the air. So don’t feel bad for using those disposable diapers people🙂. I’m so grateful Andrea left these videos they help me everyday not only with organization , cooking but even lift my spirits lately 💗
Well, I can tell you we have none of that here, and they don't have it in california. Our landfill is full and they are preparing to dig a new one.
The Mills Family Hi Tom! Just wanted to say your doing an amazing job. My husband said there is at least 1 of his companies in California in a town of Anderson that burns trash to energy. I’m not sure if you thought I wasn’t agreeing with Andrea but I was agreeing with her 100% about throwing things away. Since watching your inventory video a while ago and doing likewise { taking inventory } I have NOT bought a single piece of clothing for the children because I can see that I have absolutely no need to do so. I know that they have a ton of items for each set and it has truly FREED me up to not purchase additional items. So it's saved us some money there. Thank you for helping with that.
It makes such a difference in purchasing, doesn't it?! You can see and admire cute things without feeling the need to bring them home. I'm hoping to get the whole house on a similar system of inventorying and purchasing. I'm really happy with how it has simplified our clothes.

GREAT job!! I used the same method and worked on our family's clothes this past summer. It is SO FREEING!!! I could still do more! I thought what you shared about the difference between hoarding and just being wise and prepared was excellent and so good for all of us to think on. During Thanksgiving vacation I am going to use this same method and work on the storage area in our basement! Can't wait! :) I SO enjoy your channel. Thanks for all your encouragement. I did this recently and already need to do again. Mari's book inspired me too. It is so hard with a big family to be tempted to hold on to those just in case things! But...oh, the relief when it's all gone and everything is neat! I folded my clothes like this before reading her book. I think it's so nice to see everything you have when opening a drawer. I found I could fit summer and winter clothes in one drawer nicely when they are folded right. Thanks for the inspiration to do it all again. ;) We recently moved our family of ten to 900 sq. ft., so I HAVE to be careful what I keep. I hope to do a video on that. I did do one when we were in our 1500 sq. ft. house. You might enjoy that since we understand each other. ;)

The impending birth of a new baby is always motivation for me to get busy, too. I hope it goes well (both the tidying and the birthing!)
I am watching this video after your passing, Andrea. We didn't see eye to eye on all matters (who does these days?!) but you struck a chord deep in me when you said, "Everything on this earth is going to go back into the ground and return to it's elements, including my body."
I am so surprised to hear you say this, as this is my version of the 'after life'. Its been so difficult for me to grasp the idea of a god or something all seeing, greater, a creator, etc... it just doesn't seem likely to me. No matter how badly I want it to be true, it's impossible for me to believe. But the one thing I do understand is the idea of matter can never be created or destroyed. And the idea of my body decomposing into the earth and nourishing the ground, animals, etc... returning to it's original elements, has been calming for me. I don't want to be embalmed or put in some crazy air tight coffin when I pass. I want to go into the ground wrapped in muslin in my natural state.
I guess I am venting more than anything. I miss your presence on this earth and hope very much you are with God. Maybe I'll find him someday but I don't see it likely :(
Hi Shelbie, If you have ever examined a fine, Swiss-made watch, for example, or looked at all the parts of a fancy car, would you ever believe that watch or that car just came into existence by chance? Of course you wouldn't, and you would realize someone had to make them, and that they put a lot of care into doing so. Well, just think of how much more intricate and special we are than a watch or a car. This concept is one reason I could not NOT believe in God, our Creator. I hope you will soon realize how important you truly are. I'm really missing Andrea, too. I'm so grateful for her videos.

One of the most balanced approaches I have seen to storage. I think I would like to only have 1 year of food stored. Unless God says there is going to be a seven-year famine I won't be saving up that much. I have always liked to have enough plus a little, anything more I feel is being greedy. I think a lot of people struggle with greed, it doesn't lend itself to relying on God as our provider.

I love clean up and timed work games!! I am so lame I even have a little timer on a cord to wear on my neck for fun. I love to do something for 20 minutes, read for 10, work for 20, read for.....etc.;
Also, a looooong time ago on a Mary Tyler Moore episode (remember that show?) she was taught to clean a room starting at 12 o'clock and working around the room. I still use that technique, especially after I've had company. LOL! xoj
Also, I keep a 4" and a 6" cardboard or plastic square in my laundry area. When a piece of clothing comes through that has seen its last day, I will cut as many squares as I can out of the item right there on my dryer top and store them in a box nearby. Periodically, I stitch up patchwork quilts. The kiddos love to see their old clothes in the quilts.
We love timers and I do the exact same thing. Work on this project for 15 minutes, clean this room for 8 minutes, read for 9 minutes, repeat. It's very motivating!
we clean up by category as well. really helps the younger kids stay focused.

I am seriously going to get those books and read it. I am always re-organising my cupboards, then they get all disorganised the I re-organise them again differently. I will be nice to have just one way, one method.

