I loved watching this, seeing the editing, the visuals, and the beautiful slides; it's awesome to watch someone talk about their passion. Something they absolutely love. Well done Em
Aww I really appreciate this comment! I had help from the wonderful refs of Atlanta Roller Derby for this video. Grateful for all you officials out there!!
I've watched this 3 times already! I feel like I get it even better each time! I've only been to my first roller derby academy class and got plenty more to go. But I've already applied to what I've learned to watching games! Thank you!!!!
Excellent, I love to hear this!! Learning the rules is soooo helpful to upping your derby game!! Good luck on the rest of your journey and thank you for letting me be a part of it
This is such a fun and helpful video for memorizing both the penalties and ref hand signals! Thank you for such great slides, I always love to see RD content :]]]
Our first trip to ARD was back in February 2017- we had no idea what the rules were, but Human Missile Crisis helped explain what we were watching. Over the years, we've figured out what happening (Brawn F Kennedy helped too), but yours is the most comprehensive and easy to understand explanation of penalties and rules that I've ever seen. Thanks!! Good luck on your Roller Derby journey
*laughts in two whistle jam starts, minor penalties and poodling* But seriously, i just rewatched this and it’s so well explained and put together. Every few months, I share this on our juniors page for the parents and newer kids. Last night we had some newer skaters struggling with the rules and I pointed them to this.
Yesss I love it!! Thank you so much for sharing this with them (: I'm worried we'll have some big changes where this video will become outdated but we'll get there when we get there LOLL
Thank you so much for this video, I want to bring the sport to my country and I’m trying to learn as much as I can to make a proposal to my town hall to see if we are able to implement the sport for the first time here! Would it be okay for me to translate your slides in Spanish?
Great video and loved the gifs. Only add is that skating nonderby and destroying the pack is always a penalty but skating derby direction and destroying the pack, you need to skate faster than the established speed of the pack. So if the pack is going 5 mph and you skate 10 mph and destroy the pack, it's a penalty. If you're skating 5 mph and destroy the pack, no penalty
i’m in the “learning the ropes of the sport but haven’t applied to join a team yet” stage and i’m watching all the derby content i can absorb. i kind of wish for some IRL examples of the penalties from real bouts. i know it would end up being so so so SO much more work - having to watch 101 different uploads to try and find examples of each penalty. but the gifs are helpful though!! thank you for this video!!
Ugh that was my DREAM initially-to find IRL examples!! Like you said, it just takes forever to find them😂 I’ll try to make some shorter videos with examples so it’s less daunting!
I really didn't get much of that but from what I understand is you can only hit people in certain spots and can't do stuff outside of the zone and out of bounds
@@jampackedrollerderby7452 Impactful Players have impactful penalties. Grats on top blocker stats for the game (iirc) Your progression over the last year deserves credit.
Recently reffed a game where one of the players from my league got 6 penalties in the first half and during halftime all us refs were convinced that the player would get benched and if not, get fouled out in the second half. They made it to the end of that game with just those 6 to the amazement of basically everybody. Refs, players and audience. And it's not as if that player holds back!
Thank you! And good question, but the answer is no hehe this video was created just before WFTDA released the new 2023 ruleset so it's based on the 2018 ones but luckily there were only some minor changes + updates!! If more new changes come about, I will think about making an updated vid (:
Wait, what's the difference for ref hand signals for the penalties of Arms vs. use of forearms and hands? The ref has a fist for arms and an open hand for forearms & hands. Is one for blockers and one for jammers? Thanks
I'm 8 min in and am so happy I found ur vid! I subscribed and will absolutely be checking out ur other vids. This is such an adorable, funny, and helpful way to learn more about roller derby! I'm a new fan and want to learn all about it. Thank you! 🛼🛼💜💜
My hand hurts from taking notes, but THANK YOU SO SO SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS!!! It really helped!!
OF COURSE!!
If only textbooks in school taught this well…

Yes basically! You've got it down - I hope your derby journey has been going smoothly!
Lol, the background music: What you gonna do when you get out of jail?
I'm gonna have some fun
What do you consider fun?
Fun, natural fun…

ould I use parts of your video as fillers during live bouts?
Hi there! Absolutely (: If you could credit the channel or give a shout-out that would be awesome but I’m all for it☺️
Thank you this is an excellent video!
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! Happy skating to you (-:
Pro tip from AbNORMal: if you aren’t using your 7 penalties, you aren’t playing hard enough lol

There is no “arms” penalty.
Here is a fact. To even be able to roller skate in the first place, you have to have physical strength.
This is true!
