- This DVD looks at 60 years of history on the Illinois Central Railroad, from the steam era in 1938 and the mid-fifties, to diesels on freight and passenger trains in the late sixties, to the late Illinois Central Gulf era of the late eighties, to the "new" Illinois Central from 1988 to 1998. Trains are seen in all four seasons, with plenty of snow scenes in the 1990s.
This program is one of the most complete looks at the history of the Illinois Central Railroad available.

The Illinois Central was in my hometown of Belleville, Illinois! Good times!
Had my first cab ride on the IC at Clinton IL in the late 1970's. Retired from METROLINK in LA over 40 years later......
Anybody who was around during the golden age of railroads can’t help feeding sad watching this.
I was around until it shut down in 1989 but I wasn't around for Penn central
the IC passing through my home town in Iowa was a daily occurrence. I've always liked the orange and white IC paint scheme.
Great historical video. Very enjoyable. Thanks for sharing. Dave
It's great to see this. A lot of history and memories of The Main Line of Mid America. Excellent work by the crew at Diverging Clear Video.
I lived in tolono and Champaign when I was a kid. I remember these orange engines
Thanks for sharing this video. I hired out in the ICG RR Oct. 1976. Worked most operator jobs in Central Illinois. Clinton, Mt. Pulaski, Starnes Tower, Avenue Tower, Decatur yard, CSA Agent/Yardmaster Clinton, Slater, Missouri. Me & 7 others moved the call boards to Chicago where I worked DESK 7 calling yard & train crews between Gwin, Mississippi & New Orleans Louisiana . Was a great job.
thank you
I worked in the St Louis district, Pinckneyville local, Sparta Local, were my favorite jobs -
I used to rule the rails
Lines would clear when I gave the word
Now in the morning, I roll alone
Ride the rails I used to own....
Nice video! I like learning about the history of the Illinois Central Railroad, how it has changed over 60 years, and how it came to be the Illinois Central Railroad that was known from the late 1980s to the late 1990s when Canadian National took over the railroad! Really nice!
Always liked the orange and white but didn't care for the orange and grey/black. Great footage.
