as an electrical engineer with a casual interest in cross-discipline subjects, this video was AWESOME - very well done and perfect mix of technical explanations with laymen's terms. Double thumbs up from me!
I'm a Machinist with a Film/TV background who is planning to build a house (I've done some construction before, but looking to take things to a new level), so I'm right there with you!
Don’t mean to be that “topper guy” but…. I’m 80% retired ( other 20% is family donated time with full warranty) and I found myself binge watching right now on Christmas Eve ? Really but I don’t want to miss out on something new ! Lol 😂
Great talk. For everyone that had chemistry in school and not "cement science": when C3A is mentioned it's not a chemical notation, it's a lazy way of writing: Ca3Al2O6. There's no chemical element called "A"
I like the way you explain the subjects . I am taking my PE Exam for Civil Engineering in Construction and I had some questions about my first attempt related to cement, fly ash, slag and silica fume and now with your videos is clearer to me. Good Job !
Even though I'm not working with this today my first job was at a cement factory. What you describe is however quite related to North America when it comes to the standards, but the chemistry and problems are the same anyway.
It’s interesting how in the oilfield so many commonly known things are added to cement to achieve desired properties. Salt is used in lower concentrations to accelerate the set of cement but table salt at high concentrations (on the order of 18% by weight of water) will be added to the cement to give the slurry desirable pumping properties as well as to control shrinkage and for cementing across salt formation zones. Regular household sugar is a strong retarder of cement so in the oilfield if you were washing cement equipment up to a tank you could add lots of sugar to prevent it from setting. This could apply to yard work. Maybe you have a wheel barrel of mixed concrete with some left over. You could just add sugar to it to prevent it from setting up inside your wheel barrel. These are just a couple of examples. Cement is a very cool material and there’s a lot more involved with it than most people realize.
Thanks Newfie! I agree! We do all these things in construction cements as well. I talk about some of this in my admixture videos. You can get them here: ua-cam.com/video/q_PwZE57Slc/v-deo.html
I was studying sedimentary rocks and was desperately searching for a video that explains the cement types of the sedimentary rocks. And i got this instead.
Could you speak to interfaces between types of concrete; specifically with respect too the use of 3d printing cement using blaine cement on outside of form and OPC on the inside to reduce crack propagation and using Type 5 cement as a liner in sulphide ore roaster flumes. (Just two examples)
Awesome video. I have been in the cement Industry for 30 years. I was an lab tester I know what to look for in bad cement. We use to make type type ll, type 1, type V &type Plastic .
Hi Dr. Ley..........enjoyed your cement types lecture. Do you have an opinion on what mortar i should use for a brick wood fired pizza oven? Can i add something to the portland cement/sand/lime in my mortar to make it more heat stable?
CAC can be modified by infusion with ultra low viscosity resins and soluble calcium after it cracks, which, while never really regain their original strength, it brings them back somewhat. ~( 'w')/ CSA [quick set cement] is hella hard to work with so you pretty much have to mix it as you apply it [like shotcrete style machinery] but the mixing equipment is subject to freezing up if its not fully moved and purged, especially once a pour is finished. If you use CAS and mix in a sealing epoxy, you can have a very impermeable sealant, which can be good for shoring up loose soil, shale, and mine shafts. I suggest one also add fine fibers such as aramid fibers [low deformation, high tensile strength, high fracture resistance, high corrosion resistance, no corrosion contribution, chemically nonreactive, nontoxic, and non-flammable] like Kevlar, but not necessarily Kevlar its self, since many others with potentially more desirable properties. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aramid
Oh thank god I found you I all my questions always referred me to well let's just say the channels were problematic in the English department 😂 so now I'm ready to be a sponge and learn all about cement so I can make better choices with my projects ty agian
Awesome and simple explanation. Do you feel the Florida Champlain Towers collapse may be caused by improper mixing of the concrete, as evidenced by widespread clean separation of the concrete from the rebar used?
Tyler - great video and excellent knowledge to keep up on..... Planning to have a pool deck replaced here in Southern AZ. The pool is about 23 years old - has cooldeck on it, which has come up in many places and the concrete is spalling. What is the best type of cement is best for a pool deck - it will be filled with chlorinated water. Thanks.
Limestone is softer to Grind, the Bond Index value (Grindabilitiy) of Clinker is much lower than Limestone, so adding more LS will give you more fines.. @10:12
7-VII-2021. You forgot refractoriey cements ,Naturel cements and low cromemen cements. The 6 street bridge in L,A, are using Co2 to cool the cure time too and much more.
I was on a Job site that they were pouring electrical Duct bank. The foreman said they use thermal cement what is that? Is it thermal conductive cement? Is strength loss why they take 3 or 6 samples to be tested every 30 days? sometimes tested up to 180 days.
I have a question. On the collapsed bldg in FL when people would pick up chunks of concrete to move it the chunk would turn to powder. Is that normal or does that mean there was an issue with the concrete? I have never picked up a piece of concrete and had it turn to powder in my hands.
Hi , DIYer here . I have some old solid 4"x8" cement bricks i want to use as a retraining wall on a remote property. the soil is a very white sand. I want to make some mortar on site using just that sand and Portland (no limestone). The job is nothing fancy . What mix and ratio you recommend.
Good morning good sir, I wanted to pick your brain about a product that I have come across. The company claims their concrete does not use portland cement at all, and they provided their SDS on their website. The 3 materials apart of the mix were crystalline Silica, Ashes (residues), and Titanium(IV) oxide. Their part B is Potassium silicate. They say do not even use water with their product. This product claims to chemically bond to concrete rather than "glue" to it like the various bonding agent additions. Curious if you could shed some knowledge on the chemical process they are using! Their company is called Terrafuse! They are quite expensive, so mostly trying to figure if they are worth the money! The SDS for each are on their website, was curious if you could discuss this type of "concrete". Thanks!
Don't you also need to add sand to the masonry cement as well as water at the job site? Or am I misunderstanding you? Can cement ever be used alone out of the bag without adding addition materials? The stores sell masonry mortar mix and this blend requires only water.
Why is it that a lot of concrete that was from say 70-90-100 years ago is still in great shape yet sidewalks and foundations from 5 -10- 15 years old are cracked and in horrible shape. It is amazing the difference. Is it the fly ash and slag?
Hallo Tyler, can you break the following down for me please? I saw the following on a package of TCL Grey Bull Portland cement: ASTM C-150 BS 197-1:2000 TTS 584:2002 Can you explain the above code for me please?
Hey great lecture well worth the time. Nothing was mentioned about 'self levelling cement'. Please post a video describing the properties strength and weaknesses. Thank you
You make chemistry - maybe not interesting to me - but at least tolerable. Not a small feat! Bonus - I now understand what all the little details in concrete specs mean.
There's bunkers at the coast of France , build during German occupation. France couldn't even blow them up later, so they just let them there 70 years later. I want that concrete!
Dear Pr. Tyler I really enjoy watching your videos which are simple and deep in terms of the proposed topics that belong to concrete materials. I appreciate your work and i consider this videos as a reference to learn about this material. I have a question here, Is Plaster - especially anhydrite and hemihydrate powder- belong to non Portland Cement ? Can we say that Geopolymer is a hydraulic binder ? Thank you Pr. Tyler Yours Sincerely Elkhalil

