The Batman is the latest movie from DC, but it manages to set itself apart from the rest of their slate. In this video, I go over Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson's take on the Dark Knight, and why I think it works so well.

I didn't really like it all that much. The scenes were really well shot, great cinematography and great casting/acting. My problem with the movie is there is waay too much exposition, the villain was boring, imbalanced themes, the story is so clunky barely adds up, has quite a few plot holes, and the characters felt really flat. After I watched it I almost forgot afterwards, but there were some pretty cool scenes though. I'm a pretty big batman fan, but this movie simply let me down.
I love that Matt Reeves got complete control over his own movie. Didn't feel like there were a bunch of hands in the pot. That's when DC is at its best

I'd be willing to bet that the studio insisted Thomas and Martha not be too corrupt.
The "cover-up" kind of reminded me of Two-Face in Batman the Animated series, whose repressed persona was caused not by some terrible secret, but something pretty innocent.
Riddler's endgame felt a little tacked on. It worked, but it felt weirdly underwritten compared to the rest of the film.
I got $5 American says Catwoman's mask originally covered her whole face, till some exec demanded her mouth show so people could see she was "hot."
The Batmobile was awesome, and that scene was incredible, but it didn't actually feel like it was needed for the story, more like it was added because audiences expected it.
Finally, the Joker cameo felt like a studio decision. It didn't add much, and hardly felt like a revolutionary take on the character, far from it. It was almost like he was the voice of the studio itself, saying "That's right, kiddies, we got more familiar crap to sell you."
Obviously, none of these really hurt the film in any significant way, and in some cases, made it better. But yeah, this film feels a bit like Batman Begins, where the film was more the vision of the filmmaker than the studio. You can kind of tell with these franchise films when they're conceived like an ad campaign, with fresh, original ideas being a kind of optional, if they appear at all. This one feels like the big idea was just "reboot Batman, in case the DCEU is unsalvagable" and Reeves took it from there.
Warner Bros ONLY control when the director is so terrible that they don’t have confidence in.

@@rottensquid Matt Reeves wasn't trying to make the Wayne's evil, just human. All the other things you listed were Reeve's decision too, he had a very specific vision for the batmobile scene.
At the beginning of the movie, the man he saved from thugs was cowering from him and begging him to not hurt him.
At the end of the movie, the woman he saved was clinging to him, because she saw him as a beacon of hope.
That transition during the final act where he realizes that simply beating up criminals isn't enough to bring about the change he needs is quite nice. I feel like that’s when he went from being a vigilante to being a hero.
Omg I didn’t make the connection between those two scenes, but that’s so cool! I really like this version of batman - the acting, The writing, the sound and the visuals are so good!
The film has a similar change in colour and tone with it starting at dusk/beginning of halloween night as Batman attacks criminals and ending with dawn/start of a new day as Batman is helping the citizens of Gotham.
That man he saved being scared of him was really striking to me. He has good intention but is feared by everyone and then he just stands there in moral ambiguity. I thought it was beautiful when he became the symbol of hope at the end

The Batman is not supposed to be a "symbol of hope" though. That's Superman. The Batman is supposed to scare people.
I love how Pattinson’s bruce feels like a boy who never really got the chance to grow up after seeing his parents die. It just feels very raw and accurate to how many of us would be after experiencing something like that.
Not to mention the constant reminders of the tragedy from the media and others.
PEARLS
The main difference between this Batman and Nolan's Batman is that Nolan's had already gone through 7 years of travelling, combat training, and soul searching BEFORE he put on the suit. So by the time, he came back to Gotham and became Batman, he knew who he was, what his goals were, and how to execute them.
I have a feeling this Batman put on the suit FIRST, hit the streets, and then preceded to learn and find himself while on the job. Which would explain why he's a bit more sloppy and emotionally unstable. He's still a raw and unhinged Batman-in-training and needs more time to develop that God-like competence. 2 years is still very, very little in the grand scheme of things.

@Mirklok It's 15 or so years after the death of his parents as "Year 2" Bruce is 27 years old. Are you saying all those billions of dollars couldn't secure a good therapist? I can understand a vengeance thing, but PTSD...not flying.
Personally a big highlight for me was just how good the movie sounded in the theater. Not just the score but the bark of the gunshots, the thud of his boots in the distance and the roar of the batmobile all sent chills down my spine and made the movie that much more fun to watch

THANK YOU. The sound design is something no one seems to be talking about. I literally cringed and recoiled with every punch, every gunshot. (And truly lost it when the Batmobile started up.) What an impact 🖤
yeah it was nuts. im an introvert and i watch a lot of films. massive collection and im older. but yea i had to see this shit in the theater and it did not disappoint
I like how you touched upon how Pattinson plays Bruce outside of the suit. To me, not only did he seem uninterested in being Bruce, he also felt very self conscious, and almost afraid, like all of his confidence is just drained when he’s not behind the mask. I found that to be a very interesting and unique take on the character.
Yeah, that's true. He was like a shy child, barely able to speak to other adults.
And it's why I can buy villains not figuring out who Batman is, in this film and the answer to the mystery fits perfectly with Riddler's crippling need to be smarter than everyone in the room.
Being Batman is far more important to him. Batman is who he truly is. Plus, after being out beating the shit out of bad guys all night long he’s probably tired as fuck all the time and doesn’t want to deal with petty bullshit lol
I like how he behaves more like someone who has experienced real trauma, having trouble functioning as a "normal" person or even a "normal" billionaire.
Just reminded me of that scene SPOILERS where Bruce thought Riddler had figured out his identity, and his eyes shift into the ground and his mouth quivers.
This movie definitely has one of the best opening sequence imo. The facts that all the villains just constantly looking into the darkness expecting him to show up is crazy and bone chilling to me.
Definitely one of the best depictions of Batman striking fear into criminals. Unlike other interpretations where the criminal would look out and Batman would be there, they look out and Batman is not there, but the looming darkness still scares the shit outta them BECAUSE of him.

