Please bring mr Whitehead back, again and again. He is a very good storyteller and we all believe he has lots of stories still to tell.
Well done Harry I still remember you in you uniform and military pack salute my friend
I have listened to this guy more than 3 times.. must have been a naughty guy
What a character 😂😂. Full of life and great experiences. 👍
The late George Windrum served in support commando , after the war he returned to Belfast, and worked as a welder in Harland and Wolff shipyard . One day George got into a dispute with a foreman , now this guy had never heard of the RLI, and fancied himself as a hard man, he didn’t realise he was dealing with a commando, but he learned the hard way, and got a pasting….😂
Good one Harry, nice to see you are catching up on a dop whilst doing the interview 😂😂
Did you know that all excellent schools standing today were built by Rhodesia. And all the best infrastructure was built by you guys. On behalf of some uncorrupted black people, I would like to say THANK YOU RHODESIANS.
And Lowelin Baracks, KG6 , Thorngroove etc...Rhodesians you brought to us more good than harm. What draws us back is our black leaders' arrogence because they cannot stomach that they cannot match your success.
I also forgot to say Thanks for the badass camouflage. Its effin awesome ...em dummies just took over every good ting and ran it to the ground.
Thanks for bringing Harry's story to us all. Many parallels between many of us young Rhodesian lads. Many of us skated the knife edge between lawful and criminal existence. I'm also in the southwest of Florida and I wish him all the very best.
Very nice and entertaining chat with Harry John. You should bring him on every now and again John. It was a very nice episode and I think if Harry thinks hard enough you could hear some interesting tales 😂👍🏻👏🏻.
I agree
Excellent! Thanks guys! I know it sounds strange but there's something very relaxing about listening to these stories, feels like for a little while no one is going to judge you, others have been through alot too! 🙏
What a skabanga. Great interview
Thoroughly entertaining chat, thanks gents
Sp Cdo were on standby for Chimoio and we sat all day at Grand Reef but did jump into Tembwe a few days later. It was Major Henson at that time. A lot of guys in the Commando did their Para Course in Bloem from 77 onwards. An interesting interview. Thanks. 🙏
Excellent interview 😊
Very entertaining, I remember Harry so well, he was a senior when I got to GFS in 1974 in Lancaster House, I was shit scared of him.
Great interview John and Harry!
Informative and amusing, Harry's brand of humor is always refreshing!
What a 'great fun' interview! REPS was certainly heaven on earth for us juniors, Harry.
I remember that chopper crash. I was still a schoolboy then. We were travelling home from Bulawayo and while travelling through Gatooma we heard it announced on the news. A terrible incident indeed. General Shaw’s son actually ended up at Marandellas High. We were in the same form.
Funnily enough when we were going into Porkers on Op Miracle I remember a guy attached to Armoured Cars who was a part of a support team. He was a Belgium National (ex NATO) he had a Trilux L2A2 scope fitted to his FN. looked awesome.
He became a war correspondent after the war and was shot and sadly killed while covering a conflict.
Thanks John, & Harry.
@FMR good idea to ask the guys more about their lives after the war too
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to your stories, you have a unique gift of being able to tell a serious story in a light hearted way, thankyou for your service.
God bless.
Amazing interview much respect
Great chat John and Harry! Many thanks - love to hear more from you some time soon!
😂Thank you a good Laugh 🎉
Lance Corporal... the best and worst rank in any army.
You're given enough responsibility to get yourself in trouble, but since you're only a L/Cpl, they're quite forgiving too.
The best part is that you're still one of the men, not really seen as an NCO until you try getting your mates to do some arbitrary chore.
You end up doing most of the work yourself, but the job gets done.
I shot with the R1 while with the Transvaal Scottish, after training in the SADF on the R5 in the Armoured Corps.
It was fantastically accurate, so I'm not surprised it was used as a combat snipers weapon.
I have not had such a good laugh in months, very entertaining cheers boys!
❤ Love it!
Harry, long time no see. We were in the same intake at RLI. We had Sgt. Atkinson (RLI) and Sgt Botha (SAS), as our training NCO's in training troop. Stay well. John, another awesome interview. Stay well, brother.
Good interview... Sandawana emeralds... I know of some brought out in an obvious way, but pretty clever nonetheless; they were covered in mud and pressed into the tread of a vehicle's under-slung spare tyre. No sure that there was much chance of many being found really, small things and so many places to hide.
Thanks John and Harry very interesting, but not giving away to much. Yes, I do remember that terrible incident on the 23 Dec. 1975. I was at Mount Darwin in the Op’s Room when that Alouette 3 Helicopter serial no 37 struck overhead cable and crashed killing all Rhodesian Officers on board, Col. Dave Parker; Major General Shaw; Captain Johnnie Lamb (Adj.) Sergeant (Flight Engineer Pieter van Rensburg from 17 Squadron SAAF.
Part of 2 CDO went to Parabats at Bloem The next bunch went to Serum !
Hilarious .. smacking the CSM. 😂😂😂😂
Most guys interviewed were from Bulawayo and passed through Plumtree for their education, just my observation 🤣
My brother served in Support Commando about the same time. Funnily enough there are Whiteheads on both sides of my family.
based and green/white-pilled.
My Dad went to that crash.
I see Ken Roberts in the diving course picture.
Mtoko JOC 215 yeah! Lol
What a character 😂
Well done Harry and John. Always fun Harry. Remember when you came to GF. 😢
Two characters!
Love you Harry always salute 29:20
Clive Mason ex Royal Marines KIA
Crazy Rhodesians even guys that got shot were considered "sick, lame and lazy ha ha❤
Clive Mason is still with us - if it was the late Mickey Mason (ex SAS) brother we are talking about.
Temporary sgt Clive Mason Selous Scout sniper Kia 19 March 1977
Good Evening John/Hannes.. Meet a lovely lady at a Braai last weekend, ex BSAP And actually went on to serve with ZRP until 1995.. Amazing history from her and the Kak she had to deal with.. She is keen to share her stories, but shy and dose not deem herself worthy.. Silly Woman.. Actually needs a bit of confidence.. Not Shuwa how to make Comms with you one on one so as for you to make Comms with her and perhaps only perhaps you may get a bit more of a Wonderful bit of history on record....??
Regards Charlie
