  • No sponsor, times are hard. But With Russia losing several aircraft in Ukraine lately, it's made me wonder why they don't use their Su-57 stealth aircraft? After all, that's what stealth is for, to avoid radar and being shot down! So we explore why they're not around, how many Russia even has, what they'd even be able to achieve, and all with the latest satellite imagery

More hollow bragging. It is easily disproven by the fact that they are not dominating the sky over Ukraine. Russia is always saying the BS that you're repeating. And if the Armata was the wonder tank you claim, again why are they not using them? Because if they did the world would see this is all more false boasts. The proof is in the pudding and they are afraid to serve it up.😆

Also, being able to detect a stealth aircraft does not mean you can target said aircraft. Stealth aircraft can be detected with low frequency(longer slower wavelength) radars but that return isn't good enough for targeting. The high frequency (shorter faster wavelengths) radar used for targeting can't "see" stealth aircraft.
That's why countries like China and Russia say "they can detect the f-35" or f-22. They can but they can not target them. But they like to play on people ignorance about how stealth aircraft and radars work. They play the same game for hypersonic missiles too.

"That's why countries like China and Russia say "they can detect the f-35" or f-22. They can but they can not target them."
Russia can do both. China can do both, but at shorter range.
Some other nations are also capable of this, but Russia is current leader in antistealth tech. By a big margin. China is probably 2nd in line.
And because USA specifically disallowed such research up until 10-15 years ago, USA and most of Nato are FAAAR behind.
"The high frequency (shorter faster wavelengths) radar used for targeting can't "see" stealth aircraft. "
That's a misconception and wrong. The RANGE they can be seen is REDUCED, not made impossible.
And there's a number of tricks for improving both range and chance to detect.
"They play the same game for hypersonic missiles too."
And yesterday, a Ukraine commander Ignati admitted that Ukraine's airdefence have NEVER even hit a Russian supersonic missile.
Supersonic includes hypersonic in case you don't understand this.

It's pretty obvious why the Russians aren't using them. The final engines, which produce more power and are more stealthy, haven't even reached production yet. Currently only low numbers of aircraft are being produced and they will almost exclusively be used for training and testing. It's still quite possible that they don't even go ahead with mass production. That's actually what happened to the Armata tank. They did some field tests, looked at what they had learned in Ukraine, sent it back to the drawing board for a redesign and in the meantime the Armata production line has been shifted to other vehicles.
Trustworthy information regarding how stealthy the Su-57 really is doesn't exist in public. The only thing we can 100% safely assume is that the materials are not as good as the western ones, but that doesn't actually affect low frequency radar all that much so it's more an issue regarding targeting radars and active seekers. So we can't really say how far away we will be able to spot it, only that it's somewhere between a gen 4-4.5 aircraft and a western gen 5 and that once we do it will be easier to lock on to. Ukraine has one of the most densely defended airspaces on the planet and when it comes to SEAD, if that is their main goal, then it would probably be a lot more resource efficient for Russia to just produce more long range anti-radiation missiles.
It's important to remember that Russian doctrine and western doctrine are different. If we evaluate their equipment based on our own usage methodology we are bound to misjudge them.

Russian doctrine in Syria is to have air supremacy within it's area or denial, so there is an overlap with western doctrine, yet they don't have air supremacy over Ukraine territory. Not using a so-called stealth aircraft to achieve this alludes to the Russians either not having faith in their aircraft' abilities or they don't have many/any to spare....their pilot numbers may also be a factor.

    • @TheRealBillBob
      @TheRealBillBob 9 місяців тому +8

Exactly and first of all they don't need Su-57's to deal with Ukraine. Secondly, Russia has only just now managed to get the right engines for them so they can fly at supercruise. As you know, you can't be a stealth jet without supercruise.

    • @CloneDAnon
      @CloneDAnon 9 місяців тому +7

Nobody has published ther RCS "numbers": First of all RCS is not a number, but a spectrum that changes with the attitude of the plane. Secondly RCS is top secret for all planes, even non-stealth oenes. Let alone most modern stealth planes. So ALL the talk about RCS this and that is pure speculation. The ONLY thing that can be said for certain is that USAF uses much more expensive RAM coating in the F35 (and to extent in F22), but that RAM coating has also drawbacks like being very averse to rain and does not work as well against large waveband radars.

