    This will be my first drum set of any kind and I’m excited to learn new instrument. I come from guitars, uke, keys background.
    It’ll definitely be a while before I mess around with adjusting sounds. Think I’ll stick with preselects and try to learn basics for a good bit.
    Seem kinda complicated.

    • @longandmcquade
      @longandmcquade  4 роки тому +4

      It might seem complicated once you get into the more advanced features of this module, but we assure you that it doesn't have to be! You could just sit down at the kit, choose patch #1 and never move it from there and enjoy playing on this kit. The good thing is that this kit can grow with you as you learn more. For the first little while if it seems complicated, you can just play the preset kits which are easily accessible with the big knob and you wouldn't have to dive into menus or any other settings. But as you progress in your drumming skills, you'll also develop a taste for what sounds good to you and you'll also become more familiar with the module. So as you learn more, you'll probably be more particular about the sounds and settings of the kit. At which point, this video will still be here for your reference, so please come back if you want to learn more about the more advanced, "complicated" settings!

  • @dadduorp
    @dadduorp Рік тому

    I’ve had this kit for several years and hands down, this is the most in-depth and comprehensive overview I’ve found on UA-cam.
    I’m a keyboardist who bought this kit primarily for recording, and I wanted to know how to adjust the stereo pan of both the toms and cymbals. After watching several other videos to find the answer (unsuccessfully), you hit on @7:40.
    Another question I have is how to eliminate a weird leakage or false triggering of one of the toms coming out of the two right ride cymbals every time I inadvertently hit the bell/wingnut tip? I tried disconnecting the sounding tom but you still hear it.
    If I could offer one gripe, it would be that you should’ve had a straight-on closeup view of the interface/panel rather than an angled set-back one.
    Good job!

    • @longandmcquade
      @longandmcquade  Рік тому

      Thanks very much for the feedback! In response to your gripe, we actually did have a straight-on view of the module (3:10) but the clarity of the footage was less than desirable, so in editing we thought that the buttons, screen and menu options were more legible in the isometric angle. This video is also going on 5 years old, and our camera quality/production value has increased since then.
      Crosstalk can be a natural occurrence with electronic drums. For example, if you hit one of the tom pads and it triggers the sound from a cymbal pad that's mounted nearby, the vibration from hitting the tom pad may travel through the rack/stand and trigger the cymbal pad. This is referred to as "Crosstalk." In the TD-17, there is a feature called "X-Talk Cancel" (Crosstalk Cancel) that can help prevent Crosstalk from occurring. When adjusting X-Talk Cancel, you increase the value for the pad that's being triggered by another.
      Here's how to access and adjust the X-Talk Cancel parameter in the TD-17.
      1) Press the SETUP button.
      2) Press the cursor down button to highlight "Pad Settings," and then press the function 3 [F3] button (ENTER).
      3) Press [F3] again (ADVNCD).
      4) Cursor down to select "Xtalk Cancel."
      5) Hit the pad that is being triggered by another. For example, if you hit the tom pad, and the cymbal pad is triggered, hit the cymbal pad to select it.
      6) Turn the main dial to increase the value (0-80) as necessary until the crosstalk subsides.
      7) Press the DRUM KIT button when you're finished. The new setting is saved automatically.
      If this doesn't help, we'd recommend factory resetting the module.

  • @e11world

    Great video. Thank you for showing the sounds layering. Very nice addon. Can you assign different sound to the rim of pads?
    This is now my top choice to buy after the Alesis Strike Kit pro because it's cheaper and most likely lasts longer & especially because it too allows the sound importing which was the reason why I waited so long and wanted to get the Alesis kit but that had enough issues even though the sounds are amazing and it looks awesome (a con for this Roland one).
    I was wondering what is the max sounds you can import (max per file and total either in MB or length)?

    • @milesgibbons9287
      @milesgibbons9287 6 років тому +1

      Yes! You can apply different sounds to the head and rim; you can also layer a third sound on the head and fourth on the rim, so you can trigger up to four sounds from one dual zone pad.
      Imported WAV files can be up to 295 seconds (mono)\148 seconds (stereo).

    Great playing Miles. After a lot of research and model comparison within an intermediate budget i sourced a used td15. A main feature within that budget was that the td15 had separate earpiece and monitor option - ready to gig. Does the td17 have this feature?

    • @milesgibbons9287
      @milesgibbons9287 6 років тому +1

      Hi Mark (thank you!)... This kit is gig ready. You can patch your TD-17 into front of house through the stereo master outputs, or just the left for a mono feed. You can plug a set of headphones or in-ears directly in to the headphone output of the module - if you wanted, you could also use the headphone output to send audio to a personal mixer or powered monitor (you might need to use an adaptor or Y-cable, depending on what kind of input the mixer\monitor has). Level control of the individual pads is instantly accessible with a dedicated button on the module, so building a good mix of the kit will be quick and easy. Does this help?

