  • Every 4th of July our family enjoys the Grasslake 4th of July parade. It is our family tradition, and one we've been doing for 25 years! In the beginning of the parade marches the Color Guard, representing all branches of the military. Every year, we stand and place our right hand over our heart to show respect. This year as the Color Guard marched, my brothers (one is an Officer in the US Army, and the other is an Officer in the US Navy) were in formation and in uniform. My parents were oblivious they were even in town, thinking they were at their respective bases. I was able to capture their complete surprise and shock as John and Tom marched towards them and the crowd erupted in cheers! Ironically, my Mom happened to be filming the Color Guard with her phone to send it to John and Tom so they could feel like they were a part of our tradition for 4th of July! The video clip from her point of view is on this link: • Surprised Mom's view o...

That was very heartwarming. My son was a First Lieutenant in the Air Force and we will never again share the joy of such a homecoming. He was sent to his home in Heaven on December 8, 2002 at 24 years old and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Please, enjoy those you love and hold every moment with them dear. A retired Air Force officer's salute to my fellow veterans and your families.

MAMI DEL REAL -- At the beginning of World War 2, my paternal grandparents were very proud but naturally very worried when their four sons enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps (later U.S. Air Force) and U.S. Navy. The youngest son joined up at age 17 with my grandparents' written permission. Grandma especially prayed day and night for their safe return. The good Lord delivered -- after war's end, all four brothers returned home to Montana without a scratch.

A few years ago, my nephew came home for a visit shortly after being commissioned in the Navy, he was wearing his summer non dress white uniform as he had gone directly from work to the airport, on the way home he and his mother stopped at a local target store to pick up something my sister needed while there my nephew encountered two young women, who had made his grade school life miserable, bullying him, as he was the shortest boy of his age in the school, these two took one look at him in those whites, and lost it! They nearly knocked each other over, trying to give him their numbers! ( they didn't know that he was already engaged) When my sister ( who also didn't know about the engagement) asked if he was going to contact either of them, he just said those two? No way! Some stranger picked me up,after telling him my plans to surprise my parents for Christmas, He drove me all the way home to the drive way. My mom went crazy. Never will forget that day. Me and that stranger,Henry, are good friends till this day. Aloha and RIP Dad, Love you Mom. And thank you Henry

Michael, I personally want you to know that when I was in the 6th grade, my dad and I always watched the news together and every single time the planes would bring home the soldiers, him and I watched it together! Even if I was outside playing, he would call me in. My dad was a WWII Veteran and he taught me respect for my military.🇺🇸 I was in high school when I saw the last of the soldiers come home and I don’t think I ever missed any of the planes come home, including my brother! I salute you and want you to know that this young girl prayed for you every day! To this day, there isn’t a single Veteran that I meet, that I don’t thank! Thank you Michael for serving my country!🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Keep going. A friend of mine just got everything owed to him from the VA last week. He was a helicopter pilot going into LZs under heavy attack day after day in, oh, let's see now, Viet Nam. Yup, at age 71 he finally got what has been owed to him since the age of 23. All the back pay and everything else, and Uncle Sam finally wrote him a check for $120,000. He and I both think the gubment was hoping he'd die before they had no choice but to cough it up. Pisses me off so much - they're happy to take your service but don't want to give _what was promised when you signed up_ once back home. Keep going, and know that we civilians appreciate you.
