How to Survive When You See a Coyote
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 жов 2019
- Coyotes - they’re wild animals that roam the grasslands and foothills of North America. But they’re becoming more and more frequent guests to suburbs and even cities. They don’t enjoy or seek the company of humans and they wouldn’t move closer to us by choice. However, now these canines aren’t as afraid of humans as they used to be and feel safe roaming around backyards, even with the homeowners nearby!

SUMMARY:
- If you live in a high-risk area, always keep an eye on your pooch, even when it’s playing in your own backyard.
- Coyotes don’t like bright light, so walking on a well-lit street or path is a good idea. If that’s not an option, take a flashlight with you and create your own source of bright light.
- Baby coyotes are born in spring, so their parents get way more protective and, thus, dangerous from April to August.
- By nature, they like to get around during the day, but urban life has changed coyotes. They’ve adapted to sniff around when the sun’s not out in hopes of not getting spotted by humans.
- The main thing that brings coyotes to areas filled with humans is the search for food. So don’t be surprised by a visit if you leave something tasty out for them.
- A dirty grill that you forgot to clean after a delicious BBQ, fallen fruit you were too lazy to pick up, any kind of edible trash - all of those are natural attractants for coyotes.
- A fence that’s at least 8 feet tall made out of a material that’s hard to climb is a good precaution.
- These days, they make anti-coyote Kevlar jackets - yeah, the same material police vests are made from - for dogs.
- Avoid running by all means. It triggers their hunter instinct, so they’ll be more likely to chase after you.
- If you realize it’s too late to just walk away and the coyote is interested in either you or your dog, or both, you have to show it that you aren’t afraid of it at all.
- In case the coyote got into your backyard, use hoses, spray bottles with vinegar water (you can fill them in advance), or any other things that could scare away the predator.
- One important thing you should do after the predator’s gone is report the incident to your local authorities!
- You have to take your dog to the vet immediately for the wounds to be cleaned and treated. Even if it just looks like a minor scratch or bite, still take them in.

Have you ever seen a wild animal in your neighborhood? What was that? 🐵 🐼 🦁
Yes i saw A Dog😪
It was a wild hog
I have seen bear, deer, fox, wolf, moose, and coyote. My parents saw a cougar. There's animals all over where I live in Upper Michigaan.
I saw my lil sis lol

I live in the middle of the Mojave desert, I see coyotes ALL the time! In the park, crossing the road, digging through the trash behind the grocery store (people having been the ones to toss things out of the dumpster). It's ok when you see them at night but it can be a bad sign if one is out in the middle of the day. Just remember, if one arches it's back with it's head lowered, an attack is imminent.
Yhank you for the very educated comment ! That's very good to know !

Had a coyote walk out of the brush in California 50 yards away. It pranced its way towards me completely fearless but also non threatening. When it was right in front of me, it glanced at me. I can swear it said “hey, how’s it goin’’”?
I’ve had a few run towards me, when I cross the street they just keep going the same direction. It’s pretty weird and a bit scary, but they do look pretty goofy doing it
@@oboesoverbassoons5250 where my mom lives theyre very calm, she had found a coyote den on the edge of her property, where a family of coyote came about. Once they pups grew older and got bigger the family left that den. One coyote would eat the apples from her tree lower branches. Even getting up on hind legs. They have ability to get water on the property. On thanksgiving i threw out a piece of meat that a guest did not want due to being over cooked, guess who got the treat? But i guess that there are also bobcats around that area, and those look much more intimidating and strong etc from what i got out of it. There are even mountain lions in town i guess, but they are more camoflauge to the surrounding
coyote talkin lol
We have coyotes here all the time but I was walking 2 dogs the other morning and the coyote lunged and showed his teeth and when I yelled and threw the only thing I had, he didn't back down and continued trying to come nearer. I've never been afraid of coyotes but he was fearless and nothing I've read to scare them away was working. After at least 10 minutes of yelling at him, two ladies heard and came outside and we were able to get away. I don't even want to walk my dogs any more
Maybe carry a whistle or something, in the video he mentioned bells. Or maybe an air horn... even pepper spray.
Otherwise get bigger dogs

I've seen coyotes many times when trail riding on my horse. I'm actually a blessed owner of a coydog (or dogote depending on which one was the sire) that I met as a pup on one of those rides and another rider found a sibling later that day. She's almost 15 now and the experience of having her is awe inspiring. What an amazing creature she is. I know our time will be drawing to a close so I enjoy every minute we have left together.