    • @mark_blake
      @mark_blake 6 років тому

      Thanks Miles. I don't always use a personal mixer and often rely on the module for the split - house and earpiece. Can i set the output/volume levels separately on the td 17 for the house/PA and the earpiece?

      There’s no right way, it’s all about taste... the preloaded kits are all designed to be readily playable as is, but you can of course alter them to your liking. Copy a a kit you like to a few of the User Kit patches, and tune/EQ/etc them differently... this will help you establish what kind of adjustments you like.

    First time I've seen the kick tower placed to the side of the rack versus product pics/other videos having it in center between the two narrow bars.
    Personal preference or Roland recommendation to place kick on the side? 🤔

    • @longandmcquade
      @longandmcquade  3 роки тому +1

      Great catch! It's personal preference. In the middle between the two bars is more aesthetically pleasing for their promotional product photos and whatnot, but offset is really much better ergonomically.

    • @zvoidx
      @zvoidx 3 роки тому

      @@longandmcquade Great, thanks for the reply. I recall a UA-cam review of this kit, guy was saying you couldn't get a bigger kick pad because of the small space between this rack.
      So, it looks like that doesn't really matter. 👍

    • @longandmcquade
      @longandmcquade  3 роки тому +2

      @@zvoidx Doesn't matter one bit, as long as you're comfortable with the offset kick. But you should be, because when you sit down on a stool with your feet on the floor and no drum kit in front of you, take a look down at your feet and you'll notice that when you're looking straight ahead, your feet angle outwards. For maximum comfort and ergonomics while playing, you should position the parts of the kit where your body naturally goes, instead of adjusting your body to where the parts of the kit are. So if you sat on the stool, facing forward, feet on the floor, and placed the hi-hat pedal and the kick pedal under where your feet naturally land, your kick pedal and of course the pad too would be offset to the right just like Miles has here. And when doing so, you can use a larger kick pad like a KD-120 should you want to upgrade down the road.

    Hi! Great review! I would like to ask you something that happens to me and I do not see anybody speaking about it. I have the TD17 module on a VAD 306. When I import my own sounds, for example a ride cymbal, if I hit it twice then the second hit mutes the first, creating a really weird and unnatural sensation. Typical situation when hitting the ride alternating one hard and one soft hit in a groove. The soft hit does not overlap and mix with the first, but it kind of replaces it creating a drastic decay between the hard it and the soft one.
    I hope my explanation was clear enough so that you could give me an opinion of how to solve this. I was able to improve the performance by crating another sublayer but it’s not ideal.
    Obviously, this behavior does not occur with the preset the TD17 comes with.
    Thank you!

    • @longandmcquade
      @longandmcquade  3 роки тому +1

      Imported samples are designated as “Mono” samples by default. Press the [USER SAMPLE] button, and then enter the “Play Type” menu. Change your sample to the “Oneshot Poly.” Additional strokes will now overlap, and no longer cancel out previous strokes.

      Make sure the HH cable is plugged into the hi-hat cymbal pad, and the HH CTRL cable is plugged into the hi-hat foot pedal. It's pretty common to get those switched around. If everything is plugged in properly, our next recommendation would be to perform a factory reset on the module.

    The TD-17KVXS is $2199. More realistic hi hat setup! Awesome set. Worth every dollar!.. I own it. Tighten up the heads as they are to loose from factory, or risk damaging triggers.
    I don't like the amps from roland. No power.
    I use a workingmans 12" bass amp and some alesis monitor speakers hooked up to the external output. Just cooks with a full range of sound.

    • @longandmcquade
      @longandmcquade  5 років тому +1

      Our opinion is yes. The TD-9KX2 is a few years old, but the pad set it came with is still quite good and comparable to what you'd get on a new kit like the TD-17KVXS. However, the sounds on the TD-9 module are dated. Advancements in modules and built-in sounds in have outpaced the advancements in pad/trigger technology. The TD-9 module is still good, and the other features like playalong songs, recording, coach functions are all there on both modules, but the TD-17 does have more modern and authentic sounds, as well as the ability to layer sounds and import your own sounds.

    I am in between the 17 kv and 17 kvx, Is there a difference in sound? & does having a stand alone high hat stand makes a difference? and worth £500 Extra. I would really appreciate an advice

    • @longandmcquade
      @longandmcquade  4 роки тому

      There is no sound difference between the TD-17KV and the TD-17KVX. The only difference is in the pad set - they both use the same TD-17 module. We definitly think that the KVX upgrade is worth the extra cost - not only for the VH-10 hihat, but the extra crash and the upgraded CY-12C and CY-13R cymbal pads. A lot of people who purchase the TD-17KV come back to us a little while after buying it asking about adding cymbals or upgrading the pads, and it's always more cost effective to do it from the get-go than to but the KV and start upgrading/swapping components. Hope this helps!