yes hes from north america so that would make sense id think?
Hey Tyler, your videos are awesome and you always bring field knowledge as well as the theory. Thanks a lot and great video as always
you're so passionate on cement/concrete.. I love it.. subscribed.
I love his cementhusiasm!!!🎉
Awesome video! Loved it and will watch until I can remember it!
In the oilfield I have mainly used Class G, along with Type III and Type V. Also, 50/50 Poz Class G were quite commonly used too.
Thanks Newfie. Class G is very similar to Type II cement. Did you use fly ash as your pozzolan or was it a natural pozzolan?
Tyler Ley we used fly ash. As a byproduct of coal burning it was quite cost effective.

Tyler, I find expansive cement a fascinating product with so many applications. Can you cover this in more detail?
Concrete freaky deaks really hit me in the heart.

Could you please let me know the reference for the plot that compares the strenght for different cement types?
Which is the strongest? I need to resurface my driveway. Need like 1 inch thick.
pablo marquez, Now you're taking about mix designs more than the type of cement. Trinic Concrete has a lot of great videos on the subject.

Excellent highly informative.
What about natural cement and pozzolana cement?
I fell asleep listening to this guy and I can now design a skyscraper that doubles as a damn used for electricity.
I was on a Job site that they were pouring electrical Duct bank. The foreman said they use thermal cement what is that? Is it thermal conductive cement? Is strength loss why they take 3 or 6 samples to be tested every 30 days? sometimes tested up to 180 days.
What do you think of Cathodic Protection for new structures?
White cement also does not use metal ball in milling instead ceramic balls thus no metal impurities.
Thank you sir for teaching ☺️
Thanks for the comment!!!
Dear sir ... Your videos are really good.. please do the video for flyash and types ..and chemical components of fly ash
cement is actually really cool

Hi . Dr.
Pls advice how to make a quick setting cement. (water plug)

Which type of cement would be used for construction of dams?
Type IV has less C3A content and so less heat of hydration. But it is also less abundant
In early 19th century America they used natural cement to build the Erie canal
Hallo Tyler, can you break the following down for me please? I saw the following on a package of TCL Grey Bull Portland cement:
ASTM C-150 BS 197-1:2000
TTS 584:2002
Can you explain the above code for me please?
I can do a little thing on synthesis of dolomite layer by layer with salts!!! its pretty cool.
tell me about ASTM C595. what if the company just classifies it as: type 1, type 1p and type n

Anything about refractory cement bro?
Would you compare Portland to calcium sulfoaluminate cement -durability, strengths, environmental impacts, costs, etc? Thank you.
Please disregard the previous comment. This was discussed in your Alternative Cements...video.

Super awesome
Add vedio on 30'*30'plan please sir..
Thanks!!!!!!!
Not even a mention of type 1L which is all we can get now in 2023.
I think it's Ca3Al, not C3A...
That would be carbon not calcium...
Or maybe I don't get it and I'm wrong 😅