It’s just so freaking horrifying, and I love it so much. Batman is just so feared that criminals committing the crimes feels like they are going to meet him sooner or later.
@Blake N really? In my opinion, I think it characterizes this Batman pretty well. Unlike Nolan’s or Snyder’s Batman, Reeve’s Batman is a little weird in the head, and he is not afraid to show it. The narration feels like his way of showing how Batman tries to glorify his actions.

I feel like we witnessed the birth of Bruce wayne as an identity in this movie though. Like to me there seemed to be a real lightbulb moment for him when he realised how easy it was for him to get around the club as Bruce

Yeah when the mayor talks to him during that funeral scene, and Martinez smiles almost automatically and tries to talk to him ...
He could have been so much more, and helped more people. They actually like him, and he didn't even have to do anything because they just feel bad about what happened to him. They're not resentful at all over the fact that he's rich.

For a three hour movie, The Batman went by really fast. It definitely had the feel of watching a graphic novel in live action, right down to cliffhangers and monologues.

I don't get the bloated complaints or that they should have cut 20 minutes of it.
Had they done that, fans would have complained that they wanted more development for certain characters or they didn't explain this and that, labeling them as plot holes.

This is exactly how I described it,it's not a comic book movie it's a graphic novel movie, one which i absolutely loved
Between The Batman and Snyder cut, I prefer 3 hour The Batman because it is more balanced film with style vs. substance
Personally, I really love the addition of the eyeliners. Other than addressing Batman's disapearing eyeliners in mainstream movies before this, I think it really adds to the gothic aesthetic in this world Bruce lives in.
This is my favorite batman. Never did I ever find it cheesy, even the eyeliner. It all seemed practical, brutal, a means to create presence. Even his cape is used to hide in the shadows and as an emergency flight suit with a parachute.
There's something deeply dark about this Batman and I couldn't get enough of it. He literally appeared and dealt justice like the Grim Reaper. Yet he wasn't godlike or invincible. He still took hits, he still got knocked down, he still failed, yet he always remained as a force of nature.
Also, it's great that he feels like an actual detective.
This is really the first Batman movie where it feels like Batman himself is “the main attraction”. Absolutely everything is in service of growing Bruce as a character, and it’s an enormously compelling journey.

But not a good thing ...Catwoman wasted,has no character, the Riddler is a patchwork of better movie killers with actual plans, Penguin's character is in the movie for literally no reason other than a carchace, Alfred is immune to explosions, Batman is immune to explosions, Gordon is only on screen to read things out loud for Batman or to play Captain Obvious, there's absolutely no real detective work going on since they just believe everything the last guy said yet half of the 3 hours is spent on detective thriller homage scenes, the third act (or fifth act, I dunno) makes no sense and has no place in the film at all bcoz it turned into another film and the villian's motivation changed just so we could have some big set piece for the final act.

This ENTIRE movie is a 10/10 MASTERPIECE! We have a batman movie where the best character in the film IS Batman/Bruce Wayne! Robert Pattinson is the BEST batman I've seen and he's PHENOMENAL as Batman AND Bruce Wayne entirely while still given him a new stylized look that's FANTASTIC to see! Love this movie to death as it's the BEST batman movie, felt like batman: the animated series BEAUTIFULLY brought to life with it's gorgeous Art Direction and aesthetics! MASTERPIECE of a film throughout!
Yeah Turturro has the long face to look like a capo. He'd definitely look the part in a Soprano's episode.
Too many incredible casts in this movie, they're all awesome and they really showed their own signatures in the characters.
He reminds me of Adam Sandler as howie in uncut gems.
This entire cast was spectacular. I always enjoy Jeffery Wright in movies. Great actor. Zoe Kravitz was amazing in this. Turturro, like you said, incredible. Paul Dano gave a wonderful performance. The biggest one for me though was Robert Pattinson. Neither me or my friends expected to like him in this role as much as we did. We walked out thinking he might just be the best one.
I enjoyed that the main antagonist of the film is actually Bruce Wayne himself. His negligence and inability to manage his fathers company and get on top of their finances is the root cause of the destruction and degeneracy that is running rampant in Gotham. This is a coming of age moment for Bruce Wayne as he realizes that his juvenile approach to vigilante justice is too small scale to actually have a desirable impact, and by engaging in it, he is shirking his responsibilities as Bruce Wayne where he could have a much more potent impact. The emotional toll this must take on Bruce is immense, his denial of the call to action has real world costs, and now he has to face them.
I LOOOOOVE how heartfelt the ending journal is, there's something campy about the whole movie like Bruce's degree of emoness but he sells it, or penguin's goofiness, Bruce displays the same sort of corny poetic style of speaking in his journal in the beginning it's just edgy, he's still a child by the end of the movie he's just one that has finally opened his heart again, so of course it has this overwhelming poetic style and he's pouring his heart out and he doesn't care if it's cheesy

