This video doesn’t mention that the island is regularly used by Inuit hunters. No one lives there, but it’s a traditional stopping point. The only major thing in the island treaty was both countries agreeing that Indigenous use of the island be unimpeded regardless of ‘border.’

I kinda miss this old ridiculous border dispute, it was fun to talk about it.
By the way, the reason why it was not split in half (50%) is that they set the border along a geological feature that can be seen in satellite imagery…

Please check this out. Canada has 2 strange border configurations with the USA. One is called the "The Right Angle" and the other is Point Roberts Washington. Both areas are geographically part of the Canadian land mass but are in the USA. Those locations are not even connected to the mainland USA. Residents of those areas have to drive into Canada first, then drive back into the mainland USA across another border crossing.

When trying to get to his new home he was refused entry to Canada because of his criminal record and sent back to Washington State where he no longer has a home. No mention was made of how this issue was resolved. I wonder if he ever made it to his new home?

I spent a week as a relief Light Keeper on Machias Seal Island in the Grey Zone. Both countries fish in the Grey Zone under their own fishing regulations. This is unfortunate because the US protects from overfishing by size limits, but Canada does it with seasonal fishing and closed periods. Because both systems are used in the Grey Zone, the lobsters take a beating.
I really enjoyed my week on Machias. Other than having breakfast together, I seldom saw the old guy who was the senior light keeper. I live on Grand Manan Island which you can see next to the Grey Zone in the vid. Have a great day all.

The maritime border dispute on the Atlantic side between the U.S. state of Maine, and the Canadian province of New Brunswick has to do with another very tiny island called: Machias Seal Island. Canada has claimed it for a very long time. The Canadian Coast Guard staffs a lighthouse on this tiny island. There are so many U.S.-Canada border anomalies, as many of you probably know.
Point Roberts, Washington; Northwest Angle, Minnesota; the Quebec border with New York state and Vermont are interesting if not confusing at times. This one with Denmark however has a fun history which is mentioned in the video you are sharing and are commenting upon. Given that the Inuit being the First Peoples in the north of Canada and Greenland (Kalaallit Nunaat), the people up there frequented these islands long before European colonialists arrived. It makes sense that this particular island is now shared between the two nations, peacefully and in agreement. 😉👍

There is an important difference to make, which you can probably understand as a UK citizen. It's not Danish territory, but Greenlands territory, Greenland is it's own country in a commonwealth with Denmark, part of the kingdom of Denmark (not the country). It would be like saying England has a land border with the US because of Canada, it just doesn't really work like that.
The reason the Danish army handled it is because Greenland relies on us for military and foreign policy, but the territory is Greenland strictly speaking. We were technically speaking protecting the territorial integrity of Greenland, not Denmark, as part of the constitutional agreement between Greenland, Denmark and the Faroe Islands.