Su-57 may have a frontal radar cross-section against airborne radars similar to a B-2 stealth bomber or 4th gen Gripen C jet fighter in a clean configuration (0,1m2) but Su-57 will have a much lower side profile than Gripen and its detectability would be further lowered one way or another due to a rather comprehensive jamming suite utilizing multiple radar arrays. In fact, as far as I know, no Western fighter is comparable in this regard, not even dedicated US "jamming" planes like Growler, not to mention that just flying low will make you invisible to the ground radars of most nations unless you got some early warning radar in high altitude, and even airborne radar has reduced detection range against low flying jets due to ground clutter.
So, all this trashing troll talk about the incompetence of the Russian aerospace industry is rather pointless. In all seriousness, the Su-57 can have the potential to be superior to the F-35 or even F/A-22 in direct AA combat due to its kinematic performance with new engines, multispectral sensors, and active radar/IR missile jamming because producing 5th gen air superiority jet fighter not capable doing so 20 years after the introduction of 5th gen jets of opposition would make little sense, especially when Mig 1.42/1.44 5th gen project was canceled as likely not good enough but due to lack of new missiles, questionable training, and overall lack of resources to get the most from their Russian tech, you can see how Su-57 can end when you look how Mig-29 performed with the underfunded armies of Middle East using export models with short-range missiles, and how Mig-29 performed in Ukraine, where it's flying to this day despite Russians operate arguably superior jets. These are among the reasons why Russia will not be in a hurry to send their newest tech into harm's way, not like there is a need for that against what Ukraine has...

And where did you get that delusion from?
Oh, i know, you can't read! You're incapable of understanding that minimal RCS is different from AVERAGE RCS.
Average RCS is used by Russia, it includes RCS from ALL ANGLES. It gives a REALISTIC estimate of RCS.
USA throws around MINIMAL RCS numbers, which is only real when keeping perfect nose on towards ALL sensors, which NEVER happens.
"In fact, countries who were interested in the SU57 backed off and canceled orders for them, must be a reason."
      Countries? There was India.
And India did not primarily want the Su-57. They wanted the engine.
But the engine ended up taking twice as long to develop as the rest of the aircraft. So Russia put another engine in the Su-57.
And last year, the first Su-57M, with the originally intended engine, first flew.
India also realised how expensive even Russianmade stealth was, and concluded that they could not realistically afford more than a token number.

MINIMAL RCS is what USA talks about.

It includes from the absolute worst rear and side angles.
Unlike the BS numbers USA throws around.
"India was very interested in the SU57, but then they backed out, just gotta be a reason."

The major mistake made in talking about radars detecting the fighters was combining two actions: "detection + shooting at the aircraft". From my numerous experience of watching videos about "stealthy aircraft" I've learned that most of them can be detected at one point or another, but locking on them and shooting them down is waaaaaay much harder if possible at all. This requires a combination of radars of different wavelength and even then it does not guarantee that the anti-radar missile won't be the first one to get to the target 🙌

But: Sarmat is real and proved it's characteristics (US still uses ancient Minutemen that constantly fail to even launch), so does Kinzhal missile (US hypersonic air launched missile program has been closed recently), Poseidon is just as real as everything before, A-135/235 anti-satellite missile was successfully tested as well (US only has some old missile that requires a plane to get it up to speed and altitude). And all of that for a fraction of US insane military budget.

Except that they've been part of operations against Ukraine since summer 2022. Already over a year ago, the Russian MoD stated officially that they had performed above expectations.
Or do you want to explain how the 8 first Su-57 pilots, 7 have made ace, and 1 have made double ace, from shooting down Ukraine aircrafts...
"But With Russia losing several aircraft in Ukraine lately"
You mean the ones Ukraine claimed and which was then debunked?
Russia lost 1 aircraft and initial information says it was a weatherkill, ie unexpectedly severe icing.

They have 12-20 operational, another 7 prototypes and up to another 8 conducting acceptance trials.

They are also set to gain western f16s in the coming days with people speculating they may already be flying due to the loss of 4 russian su34s in the past week or so. However what effect they will have and wether it was f16s or more likely a patriot system that downed the russian aircraft is yet to be seen

The answer is very simple. It's not economically viable to use one small fighter to launch missile, when you can use strategic bomber with 6 times of armaments that Su-57 is capable to fit will less fuel consumption and less expenditure for logistics. You don't really need to waste 10 minutes of your life to understand that. War is defined by economy and logistics. It would be stupid to use Su-57 when it's not needed to be used at all. They only used it early war as Ukraine is a very nice testing ground. Russians are extremely pragmatic people. They won't use Su-57 when there is virtually no need to use it. They don't do these sort of things for PR stunts. They win wars decisively at any cost. Ask Germans about it whenever they see T-34 tank in Berlin watching at them from memorial. Quite sobering experience they say.

Stealth aircraft can be detected and tracked by other types of radar, which allow defenses to selectively activate their radars. It's doctrine not to leave the S300 radar on all the time, so using other systems to direct the air defense systems allow much better SAM cover without being as susceptible to anti-radiation missiles. The shear number of radars in Ukraine right now is why you don't see SU-57's trying their luck.
