  • I own a Pit Boss pellet grill. I own a Monument pellet grill. Both of these are broken. Today, we take apart our pellet grill(s) and figure out what is wrong with them. Then we fix them, and by them I mean two are now one.

I’m trying so hard to pay attention to the content but I’m drawn to the work of art on your tool wall.

For a smoker controller you can always do a PiFire (Raspberry Pi based smoker grill controller). The last time i looked at the project it was better than what you would normally get with a smoker and it has more features.

That is awesome, thanks for the tip. I’ve wanted to build some sort of pellet-fire-box for my big stick smoker for a long time but never knew what to do for the controller.

Worked in a BBQ restaurant for several years as a cook. Smoked on a large pit. Today, I do the simple and super cheap weber kettle. I bought a new one in 2015 ish. My previous one was from the 90s and a hand me down. Currently I found a old performer in the trash with a great bowl and busted side table. I made on out of wood for it and use the one I bought for the lid and a few other things. Works well. I need to redo the table, but so far I'm 100 bucks deep and I actually to have 2 functional grills. Made our Thanksgiving meal since 2016 on it. The pellet thing interests me. I like for simple dump the pellets and set it.... easy. Easy on the Weber, but a little more time consuming. I'd buy a different brand for sure. Have looked at the green Mountain ones to see. I way to cheap to buy the weber one of the 5K trager one though even though I'd use them. I don't think I give up the Weber or blackstone though even if I had it.

The pellet grill is super handy to smoke things I normally wouldn’t want to fire up the BGE or stick smoker for. We have played around with dips and cheese and things which I wouldn’t want to spend a hour getting my big smoker going. So it is definitely convenient, just wondering how much longer until it breaks again and if it is worth it to fix or replace, might just stick with charcoal.
Really want to get into the black stone/griddle next….

@@ZeroToAwesome The blackstone is great. I have the one with the air fryer and warmer drawer (gifted to me). Great for smash burgers, stir fry and of course rocking out a nice a breakfast is a matter of minutes. I've not tried a steak on it. The weber is the king of that in my backyard. Nice and smokey flavor. The family actually prefers my steaks over going out unless its something like Kennys, Silver Fox or Eddie V's. Really want to try some backyard pizza next. Done it on a gas grill once and it was just OK.

Hey there’s a good reason you kept that grill sitting in your driveway for almost two years! Next thing you know you’ll be using that Maroon countertop!

That rendering of high school Alan really pops on your video. Is Stephen considering garage art for hire?

On the auger fan motor, there is a wedge that is supposed to be under it. I believe it had some adhesive. Mine fell apart I drilled holes on each side of the motor and ran long bolts up with a metal strap running across the top of the motor. Of course with some small wood wedges underneath. Worked fine, now I think my igniter is bad. 🤦🏽‍♂️

Thanks for the heads up on the motor. Guess the little wedge is gone and I’ll need to find some long bolts.
The igniter was easy to swap out, just messy!

So in the end you’re going to have a “Monumental Pit!”

If the motor goes, replace it with a drill motor and relay. Controller goes? Replace it with a pi or arduino. Keep replacing the cheap thing that breaks and you'll make a better product for the price.

I got rid of my Traeger simply because it never got used. Cool novelty, not really practical.