      There is an FX send menu in which you can choose which pads have the FX applied to them, and how much of the effect is applied. You could (for example) have no echo on your cymbals, a little echo on your toms, more on your kick, and tons on your snare.

    • @longandmcquade
      @longandmcquade  5 років тому

      Yes you certainly could! If you're happy with the TD-1DMK pad set, then this would be a good option.
      However, the TD-1DMK kit is $899, and the TD-17 module alone is $849, for a total investment of $1748, and you still would have the smaller CY-5 cymbal pads, 6" mesh tom pads, and the 8" snare pad of the TD-1DMK pad set. The TD-17 KVS comes with the module you want, plus larger CY-8 cymbals, 3x PDX-8 8" tom pads (the same one you use as a snare now), and a 12" PDX-12 snare pad. The TD-17 KVS kit is $1599. You might want to consider trading in the TD-1DMK and trading up to the TD-17 KVS to get the better pad set as well.

      @longandmcquade  6 років тому +1

      MusicMan11, that's not entirely true. The TD-11KS has the same cymbal pads as the TD-17KLS and the TD-17KVS, which are the CY-8 pads. The TD-11KV has the upgraded CY12C and CY13R cymbal pads that you're thinking of, as will the TD-17KVXS. But the TD-17KVXS will have an additional CY-12C that the TD-11KV didn't come with, and will have the VH-10 hihat, whereas both TD-11 models had a CY-5 cymbal pad with the FD-8 hihat foot controller.
      The TD-17 will be available in THREE different pad sets in Canada. Starting with the TD-17K-LS, this is the "lite" model that includes a PDX-8 snare pad, PD-8A rubber tom pads, CY-5 hihat and CY-8 crash and ride cymbal pads. The module in the TD-17K-LS will not be Bluetooth capable. The TD-17KVS is the mid-level option, which Miles is playing here. It includes the new PDX-12 snare pad, PDX-8 tom pads, CY-5 hihat and CY-8 crash and ride cymbals. The module in the KVS outfit and above will be Bluetooth capable. Finally there's the TD-17KVXS package, which is the best pre-packaged pad set you can get with the TD-17. It has the PDX-12 snare pad, PDX-8 tom pads, two CY-12C crash cymbal pads, a CY-13R ride cymbal pad, and the VH-10 hihat pad that mounts onto a traditional hihat stand.

      Hi Kyle, unfortunately there aren't any officially-available add-on packs for the TD-17 module at this point in time. There are free "artist-tuned" kits for the TD-50, but a similar feature is not available for the TD-17. There are third-party options online that you could look into for download at an additional cost.

    • @longandmcquade

      There are many free and commercial websites where you can download new drum kit sounds and import them into the TD-17 using the User Sample function. The files must be in a Wave file format, 44.1 kHz, and must be 16 or 24 bit. If they are not the right file format, use an audio editor like Audacity (open source) to convert them.
      Just Google 'drum samples wav'.

      1) Roland will no longer warranty damage they deem due to the cause of a ‘aggressive playing style’.
      - my major problem with this is that this isn’t disclaimed prior to getting the kit. No where, in any of the UA-cam reviews etc do they say that metal/hard rock playing style will wear and tear the kit quickly.
      So my first issue was with my snare drum. The rubber lip for rim shots started to bulge and protrude out in a very small, specific area. I sent it in for repair august of last year. Roland notified your store in Nanaimo that they would not fix this if it happened again, deeming it due to heavy playing style, and basically said other potential warranties issues would come under this scrutiny. And on a side note, 3 weeks after
      I took the snare in to send off for repair, and before Roland got back to you guys deeming my damage due to ‘playing style’, I received an email from you guys saying my warranty was up in a month and That I could renew for $75 for the year, which at that point in time I thought this makes sense considering I’ve just used it.
      Anyways, December comes and still no snare. I don’t blame you guys for this, it’s Roland taking their sweet ass time saying they can’t get parts for literally a piece of rubber.
      One of your guys at Nanaimo ends up just giving me a new snare, partially because they still didn’t know when it would be ready and we were closing in on half a year, and also because I purchased a new warranty before finding out that any warranty work I wanted done in the future may not be covered again, because of my ‘playing style’.
      I’ve been playing the drums since I was 10, I’m 37 now…
      I by no means beat the hell out of my kit, but yes… I do play aggressively.
      Had I known or heard or read Anywhere that this drum kit does not suite all styles of play, even though there are ‘metal’ presets in the kit selector (oh the irony), I wouldn’t have purchased the kit.
      Now I have my cy-5 rubber is coming away from the adhesive and is muting my open hi hats randomly, and the kick drum sensitivity is fading because the pad is so heavily sunken in.
      Meh.