We have the monkey baby outfit on your pile @17:03 It's one of our favs and has been worn by a couple of our babies. This has inspired me to take to out basement tomorrow to deal with some hand-me-downs I haven't sorted through that a friend gave us. I have been wanting to tackle our basement ever since our move but I'm usually so overwhelmed by the day to day.
I have 7 kids so we have a lot of clothes lol I find I'm decluttering and donating every time I fold a few loads lol
KIM&KIDS , I only have two children (1 boy, 1 girl) and I feel like I am taking out 1 or 2 things to add to my donation box nearly every load, too. I marvel at my friend who has 9 children. I don't dare try and complain about moving clothes around when I think of her.

love your channel but you are wrong on this. not everything is biodegradable and goes back to the earth, which is why there is so much pollution and a reduction in natural resources used to make these items that are NOT biodegradable and do not get recycled back into the earth. these natural resources are not self replenishing.
Just keep in mind that on the world stage, the "issue" is never the issue. We could debate the fine points about whether or not something is biodegradable, but we'd have to use the information fed to us by, basically, extremely untrustworthy sources that financially profit from us by making us guilty for living _and_ that financially profit from causing us to quarrel amongst each other on this and any number of other topics. In the end, I hope you do what you feel is right with your garbage just as I do with mine. No matter how the "powers that be" would like to convince us otherwise, it really is just garbage, after all.
i throw my things away too! sometimes you just have to go with the sanity-savers! haha just correcting your statement on more matter not being created ;) also, this non biodegradable material gets burned and DOES pollute the air more than most ppl think
Well, matter cannot be created nor destroyed; it can only change form. (Of course, I have to trust someone else to believe that, too! ☺)

Hi Andrea! I curious to know how you decided on how much to keep of clothes for handing down...or for any future children? Keeping one of the dress clothes, snow clothes, etc, made sense. But I have so much trouble deciding on everyday clothing; sleep n plays, onsies, etc. We are expecting our sixth baby in January, and I have always kept EVERYTHING from baby to baby. However, I really have way too much. Space is running out and it is all so overwhelming! My only issue is, how much to keep for possible future babies? I have such a hard time with coming up with a good number for items. Sorry if you answered this question and I missed it. I really enjoyed this video! It was very inspiring and motivational. Also, I am going to put that book on hold at my library.
My method is to get rid of everything unless it's something I'm really partial to. I buy new clothes for each new baby and other than the dress clothes, snow clothes, etc. you mentioned, I don't hand anything down. I donate it all and everyone gets new things. Since we don't have giant wardrobes and I don't buy expensive clothes, it works fine for us and I don't have to sort through and store lots of clothes. Every 6 months I go through everything with my inventory method, decide what needs replaced and shop for those things. Anything worth donating gets donated; otherwise it goes in the garbage. I kept a bunch of new baby boy shirts in this video because they were brand new and in colors we wear, but if we have another boy it's likely I wouldn't keep them after he wore them unless they were still super clean and nice. I really enjoy shopping for each new baby and it makes those few things I do hand down seem much more special.

I am watching this many years after it was made and after this dear lady's passing. At first, I was going to give my opinion on what I thought she could do better . As an example using the clothes as hand-me-downs more efficiently. Then I got hit by the notion that I have way too many clothes and I have wasted money, space, and time on clothes I have no use for. And I need to take care of my shortcomings and not worry about other people's faults and shortcomings. I am heading off to the closet now.

The attic is still a big mess, but the clothes section looks nice! I just finished doing our books this afternoon so I'm still making progress. I got rid of almost 600 books and my shelves are still full. I'm not really sure how that works!

No, my mother passed away. I think I did say it in a confusing way! My mom bought the dress for Eden shortly before my mom died which happened when Eden was 3 months old.

Wow great job! How many hours in total would you say you spent collectively working out on this chore? Regardless, it was time well spent.
It only took about 6 hours total. I would estimate if I was starting from scratch and had to go through all of our current clothes, too, it would've taken 8-10 hours, but all of our closets were already in order.

We pick up using categories, and KonMari resonates with me for that reason, too! I'm still on clothes, but it is so freeing to have fewer pieces if clothing for our family of nine already!

Just a question about keeping the sizes..when you say you will keep one in each size..with some of your boys so close wouldn't they be wearing the same sizes? I have two teenage boys and they wear the same size.?
Right now, all of the boys are different sizes, but you're right in that when we get more teenagers who are slowing down in growth and settling into the same sizes we'll probably need more than one thing in those sizes. We're just not there yet.
Given your stance on throwing clothing (etc) away, do you still recycle regular kitchen/food things? If so, is it hard to do that where you live in rural Wyoming?
We have a compost pile for our garden and our bunny and our dog eat a lot of foodstuffs, but there aren't any recycling programs in our community. I donate clothes and other items to Salvation Army which is 60 miles away. There are other places to donate clothes/household goods 30 miles from us, but they are more difficult for me because of requirements to make appointments, use boxes instead of bags, etc.
You mentioned a book you were reading. I was just wondering how you structure your life or make your kids behave well enough that you have time to read so much. I feel like there's much time in the day for a mom.

Since I was a little girl I've always wanted to know how to live a good life. I try to learn and ponder ideas and I can't help but want to tell everyone else what I'm discovering. (I really like to talk!) When I was little I'd make magazines and when I learned about Public Access tv I was fascinated by the idea of having a show, which is interesting because I'm a very shy person. As a newlywed, I had a mailing list of friends and family that I'd send out homemaking newsletters to. When I discovered UA-cam I thought, here it is! Here's my outlet for sharing! I thought about doing it for about a year before I finally jumped in. I just hope to share what I've learned in hopes of spreading happiness to many other homes!

I forgot what video it was on, but I didn't mean it as a bad thing by saying your all natural and crunchy granola. I just would be so worried about home birth, but I do have many medical issues so I would be to scared.

I feel the exact same way about throwing things away - you bought it, it's yours to do as you please, throw it away if you don't want it anymore. It is very difficult because some people don't understand and feel that product is going to waste. The issue is, if you kept it and didn't use it, it is going to waste anyway. I don't see the point in killing yourself to ensure this previously unloved product goes to a loving home if it means you're going to stress about it and avoid the effort so you end up keeping it. I just throw it away and let it go - and it's okay! :)

It's a Brother P-touch PC Connectable label maker. I love it and use it for just about everything.
