    Coming to the Zf from X-T5. I used vintage manual focus lenses so the Zf just let me make better use of them. I understand people wanting aperture rings tho. I would want it too. I do like being able to use full on modern lenses from the Z lineup tho. I have the Voigtlander 40mm and it’s a lens that definitely feels like it was made for that camera. Matches perfectly

    Sigma bringing their “i” series lenses to the z mount would solve the lack of aperture ring problem. Hope they start doing so early in 2025.

    am switching to the ZF from my x-t5 because of the auto focus / firmware issues. I absolutely the af and especially amazing manual focus. don't care if the lenses have f rings. Your ferrari comparison is absolutely correct.

    I am in the same camp as one of your earlier commenters. I too left Fuji for all of the reasons mentioned here, and I use the Zf with all fully manual lenses. These are all third party lenses. I do wish I could use the fantastic AF on the Zf, but shooting manual, I am only using focus peaking, and the ability to zoom in to focus. It has been ok so far, as I use the Zf more like I would my 4x5 field camera, slow and deliberate . But not having the quick af capabilities has made me rethink things going forward. I am about to sell off my XT3, and pick up an m43 camera to be able to use their af capabilities the way I want to, and for the price, and size of their lenses. One thought though with Nikon. The third party lens makers could really cash in if they would make more af capable lenses. I primarily use Voightlander lenses. I think they are better than Nikon glass, but they are manual. I ave a Laowa macro lens that is razor sharp, but it is manual. I also have a Sigma, and TT Artisan lens for the Fuji, and they are both very good lenses. I see lens makers like Viltrox, and others making Z mount af lenses, and it causes me to want to spend money with those makers over native glass due to price. If these companies can give us the option of using an aperture ring, I believe they would take a big share of the lens market. In the past, I have used many more Tamron, and Tokina lenses than I used native glass, and have been perfectly happy with the results. So many thoughts....

    I agree. I think a 40mm f2 AF with aperture ring would be stellar for Nikon. The courage to make the Zf and then not make a dedicated lens tips the scales a little more in favour of reckless than courageous - lol

    First off, with the Zf ALL of the Nikkor Z Mount lenses can be set up so the Focus Ring on the lens be Dual Function depending on the camera AF/MF setting. Note, this is an In Camera setting which will be applied to ALL lenses that do not feature an additional Control Ring. If you go into the custom control settings and select Aperture for the "Focus Ring" it will then control the Aperture if the AF is on and revert to Focus control when the camera is set to Manual Focus. BTW, this can be Either/Or with lenses that have an AF/MF switch. Nikon does offer lenses that feature an additional Control ring that is by default set to control the aperture and it will work perfectly when the sub command dial on the body is enabled, giving two means of setting the aperture at the same time. The lenses that feature this additional rings are as follows. The 24-120mm f4 S features an extra Control Ring. The 35mm f1.4 and the 50mm f1.4 "budget" lenses both feature an additional control ring. I will also note that while not S line quality both are the the finest 1.4 aperture primes in these focal lengths Nikon has ever made, so they are actually excellent lenses at a reduced price level. Then there is the 70-200mm f2.8 S with an additional control ring, another stunning lens and perhaps the finest 70-200mm f2.8 ever made. The 400mm f4.5 and 400mm f2.8 both feature an additional control ring. The 800mm f6.3 features an additional control ring. The 100-400 Zoom has a Control Ring. The 14-24mm zoom has a Control Ring. Needless to say there are more options with the Zf than many realize. Bit of a shame is that the Z7 II doesn't feature this particular Focus Ring option in the custom controls.

    I think the new 1.4 35mm and 50mm Nikkors with their programmable ‘function’ ring is probably the best native option currently. Granted its not quite the same as having ‘clickable’ aperture, but close. Or get the Voigtlanders. Done.

    Really interesting video, Phil. I am lucky as I have several cameras, including the X-T5, X-H2, X100VI and Nikon ZF, so I can experience quite a few different shooting methods. I am also looking forward to trying out a couple of them next year (May 2025) when I will be visiting Esslingen. Happy New Year to you and all your subscribers and viewers.