One thing to note about this Bruce drenching himself in the Batman persona is the fact that this is probably the first live action Batman where we get to see him being able to go mobile as Bruce while concealing his Batman gear in his big jacket and backpack, with his eyeliner intact. Other incarnations usually have to come prepped with all the gears from the batcave and so forth, but in this Bruce doesn’t waste time to go back home or retrieve them in his lamborghini trunk but instead has his stuff all packed up everywhere he goes so he can slip in and change on the go. He’s the Batman 24/7

If you look at his 'street clothes' they're baggy enough to fit over the Batman armor. I'm guessing he has the cowl, cape, and other items in the backpack.

Something I really liked after that first trailer dropped was how many people lost it when Batman ruthlessly beats up that one guy then says the 'I'm vengeance' line. That was the moment that got all the big reactions, and I even remember one reaction where after he says that line, the person went 'that's what he's meant to be' and I love that the film basically says that Batman being that way is not a good thing.
I think this film did such a good job at reminding people that Bruce Wayne is a broken and damaged person, and whilst seeing him beating up criminals is cool, that's not what makes him a superhero and if that's all he does, it's a problem. Certain earlier versions even if played well by good actors I think forget that with how they're written.
Is Batman in the comics more of a Humanitarian or Justice from the Shadow's? I hear that was a complaint that by the end they turned him more into a Superman type savior and not so much Vengeance anymore. Is that a fair criticism?

@@Charles-ij1ow he is both, he may be "dark" but he's still a knight if you get what I mean. The only time Bruce's mission was ever purely about vengeance was his first few years as Batman, when the rage and grief were still fresh, and he was younger and naive. His years of crime fighting, and the children he took in (particular Dick Grayson )greatly tempered his anger and forced him to look inward and become better. So nah, it's not really good criticism in that sense.
One of my favourite scenes is where Selina talks to bruce through the lense and Pattinson reacts like she can see him, self conscious and suspicious at once
It may be an odd comparison, but Bruce Wayne without his mask in this movie felt very similar to The Mandalorian when he was without his mask as well; An ultra competent badass was suddenly looking very lost and afraid without it. It was a great touch.
I gotta say Riddler was way less of a deviation from the comics/tv show than I was expecting, he was just a bit grounded. But that same dude who writes goofy riddles as a way to cope with his insecurity and attention seeking is there, and I thought Dano was pretty over the top (which I enjoyed), and I think you nailed it. He wants to be this intimidating badass but comes off as just a lame nerd, which is exactly the vibe I get from Riddler in most Batman media.
Edit: guys I know this is a completely different interpretation, I am simply saying he captured the spirit of the original far more than I expected.
I'm not a big fan of the Riddler as a character but the version in this film played by Paul Dano was awesome and actually terrifying. I never felt he was trying to do some Joker impression.
Umm.. its a take of various Batman's rogues gallery into one story arc for riddler.. wouldnt say his accurate riddler more like accurate iterations of some villians..

I've seen criticism of how Pattinson played batman and Bruce Wayne as "almost the same" but I don't think this should be a criticism. At this point he is finding the lines and boundaries between Batman and Bruce and at this point in just life/trauma that fact they are conjoined makes so much sense. Loved this film, this is how Batman has always been in my mind
Basically Batman in this movie has yet to be the Batman we know and see in most of the movies,
If Batman is a Knight, than this Batman is a Squier, he has yet to take up his oath, he has his Armor and skills but he has yet to be a knight and much like some historical Knights tend to struggle between his violent nature and what people expect him to be, (historically Knights started out as just Thugs, people fear for their lives whenever Knights appear, till people create Romances and Chivalry a fairly informal code to keep them in line and act and do their best as was seen for their time)
In some cases the previous batman series is always a hurdle to 'reintroducing' Batman because of strong preconceived notions as to who they think Bruce and Batman should behave in YEAR 2. The Batman definitely is more about Gotham than the previous movies and it is probably for the better. Besides Batman's development I like seeing how our timeless side characters also grow with Batman/Bruce into their future roles. Lt. Jim Gordon didn't become Commissioner on good deeds alone and will have to deal with his fame and relationship with Batman. Old DA is dead so Jim also gotta deal with the bureaucracy that will ensue up top. Ozy Cobblepot went from capo to crime lord so he's going to make power moves to stake his claim in Gotham.
Yeah people don't understand how accurate this is seeing as it's YEAR TWO. He isn't Batman yet--he's still Bruce. He shows it too, where he's obsessed with vengeance for most of the film. The final act shows Bruce mature though, and he realizes Batman can't be Bruce's innermost desires. Batman has to be a symbol that cannot be misconstrued because the danger of that is catastrophic.

