Women are natural consumers. They love things that are in high demand or expensive, anything that is exclusive and few can own it. Shiny rocks is valuable because few can own it but doesn't have much use, while some shiny rocks or glass is also glitters but it's so common and cheap it and thus women are not interested. If some strange fashion trend is popular for a summer, women will attribute it as high value and thus their own value will increase if they wear it. Likewise with men, if a sub5 friend zone guy started to get attention from other women or gets a gf, suddenly he looks more attractive. If 6 ft became the average height, suddenly women will need 6.5. Or whatever height is 15% of tallest men. They don't know their own standards because it's whatever is in demand, not internal preference.
So Stacys have their chads that increase their value as women. While ugly women rather be lonely because a sub5 incel will prove their low status to themselves and to their peers. Being alone and single is preferable than finding a man that they can get because at least being single doesn't decrease their self worth and they have opportunity to wait for Chad.
Adults in the US are increasingly becoming like teens. I worked in middle school, the years boys and girls understand the concept of attraction. And kids will sell themselves to fake a persona as a performance to others. For example, smart kids will start acting up or goof off if they are afraid people will see them as nerds. Adults now seem to be concerned with being cool too. Flexing on people, acting foolish, trying to get a big following on social media, dating highly attractive people even if it's toxic and self destructive. Seriously, so many adults can't handle grown up responsibilities (1 in 4 women in America are on anti depressants) (30 percent of men 20 to 30 are virgins). They are too concerned with looking cool, they think that's what will make them happy, but aren't concerned with building their future, focusing on themselves.

How do you explain all the looks matched couples out there we see?
My observation is that for men age 18-24, average man with average woman couples are somewhat common, but already not the norm anymore. Very few average looking men are great in other areas and do well, some of them are like you said, looks matched couples, and most of them are incels.