    My current setup is: Nikon ZF with 24-120 f4 zoom, 40 f2, and 26 f2.8, as well as a Fuji X100VI. The Fuji doesn't get as much love as it should, and I may end up selling it sometime soon. What I'm most temped to do, is grab a Voigtlander 50 f1 lens for my ZF, and save my pennies for a Z8 or (hopefully) redesigned Z7 in the near future. As much I like my 24-120 zoom, it's quite large on my ZF. The ZF absolutely shines with primes. Happy new year. Keep up the great work.

    I wanted the Zf badly, but the display and lack of aperture ring lenses were majorly offputting. I almost went to a Df instead, but the lack of a native split prism killed that. I ended up with an X-Pro3 which has the best of all worlds.
    I still want a Df 😅

    It’s not native, but a megadap ETZ adapter will let you use Sony lenses and third party e mount lenses that have autofocus and aperture rings. I have the sigma 50mm f2 “I” lens in e mount on my Zf and it runs perfectly. AF isn’t blazing fast, but fast enough to still use it professionally. Also works with manual lenses like the voigtlander 35mm f1.4 where it allows eye confirmation and everything.

    I have/had Fujifilm XPRO 2, XT2, XF10, GFX 50R and also Nikon DF, ZF and ZFc - Nikon’s autofocus - especially on the ZF - is years ahead of Fuji’s. Not having an aperture ring on the lens is a non-issue, you have it on the front dial - you will dial it even with one finger. Also you have third party lenses on the Z mount with aperture rings. Fuji’s AF is so bad that there is no question on the choice - I’ve had AF fails even on single point AF with the subject in the center.

  • @ndviet92

    there is actually a Fujifilm X to Nikon Z mount XTZ autofocus adapter made by Shoten Kobo in Japan. With this adapter you can use Fujifilm lenses on any Nikon Z bodies. They even have a list of lens that works and from what I can see most of the Fujifilm X lenses will work, including aperture ring operation. This probably suits the Zfc more however, as you’ll have to use DX mode with the Zf.
    Not sure if Shoten ever ship globally, but there’s another XTZ autofocus adapter made by unknown brand on Aliexpress, alledgedly cheaper too but they don’t specify which lens works or not afaik.

    I didn’t read the comments on the video you reference, so maybe I’m about to rehash that discussion. But I find your thoughts quite interesting. I shot Nikon for 35 years, starting with the original FM. After the D700 I switched to micro four thirds for a decade, preferring something smaller and lighter. Two and a half years ago I returned to full frame and at that time the Sony system met my needs best. But one thing I did not expect is that all of my Sony lenses have a click-stopped aperture ring and I found I love using it. I no longer have a dial on my Sony bodies set to adjust aperture (the front dial on them controls focus mode). When the Zf came out I coveted its nostalgic design but was not willing to trade the aperture ring for a shutter speed dial. To me, the retro experience requires both. The answer was the Megadap adapter, allowing me to use my aperture-ringed Sony lenses on the Zf. One of them requires too much digital correction - which the Sony bodies do automatically - to be practical for me on the Zf. A couple others are larger than I want on that body. And I did pick up one Nikkor: the 26mm pancake lens (with its ring set to control aperture) fits in a small bag where other lenses do not. But since setting up the Zf, the only time I use its front or rear control dials is to change focus modes. Otherwise, it works like my old FM when I want some retro photography fun.

    I have been thinking about the ZF, but I am on the fence, having Z6, Z7 and Z8 already.
    I also use my FM2n a lot and that works with aperture rings only 😊. But actually I don't mind using the dial on the back of modern cameras.

    My x100vi was the first device I’ve had with an aperture ring.. it’s cool I guess but not something I ever miss when using my Nikon Z8.. I actually can’t think of a major benefit to it at all.
    But then again even on my x100vi I use the front and back wheels for my ISO and SS.. never twist the manual dials that takes forever.. so switching aperture with the front real on. My Nikon is calm

      I was the same when I moved from Canon & Sony to Fujifilm, but after a while + shooting film I started to use that aperture ring more. Now I also ended up with the Leica M system and here I have to say it is somehow addictive and satisfying to use the aperture ring with these high quality clicks … 😀
      Thanks for watching as usual and happy new year to you and your family!