I love the eye makeup. It not only pushes forward his perturbation but also is the only movie to address that every batman wears “disappearing eye makeup” and uses it instead of pretending it doesn’t exist
I really loved their new take on the Riddler. He’s always been a narcissist when it came to Batman history, and while it did show a great dynamic of Riddler always proving himself by heightening his games on Batman, it never showed him as a true psychopath but more as a little child who always envied the better sibling. In this movie though, he IS a psychopath and I think they did a great job of portraying Riddler as a more realistic villain.
Also that Batman and Riddler Arkham scene was outstanding. Props to Paul Dano
Paul Dano is such a wierd presence, but obviously, a top notch world class actor....
This is actually the first Batman film where the main protagonist finally lives up to the title of the world's greatest detective. Bruce doing actual investigative work is what made "The Batman" so phenomenal to me.
Really? Because he’s at least one step behind the Riddler at every stage of the mystery’s unraveling - the latter himself says “You’re really not as smart as I thought you were”.
This is not to bash the movie (which I love), but Batman is not The World’s Greatest Detective here. He’s more akin to a detective from a traditional noir (a la Se7en).
@@WanderingPropeller My thoughts "exactly". This was definitely an all-around clumsy Batman. Which is ok if they want to span his character arc over the/a trilogy.
@@WanderingPropeller you have to remember this is only two years into Bruce being Batman and he’s never dealt with a villain as smart as the riddler, there are so many moments where he shows he’s young and still a little new to it so it really gets annoying when you’re all making that a big deal of why this isn’t a good movie. He’s new and that’s what the whole point of this movie was. He’s learning how to be a better Batman and he’s realizing that he needs to be better as Bruce as well. He was always one step behind because of his inexperience with this type of criminal
I disagree, but it's not exactly bad as Batman's still pretty young, he'll eventually be the world's greatest detective, but in this movie he hasn't had enough experiences to live up the title, as he did fall prey to riddler's final riddle at the end there, not being able to reach the bombs in time. It's still an amazing movie though, we can already see the world's greatet detective in the making.

In the movie's reality, I think the Thomas Wayne mistaken scandal is a pretty interesting tool to show just HOW corrupt Gotham has become. It's so bad even someone who is undeniably good gets obscured by the grime. And the fact that it is a mistake, that Thomas only asked for help, just help, and out of desperation, could be taken as a deep calculated corrupt move by those that came later shows the level of distrust that had taken root in the citizens.
Also the part I caught and really hope they lean on going forward is Martha Arkham. Bruce's mom and grandmother are/were mentally ill. That take can explain why Martha becomes the Joker in some timelines, and might even explain Batman's obsessiveness and hint at him even being possibly ill himself.
He is "ill". He's got CPTSD, survivor's guilt, and traits of at least one personality disorder.
Can't wait to see a psychiatrist dig into it. It's good.

Thomas just wanted Falcone to scared the reporter, but Falcone saw a chance to blackmailed Thomas so he instead killed the reporter. The reporter was corrupt anyway (Maroni's pawn).
@@edba1.037 what I loved about that plot line was that it not only furthered the overall theme of "sometimes you don't see the bigger picture", but it also showed us that even though Thomas Wayne screwed up, he didn't let it define him and was determined to do the right thing in the end.
It felt so genuine and real, and yet at the same time feeling like something out of a comic book story. And you know what... that just makes the film better
Robert Pattinson has had some great films over the years and I'm still very confused on why everyone was bashing him just because he was in Twilight
because its popular to be complacent. Twighlight is a goofy adaptation of a teenage - intended novel, and it has its audience. Patinson is one amazing actor, and there probably would not be a Roberts Batman without Roberts Edward.
the one thing that i also kind of loved was how a lot of the shots of rob as 'bruce' made him look like a feral creature of sorts. he alludes to it himself in the beginning voice over when he said that "2 years of nights has made him [some sort of] nocturnal animal". but the shots of rob's back when he's changing/shirtless, his shoulders blades protruding out almost grotesquely like wings, even the way that rob chooses to stand with his shoulders rounded inwards and his head low is very reminiscent of a bat. i don't know if it was an intentional choice or direction but i thought it did the subtle job of telling the audience that bruce isn't just the batman but a human imitating a bat just to cope with his brokenness.

This version of Batman isn't interested in putting on the billionaire playboy persona yet. His only focus is being Batman. That's why even in the funeral scene he doesn't say much and barely responds to anyone because he's a man on a mission. But it'll be cool to see him evolve into a more traditional Batman that manages the public image of Bruce Wayne.
I adored how this film gave Bruce a damned good reason to *be* Bruce Wayne in future installments. That was brilliant.
I hope they have Bruce become his more playboy billionaire persona in the later films, that was my only major problem with this movie
It's would be cool to see him evolve into someone who helps Gotham equally as both batman and Bruce Wayne. Wayne using his influence and intelligence to create meaningful change by day, and batman using his detective skills by night.

The Joker was a film about a broken man becoming Irredeemable, than The Batman is a film about a damaged man becoming a Force for Good! This film Batsuit is my favorite, the suit was Batman utility belt. The whole cast did an amazing job.
Reminds me of how we all go through trauma but it’s how you respond to it that makes you a villain or a hero.

I really liked how they made Batman much more relatable and more human in this movie. Like he is not totally juiced up, he does not have flawless execution with everything he does (as you mentioned), and you can see he's a very damaged person when he is in his Bruce persona. He's not a superhero, he's Batman.
I really appreciated the underlying lesson Bruce Wayne learned that while he can do good as Batman, he can also do good as Bruce Wayne.
What makes The Batman great? In short, it has a heart, it tells a story, and it makes you feel something, it’s genuine and sincere.

