I know what you're saying! I have an airfix Bf 110 old tool kit, which to be fair is pretty inaccurate in a lot of ways, however its also the very first kit I can clearly remember building, and will be built as part of a group build with my modelling club where we will build our first ever model again!

it was my first kit that i can remember building , it was unpainted , all the decals where not straight and by the time i got it home on the train, all the props where missing, but thats why i love airfix to this day @@philsmodelmaking2260

I vaguely remember building this kit back in about 1965 - I was 10 years old - and got told off when I took it into school for a 'What I did on holiday' show and tell because of the 'Bit 'O Lace' decal. Strange days indeed!

what a great story! i seem to remember that the real aircraft sometimes had to have saucy artwork toned down, i think one B17 was christened "bigast boid" after the crew were told they couldn't have the name "big assed bird" painted on the side of their aircraft!

    • @philsmodelmaking2260

challenge is right! even though I'm pretty much building this out of the box, the amount of guns and turrets and quite a big (albeit un detailed) flight deck I'll have to get inside, is making it feel like its a kit with a full interior!

Challenge? Yes. Fun? No. Old school modelling skills definitely required. Admittedly I can't be bothered when there are just much more pleasurable and satisfying result alternatives today.

yeah, lots of turrets and guns to deal with, like most kits of this time has very little internal detail, but still seems more complicated than something like a Lancaster or Halifax. ( I can see your thinking in building the black bitch!)

this will be the only the second time I've built this kit! the first time is the built one in the video! didn't notice it at first, but this kit has a date stamp of 1962 on it, 5 years before I was born!

When I came back, I built a 1/72 Airfix Hampden and a DH.88 Comet, both re-boxings of original 1950s and 1960s moulds. I've got to admit, revisiting destroyed any 1960s nostalgia. Admittedly I had a lot of fun with what was available in the day, but my expectations back then were commensurate with a child of 'the day'.
Now these days 1/72 isn't my thing as I find it physically demanding of the fingers and eyes to the point of frustrating and a waste of time I could be putting into 1/48 or 1/32 which I enjoy far more and rewards the invested attention to minutiae. But that said, out of curiosity and inspired by the box art I recently built a NEW era mould Airfix 1/72 kit (Bf 109E-4) to be pleasantly surprised by its parts fit and attention to detail for 1/72 in comparison with yesteryear. Kudos to Airfix, for 1/72 very nice, especially the decals (Cartograf) with an instrument panel and a zillion stencils all of which laid down nicely with Micro Set & Sol. Masking its miniscule 3 part canopy however was the stuff of nightmares. Good luck to those who can cope, but I think my 1/72 days are a halcyon past memory.

I have a Hamden I've been building on and off for quite a while now, I have added some aftermarket parts to it, but built right out of the box it wouldn't be a bad kit. the comet however is truly showing its age.

@@philsmodelmaking2260 The Hampden (1968) A04011 is dreadful in comparison with the Bf 109 (2012) A01008 mentioned.
Nothing fits without endless pre-fitting, sanding and-or cutting, the transparencies are like old glass Coke bottle bottoms, & the Vickers guns, good for Airfix of the day don't pass muster. The decals are scant as is detail is even for a 1/72 kit.
The shape of the Hampden wingtips is wrong, and I'm not even critiquing Airfix's rivet madness trend of its particular period. I'd be miffed if I picked it up at a Series Four kit price today to discover the contents. As was, I picked mine up for a song when Hattons were selling Airfix a few years ago, before Airfix denied supply.
In comparison, kudos to the brand the fit on the 2012 tool Bf 109 is as good as one could expect of a modern kit in 1/72 even today, the mouldings crisp and fine (wing MG/FF, aileron tabs, pitot, aerial), the transparencies thin. Even the panel lines are actually fine in comparison with the almost signature Airfix trenches of this era.
That Bf 109E stems from 2009 tooling which was one of the initial NEW TOOL releases from Airfix bringing their toolings albeit kicking and screaming up to contemporary standards. And, unlike their Bf 110C-2/4 kit released around the same time, they did a great job. It compares favourably with a 1/72 Dragon He 219A-0 (1991) 5005 and an Italeri Me 210A-0 (1998) 077 I built in terms of fit, detail, etc.
The 1958 Comet understandably, is a dog. Its singular redeeming feature is that it's an only show in town dog and the new decals to build other than Grosvener House were nice, Black Magic in my case. Although the only bit of magic that box contained was the artwork.

my Hampden certainly has had a lot of work done p/e interiors, some vac form glazing, wingtips changed with lights added, new resin engines, and bombs and shackles replaced, which made it the most expensive free kit I've ever built! @tonian3906

I never got my hands on one of these back in the 70's either, up to now I've only built this kit once, which is the one featured in this video! as for tips, I've been modifying the upper gun turret in a way to make painting easier, that I'll feature in detail in my next video about this build.

@@philsmodelmaking2260 the products available to make the kits today are a quatum jump on our youth. To avoid the humbrol shine i took up Historex figures using Windsor and Newton oils. I briefly tried Testors acrylics on Monogram 1/72 kits at 16 but any, and i mean any skin contact left oily detailled prints. As for the safety warning....
I'll look forward to the next episode.