    The size is the main issue for me. If they could have made the Zf the same size as that beautiful FM2 I would have gone for it. Look how much better it looks sitting there next to the bulky Zf. The Fuji is much closer to the ideal dimensions.

  • @AndrewZander
    @AndrewZander 3 дні тому

    There are quite a few current Nikon lenses that have a function ring that can adjust aperture. Not exactly the same, but it’s pretty close to having the aperture dial that Fuji users are used to. Unfortunately, the Zf doesn’t come with one of these lenses. If you really want the manual experience, you could adapt any of the many Nikon manual AIS lenses, which have aperture rings.

    I think it's make sense having some lenses with aperture ring.. It's a good idea. But i don't Nikon Nikon will make one entire set from 14 to 135 to make someone migrate now. It's one huge investment. But...they haven't done the 28 1.8s. I just think it's an new era. Maybe they will make some, I can see in the future, but I don't see they creating now a entire sistem that could be marked now. I agree with your points but for me Fuji is not strong enough. Thanks for your thoughts! Happy new year!

    I think, that it exists minimum 11 Prime lenses from third party manufacturers with aperture ring and AF already. I don't know, why so many users couldn't use Google to research the market... And, btw. of course, you are right, it exits too less AF primes with aperture rings and especially such lenses from Nikon.

    No manual settings, just really good fast autofocus, very compact on a f/2.8 aperture.

    If you are in photography business you should know that big 3 alao never fixed there issues in the past or current. Zf would be great if Nikon released small premium primes , metal build with apreture ring and not pile of plastic following “S” line. But let’s be hinest Zf is a side kick of Nikon and I doubt they will release mkII of the camera.

    I love aperture rings too and shoot both Nikon and Fuji. Saying you won’t switch to Nikon because it doesn’t have a range of aperture ringed lenses is like saying you wont buy the latest Ferrari because it doesn’t have a carburetor. I still have have old Nikon DSLR with nikon ais full manual lenses which I still love using and kept for good reason.

    • @nickthaskater

    • @jimpap13
      @jimpap13 2 дні тому

      @ thats why every motor manufacturer is moving away from manual transmissions not to mention new age gen can’t drive them. Not even motorsports have a full manual transmission. E

    • @nickthaskater
      @nickthaskater 2 дні тому

      @@jimpap13 and yet Gordon Murray and Pagani just launched hypercars with manual transmissions. They've moved into the boutique, which a Zf absolutely fits. They're also a hallmark of "retro," "engagement," and "full control," which again is the Zf.
      Mass market manufacturers moved away from manuals because automatics are now cheaper to produce and achieve more efficient fuel economy numbers to meet government regulations. Racecars moved to sequential (not automatics) because their only concern is speed and consistency, not driver engagement.
      If you shoot fast-paced professional work, get the latest DSLR style body with contoured ergonomics and fingertip control dials and shoot with all of the automation you like. The Zf is not for that. That'd be the Z6, Z8 and Z9.

    Sehr gut analysiert. Nikon macht viel richtig, aber hat gleichzeitig zuwenig Mut oder die Erbsenzähler im Konzern zu viel Mitsprache bei Entscheidungen die vielleicht nicht sofort, aber in naher Zukunft neue Kundengruppen und zusätzlichen Ertrag bringen.
    Leider werden auch viele gute Ideen bei Nikon gedacht, dann aber Mangelhaft umgesetzt. Beispielsweise die Imaging Cloud und das flexible color picture profile. Beides würde perfekt zur Zf und Zfc passen und wäre für aktuell unzufriedene Fujifilm User eine weiterer Anreiz in ein neues System zu wechseln. Ob diese Features, welche ja schon für die Z6III UND Z50II verfügbar sind, irgendwann mal per Firmware Update zu Zf, Z8, Z9 gelangen, weiß leider nur Nikon selbst. Aber Nikon schweigt hierzu schon beharrlich 8 Monate.
    Schade um die vielen Möglichkeiten, die Nikon nicht sieht und die vielen Kunden, welche dadurch nicht hinzu gewonnen werden.