I’ve said this many times before, I like Robert Pattisons Bruce Wayne even if it wasn’t intended. In the year one Comic, Bruce Wayne was very dark and introverted, before realizing that he can do good as Bruce as well as Batman. I think Pattisons Bruce will evolve in the next movies, as he should.
Ths basicallt felt in line with what I'd think a Batman: Year One film adaptation would be like, and you know you did something right if you can compare a movie to one of the most important Batman GNs ever written imho.
this instantly became my favorite batman movie. i grew up with all the original films and the animated series, and i love both christopher nolan and the dark knight trilogy, but THIS is unquestionably my favorite batman film. the cinematography and performances were on another level, and everything about the way these characters was interpreted for this story was just brilliant.

That show is criminally under-rated. It had big shoes to fill following Bruce Timm's work, which probably created a huge bias against it. But I always loved that take on an animated Batman. Plus I love his dome-shaped cowl. We haven't seen that in live-action yet.

There are so many placed the next movies can go to, and most of them look thrilling. Batman assuming the role of proper Bruce Wayne, doing his part out of the mask as well, Joker is going to be hit or miss, there is no inbetween, Robert putting on some muscles... it could be a great franchise

I must be lost. I love the idea of Batman going full detective. But his lack of detective skills ( he thinks he found Selina Kyle because she's wearing the same shoes someone else is in a picture. And Selina wears her mask and takes it off with those same shoes on through out the movie), the thing he was investigating, where the investigation leads, the riddler's riddles, his rhetoric, where the answers to his riddles lead, the runtime at the end, where it keeps hinting at and hinting at something spectacular (only to end in an explosion with a flood), was all supremely underwhelming. Especially the retconned Wayne backstory that was left ambiguous between two distinctive points of view. Alfred taking twenty minutes to throw away a bomb that should have took him two seconds to notice what it was. It was supremely blah.
I loved the atmosphere and the casting but the story gave me zero emotional payoff.
My antithesis to the Batman, in terms of story and atmosphere is ready player one. I almost hated the virtual character design yet the story outside of the nostalgia was extremely heart warming.
@@VonJay I think what often happens with characters like this, who've gone through so many reboots and revisions, is we can't help coming in with our own ideas of what the story should be. Nothing in this film is a ret-con. A ret-con would be if this was a sequel that changed something the previous film had established. This is a retelling of the Batman story, changing a few details of the character from previous versions. We have to accept that this is its own version of the Batman, and accept any differences from the previous films, comics, cartoons, and games, or we're not going to get the benefit of a reboot. So if the story felt blah to you, it may be because you wanted it to be something else. You may get a different experience seeing it again, knowing what it is going in. But only if you let go of what you think it ought to have been.
With any detective story, you're going to run into flaws in the logic. The logic isn't the point, it's just the thing your brain fidgets with while the meaningful story plays on your emotions. Chinatown has a major gap in its logic, that just doesn't matter to the actual story being told, about corruption, and about the main character trying to solve a logic puzzle when a horror story was unfolding in front of him.
That's kind of what's going on with The Batman too. While the Batman is trying to solve the Riddler's little puzzles, he misses the bigger picture, which is that the Riddler isn't that different from Batman. That was the real story. The ambiguous backstory about who killed the Waynes was a part of that.
On the other hand, if this film just doesn't work for you, that's totally legit. It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the story, or anything wrong with the way you're viewing it. It just means it's not for you.
Personally, I'd rather one of these reboots actually risk being new and different, and turning some people off, over trying to be too safe and doing nothing original.

I love that the movie shows as good as he is, he's only in his second year and really green at this. Pattonson's profile looks so good in that suit. The way the guy at the beginning was scared of him vs the end of the movie with him helping people was a great nod to the change

The cinematography of this movie literally took my breath away. Every shot just looks so good and the choreography looked very grounded without anything over the top.
The acting was really good and the stakes were high. This is by far my second favorite Batman movie as I still prefer The Dark Knight but I REALLY want more from this Batman.

One of my favorite qualities about the Riddler that this character really executed well was his overconfidence. Part of the dynamic between Riddler and Batman is that Riddler is still a smart man capable of many things, but he frequently puts too much confidence in his plans and views them as perfect and unbeatable, while Batman remains pragmatic and adaptable, understanding his skills and limits, knowing when and how to adapt to a situation
The scene showing the fear of the criminals is something I waited my whole life to see.
I agree - all the crooks bricking it when they see the sign because, and the film plays with this, Batman could be in the shadows or the alleyway and then the ominous footsteps with the score like an Imperial March - that is freaking awesome.

Since the first film covered political corruption, the next could be about corporate corruption. If Mr. Freeze is used, then Gothcorp can be involved and Bruce could even use his persona as a billionaire to get inside the corporate underworld and gather information.