So we're glad to hear that a staff member at our Nanaimo store gave you a new snare pad - that's exactly how our Performance Warranty policy should work, should the manufacturer not come through for you. At first I thought she was being bitchy but I asked her to come upstairs, lock the door and kick it hard, so I could evaluate the noise downstairs. To my surprise, there was a very perceptible low frequency sound coming from the ceiling, just as if someone was hammering a nail up there.
      I know that Roland sells a "noise eater" small platform for an absurd 150 euros so I made one myself with 1/2" rubber mat and put it under the kick pedal and kick pad, which has reduced the noise a bit, but not completely.

    Great kit but two things are a little annoying. 1) The headphone jack on TOP. Previous modules like the TD-9 had it on the bottom left which makes all of the sense in the world. 2) The screen is very small. It could've been a little bigger for so it's easier to manage from a distance. Otherwise, you have to lean in and kill your back while making changes. Most drummers will make changes while sitting on a throne which is FAR AWAY from the tiny screen. Doing a demo with the camera focused right in on the screen is totally different than a drummer sitting up on a stool & making changes.

    • @longandmcquade
      @longandmcquade  Рік тому

      The audio in this video was recorded direct from the module into the camera, so you're hearing the actual sound produced by the TD-17 module, eliminating any outside factors. Similar to how it sounds in your headphones. It eliminates outside factors such as room acoustics and pad noise, and also represents a true stereo field, so it sounds more authentic in headphones.
      Once you play with an amplifier, you introduce outside factors such as how that amp/speaker interacts with room acoustics, you hear your acoustic pad impact noise mixed with the electronic drum sounds, and the sound is coming from a single source (probably on the ground) which does not give you a nice wide stereo image with individual instruments panned based on their physical location set up on the kit.
      Hearing the pad noise and hearing the drums coming from a mono speaker on the ground really reduces the "illusion" that you're playing acoustic drums and makes it sound "fake" as you put it.

      Really quick terminology correction: A rimshot is when the stick comes into contact with the head and the rim at the exact same time, making a loud cracking sound. This is on by default, if you hit the mesh head and rim at the same time. A cross stick is the softer clicking sound by laying the stick across the drum and playing just the rim. If it's the cross stick feature that you're looking for, check out 6:20 and you can see in the lower left of the screen is the X-Stick label. The leftmost button under the screen when you're on the Kit screen will turn on and off the cross stick sound.

      Miles Koester I use all kinds of different samples... sometimes I record and create my own sounds, sometimes I download things from the internet, sometimes I just use samples from the collection that came with my DAW. I’ve literally recorded owls in the forest with my phone and sampled that. Any WAV file will work!

      Miles Koester a DAW is a “digital audio workstation.” These are computer programs that you can use to record or edit audio, sequence MIDI, program electronic instruments etc. Protools, Ableton, Logic, Cakewalk are all popular DAWS. They often come preloaded with a bunch of samples you can use in your music.

      Yes, you can add another crash cymbal. Or just get the KVXS which comes with the better cymbal pads, the extra crash cymbal and the VH-10 hihat upgrade.

      Make sure all the wingnuts on the clamps and mounting arm for the snare pad are tightened. Don't overtighten because it could strip, but find out which direction the snare pad is falling and tighten the corresponding wingnut with your fingers or screws with your drum key.

    • @longandmcquade
      @longandmcquade  3 роки тому +1

      We always recommend getting the best base configuration that you can afford at the time, because it's always cheaper to get the upgraded/expanded pad set initially than to upgrade or swap out components over time. If you can afford the KVX now and prefer the better cymbal pads and extra cymbal on that configuration, that's the route we'd suggest going. Daveyboy is incorrect above - the KV and KVX have the exact same PDX-12 snare pad, and both are mounted on the rack. The biggest difference is the upgrade from the CY-5 hi-hat cymbal pad and the FD-9 hi-hat controller pedal on the KV, to the VH-10 hi-hat on the KVX which requires a real hi-hat stand. Plus, the 2 CY-8's on the KV are upgraded to 3 CY-12/13 cymbal pads on the KVX.

    • @longandmcquade
      @longandmcquade  3 роки тому

      The "kit" (ie pad set) is not available separately. The TD-17 module itself is priced at $949.99CAD currently, and the TD-17K-LS is priced at $1399.99CAD. So the K-LS pad set adds $450 to the price, but it's not as if you could purchase the whole pad set and stands for that amount. You will always save money buying whole kits/configurations together.
      Hope this helps!