Yes, my wife and I + dog were surrounded by a pack of wild coyotes in the Burbank Hills where we lived. I stood up and yelled at them to scare them away and threw sticks at them once they retreated just as suggested in this video. Burbank has a real problem with coyotes and wild dogs, we saw them in our neighborhood on a regular basis and missing pets was the norm
My brother was stalked one night by a group of either wolves or coyotes. He was going on a late night bike ride and he noticed red eyes parallel to him as he was on the trail and they on the forest. He went to a nearby neighborhood and had my mom and I pick him up.
And yes, the eyes were red and big.
coyotes have golden/yellow eyes wolves have red.
Me and my mom were driving when we saw a coyote in the road. We stopped. The coyote started walking towards us when i made my self seem confident and started yelling at it. It went away

Yeah, saw one at 11:40 PM. There's a lot of rabbits where I am, so coyotes would be there too. I came around a corner going to my car after work and we startled each other. It scampered away about 30 to 40 feet really fast, turned around and started to drift to my left side toward a small man made hill as it approached. Eventually we were next to one another with the coyote on the hill about 20 feet away. It walked past me as I walked past it to get to my car.
There used to be coyotes in my neighbourhood, but they've since been relocated due to the high amount of urbanization here. We once were riding our bikes and we road past a person's back yard that had a literal pack of coyotes in it, I was around 8 at the time.
Relocated or not, they'll be back and in bigger numbers. They are one of the most adaptable animals around and this video is dated in telling everyone that they have no choice because we move in on their territory when scientists have found that they move in to urban areas on purpose due to numerous opportunities to find an easy meal. So, you'll be seeing them again.🐺

There are numerous coyote packs near my small town, but they've been chill and just do their own thing. Mostly out of sight. It's a good thing the majority of our population consist of animal lovers here. The risk of a coyote making off with a pet/etc. is a small chance. Anyone who is too careless about the security of their pets shouldn't have any to begin with, tho. Love the video for these awesome additional tips!

Thank you for telling me all that info about coyotes because I have a York and it doesn’t grow that much. Thank you again.
Have observed coyotes in the Dallas-Fort Worth area; they have no problem living in built up locales. Have been told that they den in the storm drains and creeks in our suburb. I watched one jump a six foot fence without breaking stride in his lope, so I'm not certain that an eight foot fence would be sufficient for a truly motivated coyote.
8-foot fence, but he also said that 2 feet of that should be underground. So the fence would only be 6 feet anyway. And I've seen them jump 6 feet like nothing in videos. You would have to install coyote rollers on top of the fence to keep them out. I've also seen a video where one got a Chihuahua in his mouth and was going to run off with it, but the owner came out and scared it with an air horn. They work! He dropped the pup immediately and ran away. But that owner should've never left their dogs unattended.
@@mgarcia2445, thanks for the hint about the air horn.

Another time at night when I was sitting on the edge of the wall that holds the grass and dirt on the other side I saw a coyote walk across the sidewalk beyond the street. How did I survive you ask? I didn’t get up or walk and just watched the coyote pass.
Spot a Roadrunner and ride with it!🤣😂

I've bumped into coyotes several times in the woods in the middle of the night. If you don't mess with them they won't mess with you.
I live in Northwestern Louisiana in a semi rural area. I heard some coyotes at night behind my house a ways back. I had lost two pet outdoor kitties to coyotes. I foolishly went outside and walking away towards the sound yelling at them. Thinking I scared them off, I turned back towards my house. Then I heard then again, this time closer behind me. The hair went up on the back of my neck. Thank goodness I wasn't far from my back door.
My mom spotted a coyote once. She told me the story. | My mom was on her way home from the store, and she saw what she thought to be a stray dog in the road and rolled her window down. It turned to look at her since she was trying to call it over or something (She was pulled over). She saw it's face and was like "Noooope. That is NOT a dog", and rolled up her window and drove away. | Oof I don't know how to end this comment. Bye?

My mom and I were hanging out in the middle of the city in a park when one ran right past us and went straight down to the river in the middle of the day. I thought it was a stray dog at first but it clearly looked more like a coyote then a pet.
I actually did come across a coyote at a state park in california near Laguna Beach, CA. It was pretty late and we had to get to our campsite which is a 3.2 mile hike uphill to get there (from the parking lot) so midway through the hike we hear the coyotes howling and a few hundred feet up another hill adjacent to us. Me and my group then start shining our big ol 200 lumen lights around and making lots of noise, and we made it back to the car rather than finish the rest of the uphill hike to our tent.

How to survive a coyote
“Call coyote Peterson”
Was about to comment that lol
Yup call Brave Wilderness and run so they could do their stuff
A heavy metal flashlight is an excellent deadly weapon in addition to being a light source. I have seen numerous coyotes in southeastern Michigan, usually while night time bicycling during the warmer seasons. They typically run away when they see me coming with a bike light. If you drive to Waterloo State Recreation Area at night you can hear them howl and bark. They typically make a sound that is part bark and part howl. Would definitely be more afraid of a group of coyotes than a lone one. They are definitely more of a threat to pets than people. Your cat or dog might disappear one day if you let them run around unsupervised by themselves.

I was out on a run with my buddy on a sidewalk when he said that he saw a coyote across the street. Which made me look but I couldn’t see anything since it was night and pitch black, so I thought he was joking but while I was looking across the street a coyote sprinted about 5 feet in front of me and crossed to the other sidewalk, I was so scared and in panic that I had completely forgot about the no running away rule so I jolted the opposite direction, and my friend had no choice but to run too.