I love how this Batman was shot a little like a horror thriller movie. I actually liked that. Even at times, they shot it like Batman was the ghost. Made him feel terrifying, which is what criminals should feel.
I loved the broody Bruce. He seemed like his real persona, Batman, neglected his former life. Like hes ripped, but malnourished and scarred. He cant separate who he really is and his real life has suffered for it. He cant go out in the day because his eyes are completely adjusted to the night, he hasn't cut his hair in what seems like months or years, and he's done nothing publicly with Wayne tech. Its genius and totally realistic like the rest of the movie.
This movie is PHENOMENAL. It’s 3 hours long and honestly feels like 2. THE BATMAN is literally everything I could have ever hoped for. I love the film’s take on the character and love how dark the movie is. It derives a lot of inspiration from Se7en and the source comics. Batman is dark, moody, and ultra violent and I love it. Paul Dano’s performance as the Riddler was also absolutely incredible. I also think this version of Catwoman is the best thus far. The visuals of this film are also beautiful, and may very well make it one of the best films ever made from a cinematography and lighting standpoint.
This film provides proper competition for The Dark Knight, and is honesty my new all time favorite comic book movie!!
I agree, I've been telling friends about it who haven't seen it yet and I tell them, "It's second on the list only to The Dark Knight." Maybe after some rewatches of both I might switch that around. But The Dark Knight is gonna be a tough one to beat.
This movie was fantastic. I think my favorite scene was towards the end when he comes down from the scaffolds to engage the bad guys. I think this was actually the best "entrance scene" of any Batman. It's not exactly an entrance scene, but we didn't exactly know at what point he would show up. Point is, this scene made me sit and think, "Yeah, BATMAN."
I almost didn't see the movie for my general distaste of Catwoman. I'm glad I still went, she works perfectly! She feels more like an actual human than her entire film resume thus far, and the very messy, but genuine heroic empathy she has is what I'll always remember this one for (generally aligning with the evolved personality she's gotten in comics). It felt kind of intentional, that Bats was really failing her with empty cliches about revenge, until the last minute when he connected with her as a victim and kinda showed that he relearned a little empathy through her. Super solid film in plenty of ways.

Solid review. I loved the point you made about how much this film grounds Batman. He doesn’t feel like a myth, when he escapes gcpd he hesitates to jump off the roof. His gadgets feel homemade. These make the film stand out
I really loved this Batman and seeing his growth since he is still new to the whole vigilante thing.
But can we talk about the Batmobile for a moment? It was the least impressive looking, yet most intimidating Batmobile I have seen!
The fact that it also looked homemade rather than just a repainted military vehicle made it even better. It's like he took one of his sports cars and turned it into a monster.
To me this film was one of the few that actually got the fear of the batman right. In most other Batman films, you see the criminals get scared of him but this is the one Batman film I've seen where it does a good job of actually making the audience scared of him. The whole intro to Gotham thing at the beginning really sold just how terrifying this character is. That and the fact that he never runs and, with every time they have a batman vs criminals thing, he always walks out of the shadows and the criminals are shitting themselves. I love that he doesn't need to run as the criminals all know that there is no escaping the batman once he's got you in his sights.
That Jaws theme he had every time he was on screen helped too.

This Penguin for the first time, made me interested in the Penguin. That's saying a lot because he's never really been my favorite of the Rogues Gallery, but this Penguin just... hits every nail on the head. Just like every other character in this film knocks it out of the park.
I thought the riddlers plan was incredibly well executed and timed, you state that it was “rushed” and penguin had too much time, whereas if you go back near the start you can figure out that the riddler is targeting Carmine Falcone the whole time. was not rushed at all
This movie was great, didn’t feel like a super-hero movie at all it’s was like a dark detective type film. You felt more pain in this than any bat-man movie. Riddler was amazing too

Matt Reeves has shown he can follow up a great film with a fantastic sequel that expands and builds on the previous film. He did this when he followed up Dawn of the Planet of the Apes with War for the Planet of the Apes. With the success that The Batman is having domestically and internationally I'm sure Warner Bros will let Matt has his way with the sequels, especially since they let him have full control of the first film. I have high hopes for the sequels and I'm sure they'll deliver.

Honestly, I'll have to respectfully disagree with your take on the Thomas Wayne subplot. Yes it's been done before, but in this movie I think it needed to be addressed as a means of showing Bruce that this scandal hits close to home - even his legendary father is fallible, and it serves to show him that the vengeance he sought after was ultimately not what he or Gotham needed. He was seeing the world in black and white (with mostly black) when in reality it's shades of grey and Thomas' secret is ultimately what opened that path for him.
But otherwise, I agree and love your response to the movie. This iteration of Batman is what we needed today: a gritty but ultimately hopeful version that deals with the raw consequences of violence.
It was an odd plot - it was like Thomas Wayne was the bad guy to protect himself THEN he was doing it to protect his wife because it was so odd and then Alfred walks it back. It reminded me of a Rashomon moment where everyone had a view point but the ONLY person who had the right answer, the one that mattered, well - he gets his ticket stamped. The one plot that seemed a bit hashed out is actually Catwoman out to save her friend Annika because, after the initial part and finding out who did it, it felt like her plotline was in auto pilot.
If Batman retellings have been done before (and to good effect judging by how many times it happens) I think the Thomas Wayne subplot is always a delicate balance. For this Gotham it will pay off because it will be an overarching story assuming this movie is part of a trilogy/short series. I guess that part could have been told better without taking up so much time in the last arc. Then pick it up again in the sequel with more impact when Bruce understands his legacy as a Wayne along with the more of his unfamiliar past coming back to him.

Over rated movie...Catwoman wasted,has no character, the Riddler is a patchwork of better movie killers with actual plans, Penguin's character is in the movie for literally no reason other than a carchace, Alfred is immune to explosions, Batman is immune to explosions, Gordon is only on screen to read things out loud for Batman or to play Captain Obvious, there's absolutely no real detective work going on since they just believe everything the last guy said yet half of the 3 hours is spent on detective thriller homage scenes, the third act (or fifth act, I dunno) makes no sense and has no place in the film at all bcoz it turned into another film and the villian's motivation changed just so we could have some big set piece for the final act.

