In the full hour long interview here the Paul Simon part starts at 38 minutes and 30 seconds.
I'm really surprised that there are only four comments after this has been posted for over 4 years.
As I was hired to teach astronomy, at age 50 in 2004, as I was pushed into early retirement when they eliminated our jobs of 20 years in a large computer center operation in 2000. So as an Adjunct professor in a local University in 2004, they put us through a class about the human brain for the new faculty, just prior to the start of the term.
This is where I learned a little deeper about my left-handedness.
So I've studied all of the great famous people in world history that are left-handed, of which of course one is, Paul Simon. He's more than just a musical genius as I saw him interviewed probably 30 years ago, and I wish I could find this interview again today.
He brought with him in the interview a board game that is somewhat physically controlled, it's called Labyrinth by Brio of Sweden.
Now as I'm writing this isn't this rather apropos or serendipitous?
He's being interviewed by a Swedish interviewer. But of course he did not bring this board game with him to show in this interview.
Many of you have probably seen this game, it's a little wood box about 1 foot in diameter and stands about 6 or 8 inches in height, with a hovering board inside the top that you control with two knobs on two sides of the box, that are connected by an X-Y axis metal turning rods inside, and tight strings inside that precisely pull an angle the top board in slight increments of motion through the dexterity of your fingers controlling the knobs carefully on either side. It tilts the boards to allow a rolling steel ball to follow a path through a walled maze with holes punched through the board in the numbers of 1~ 60.
I asked for this game as a Christmas gift when I was about in the 6th grade.
My parents bought it for me and I think a friend of mine also named Marc, was given this game at the same time. We were both the class artists through grade school and high school.
so I was pleasantly amazed when Paul Simon was shown playing this in an interview which I believe was in the late 1980s.
He could get the ball to advance from 0 to 60 in 11 seconds flat, cuz I believe they showed up stopwatch at the corner of the screen while he was performing this.
I was never able to accomplish it that fast on mine I still have it today I had it in my home I designed and built 33 years ago on the coffee table as guests came over I would ask them to attempt it.
So I've written a rather lengthy comment here that I wanted people to know that I decided at that time without really understanding it in the late 1980s when our daughter was only maybe eight or nine years of age, that Paul Simon apparently has genius level manual dexterity aside from being a left-handed genius musician. I've known that I've had these same abilities and qualities in life but I've never pursued them all. [I'm self-taught a little bit on guitar and piano and I could pursue it in a much more professional way, and even though I've been asked to by others,] I'm just an awarded and published astronomy artist whose had his astronomy work published in NASA websites for over a decade and a half, and I've provided tens of thousands of hours of Public Service sidewalk astronomy in my local city of Portland Oregon and across the nation and overseas at times, as I've been asked to lecture for schools about this over the years. I've spoken on National Public Radio about this several times, for the last seven years that their Talk of the Nation program was broadcast from Washington DC. All these discussions are archived to review at the NPR site.