One thing people don't seem to mention is how everytime the twins show up, their faces get progressively beat up and battered. It's such a cool detail for me cause it also shows familiarity within the world of the film and it adds to the dry, subtle humor the film has.

When I think about Batman, which happens a lot as an obsessive fan, this is the world that I imagine, albeit slightly more grounded. I know everyone has their own definitive Batman in their head, but this, BTAS and the Arkham games are all the definitive Batman to me.
Imagine if they do a a sequel with Mr. Freeze as the villain, maybe they can even introduce Harvey Dent and set up him becoming Two-Face

Thank you for the review. I actually really like that they focus less on the riddler at the end to be honest. It gives this movie a more humanity focus vs plot focus which isn’t very common for super hero movies. I love how grounded and more minimalistic this feels.
I love the thought that he takes off his cowl and cape, puts it in his big backpack, takes a big sweater or jacket and pants out of the backpack to put over his suit cuz the whole things probably won’t fit, then covers his face with a scarf and motorcycle helmet so he can get back home, and he still has the eyeliner on. It’s subtle, but makes him more grounded into your friendly neighborhood vigilante
I absolutely love how ambiguous the time setting is, it feels modern and classic at the same time. I think it really masters how timeless Batman is.
Indeed, you'll notice that the Raimi films do this as well, and honestly, that should be proof enough that "modern classical" should be the tone of the setting for just about every superhero movie.
I think I'm going to keep coming back to the opening monologue from Batman, and the entire stretch of his introduction. It was masterful, how every element came together to give us that. Also, Robert Pattinson's Batman is the definitive one for me. He's always been talented, but his work here seems so much more meaningful and noteworthy, maybe because the audience is bigger for this film and the collective experience adds weight to it.
Great video, after seeing it multiple times, my original thoughts about the film being bloated, were incorrect. A lot happens in the film, hence the length, but everything ties together perfectly and thematically. This film had to be long and the edit was perfect.
This was a film where every scene was curated with care, seeing it again made me appreciate it for what it did and the story it told

I think if you think the movie is about Batman v Riddler, you’ll think it’s too long. But if you understood that the movie is about Bruce Wayne’s character arc to realise complex truths about his world, and thus make choices about how to be Batman, and maybe also how to handle Bruce Wayne’s privilege, then the movie is the perfect length.
This movie was so grounded in reality that I actually thought Batman would lose or even die in the end. Not many superhero movies can make you feel that way because the heroes are so larger than life, but in this movie, Batman is so human and imperfect, that you actually worry about him
The Batman delivers the gritty noir style crime thriller I've always wanted to see in a Batman movie. It's a true detective story that explores the corruption of Gotham in much deeper way than we've ever seen on the big which extremely impressive following Nolan's trilogy. Of course all the performances are top notch and Robert Pattinson KILLED it as Batman! I think he succeeded in silencing many of the ignorant idiots and naysayers that were bringing up Twilight who clearly hadn't seen any of his work outside of that franchise.

Good and fair review! His arc of believing "fear" was the answer to bring justice but later realizing that "hope" is what he needs to become is a great transformation and it felt fresh and grounded. I have not read the comics but his new motivation can really shape who Batman becomes in the next few movies. Genuinely appreciated this new installment!
Also he realises he can't be dominated by the past; "the sins of the father" line is part of a saying that says "the sins of the father are to be visited on the son" which is like saying you have inherited the responsibility of your father's crimes only because you are related to them. The fact is Bruce can't beat the ***t out of the criminals to get back his father, neither can he undo his father's mistake, but he can make Gotham realise - like his family did in Nolan's trilogy - that he has to give a part of himself up to make Gotham better. I liked that message, it's very "change comes from within" as in you have to change yourself before you can change others.

This movie has beautiful cinematography, you can pause anywhere and still get a beautiful scene.
I also love the casts. And the story itself, for an almost 3 hours movie, I didn't feel there was any wasted scene at all.

What's really impressive was when he uses the batarang in the end. Instead of tossing it like any ninja batman with 100% accuracy. He uses practical approach to Jump, while dangling cut the wire himself knowing well it is the only outcome. I really Felt awe by that aspects. An aspects in batman which we haven't seen in comic, animated and movies. Patterson batman is my favourite.
I’ve seen it criticised but I think it fits with the realism of this version. He picked the high chance of success option with the high personal risk of actually cutting through, over the questionable success probability option of throwing it and yet somehow slice the insulated cables in one shot. I mean, it would fit a more fantastical version of Batman, but in this movie it would have taken me out of immersion.

The movie felt so gentle and delicate. There was a clear amount of love and empathy for each character and how they relate to Batman.
I loved the partnership developed between Batman and Gordon, how much Gordon believed in Batman and seemed to sympathize with him.
I loved the partnership, eventual friendship, and attraction with selina. I loved that their time on screen showed how Batman needed to grow as a person in regards to other people. I love how their friendship was developed, and how we can physically feel it ourselves. I like to think this is truly the first friend he ever made. I love that their potential romance is open ended.
I love the writing around the riddler and Batman. I love that the riddler genuinely thought they were partners. This reminded me why I get excited to read or watch anything Batman. The bonds he has with his villains is so intriguing and learning about the villains themselves and their motivations. Riddler was manipulating Batman but thought they were working together, Batman was aiding riddler (in more than just the current crimes) but thought he was solving a murder mystery. I love that the riddler challenged Batman and hopefully bruce to change his ways a bit. To define what separates them (him and riddler), but also do more as Bruce.
I love this gradual build up of the character, this true beginning. I love feeling and seeing his growth.
The Penguin was such a great part of this movie, he had me cracking up in the cinema and then afterwards finding out that he was played by Colin Farrell was just mind boggling
The eyeliner is them finally showing the black paint around every Batman’s eyes when his mask is on.
The Batman is one of the most dark, depressing and suspenseful films I've ever seen. And I freaking loved it.
Over rated movie...Catwoman wasted,has no character, the Riddler is a patchwork of better movie killers with actual plans, Penguin's character is in the movie for literally no reason other than a carchace, Alfred is immune to explosions, Batman is immune to explosions, Gordon is only on screen to read things out loud for Batman or to play Captain Obvious, there's absolutely no real detective work going on since they just believe everything the last guy said yet half of the 3 hours is spent on detective thriller homage scenes, the third act (or fifth act, I dunno) makes no sense and has no place in the film at all bcoz it turned into another film and the villian's motivation changed just so we could have some big set piece for the final act.

I absolutely loved the fallibility aspect as well. I like Bat God as much as the next guy, but I think the character’s far more interesting when he isn’t perfect. I loved that this Batman got knocked around. That last fight was fantastic.
It's not about him not being perfect, it's about the fact that he's not even remotely intelligent in this movie
One of my favourite details in the movie is the way all the hero music is rooted in horror tropes. In the batmobile chase the music takes on a jaws like sound. With trills sprinkled in to keep tension.
He fights crime by walking towards it very slowly.
I love the fact this Batman still takes damage. Even a random thug and The Riddle could still take him down easily. And he's even struggled to use parachute and falling. Also, we've never seen a Batman appearing at daylight.
I've thought about this movie everyday since last weekend. The more I think about it the better it seems. It definitely could have left some more on the cutting room floor bit overall I don't think there's ever been a more Batman movie. The people involved clearly get AND appreciate the character. Going back to the Nolan trilogy there are times it seems that Nolan actually hates Batman

I think Nolan seem very shy with the campy, outlandish elements of Batman. As he is one of the many filmmakers that idolized and felt inspired by Donner's philosophy of making the hero truly real, whether it honored the source material or not. This is the one Batman film I felt had the proper balance between the two styles and most importantly, felt very much helmed by a massive fan of the character and nearly century's worth of lore.
Bro same, I didn’t know what to think about the movie at first, but the more I thought about the movie the more I liked it better than the other Batman movies. I think that it’s the best Batman movie, and one of the best comic book movies.
I still think The Lego Batman Movie is the most Batman movie. Genuinely.

One subtle detail I liked was how whenever Bruce Wayne appears in daylight, his first instinct is to reach for / wear his sunglasses indicating how not used to daylight he is.
As per in his initial monologue he has become a "Nocturnal Animal".
Spending majority of his time in the night as Batman.
I could go on ab this movie for hours, but I really liked Batman's "you don't have to pay with him" line. It added a new layer to his no kill philosophy that made it feel less "holier than thou" than it had for me in the past, and showed how far he'd come in his understanding of Silena and her struggle
My favorite live action Batman movie. It was made by people who actually apparently read the comics, other than one or two Frank Miller stories.

The whole time I could see all kinds of influences from the comics which was really cool to me! It felt the most like the comics out of any Batman movie, and it helps that it was super pretty to look at

Saw it twice already…love I freaking love that part towards the end where he drops in on those riddler goons and starts annihilating them.
Awesome scene (awesome movie) That particular part reminded me of something out of the Arkham games. I especially love the part where he grabs the rifle from one of the goons and uses like a baseball bat, just awesome.

It's so fucking good, and made me realize that Robert Pattinson is a legit acting heavy.
Batman had that Netflix Daredevil feel to it and I love fight scene!
Several fights reminded me of several daredevil fights, even using the dark to incredible effect in some fight scenes. I felt like everything was coherent and I understood where everyone was, who was getting hit, and how hard they were getting hit.
The fight scenes felt exciting at least they didn't cut away fast like Nolan did with the Dark Knight trilogy.
5:55 love that take, it’s does very much feel like the best of both worlds. While at the very same time feeling so different then whatever we could have dreamed of seeing adapted to film.

I think my favourite moment from this riddler. Was when he started shouting about how Batman not joining him wasn’t part of the plan. He truest felt and sounded like the riddler I knew from stuff like the Arkham games but in his own unique way I loved it so much and it got to me.
I love how the film focuses on the Batman, and Bruce’s disinterest in being a symbol for Wayne Enterprises. That may well come later, but for this film he is “vengeance,” a blunt weapon dedicated to punishing the criminal element. It makes sense he hasn’t yet seen the utility of using his legacy to further his crime-fighting goals and provide cover for his Batman persona. Great film!
I have seen this movie 3 times now, and it gets better EVERY time! I have loved showing it to my friends and family.
