I'm Italian. It talks about Italian history and the fact that Italy used not to be united. So it invites all italians to stay united. But it has so many historical references and the text in a quite old Italian doesn't help the understanding of the text

Yes. I am big for national unity. Italy was forever divided between the spheres of France, Austria, or even the Papalcy.

August 2, 1847. Klemens Von Metternich (austrian) wrote "Italy is only a geographical expression".
Today, the Metternich Palace, owned by Klemens Von Metternich, is the seat of the Italian embassy in Vienna with a big Italian flag above the front door.

    Brothers of Italy,
    Italy has woken,
    bound Scipio's helmet
    Upon her head.
    Where is Victory?
    Let her bow down,
Because as a slave of Rome
    God created her.
    Chorus:
Let us join in a cohort,
    we are ready for death.
    We are ready for death,
    Italy has called.
Let us join in a cohort,
    We are ready for death.
    We are ready for death,
    Italy has called!
    We were for centuries
    downtrodden, derided,
because we are not one people,
    because we are divided.
    Let one flag, one hope
    gather us all.
    The hour has struck
    for us to unite.
    Chorus
Let us unite, let us love one another,
    Union and love
    Reveal to the peoples
    The ways of the Lord.
Let us swear to set free
    The land of our birth:
    United, by God,
    Who can overcome us?
    Chorus
    From the Alps to Sicily,
    Legnano is everywhere;
    Every man hath the heart
    and hand of Ferruccio
    The children of Italy
    Are all called Balilla;
    Every trumpet blast
    soundeth the Vespers.
    Chorus
    The mercenary swords
    Are feeble reeds.
    Already the Eagle of Austria
    Hath lost its plumes.
    The blood of Italy,
    the Polish blood
It drank, along with the Cossack,
    But it burned its heart.
    Chorus
    Long live Italy,
    She has awoken from slumber,
    bound Scipio's helmet
    Upon her head.
    Where is Victory?
    Let her bow down,
Because as a slave of Rome
    God created her.
    Chorus

@@agenttheater5 Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus was a Roman consul and general who about 200 bc defeated the mighty Punic Empire with their capital Carthage on the south shore of the Mediterranean Sea, the then greatest enemy of the Roman Empire. The leader of Carthage at these times was Hannibal, who walked around the Mediterranean Sea and crossed the Alps mountain range with elephants to attack their capital city Rome. The Italians consider themselves as the successors and heirs of the great Roman Empire.

    1. The title of the anthem isn't "Fratelli d'Italia" but "Il Canto degli Italiani" (the song of the Italians)
    2. It was written by Goffredo Mameli who died during the Siege of Rome, and Michele Novaro who wrote the music. It was written during the Risorgimento by people who fought to unificate the country under one flag.
    3. It's the official Italian anthem only since December 2018. From 1946 to 2018 it was a provisional anthem, the love of Italians for this anthem is really really recent, it became popular only in 1999 when the Italian President (Ciampi) encouraged/pushed all Italians to sing the anthem standing on attent.
    4. The anthem is a Cabaletta, it was a very popular genre in the 19th century, its peculiarity is to repeat the stanzas and the chorus twice, the second with greater emphasis. The first time a tenor sing, the second the choir sing.
It starts with the sound of drums that symbolize the battles for the unification of the country, the battles to make the Italy. It tells of a soldier, a warlord (the tenor) talking to the people (the choir) after they win the battle.
Imagine something like: people hear a battle in the distance, after a while arrive Garibaldi on his horse who meet the people.
And he say "Brothers, Italy is awaken, we are fighting like Scipio did, and the Victory (an ancient Roman goddess who served Rome) is close". The People repeat with with increasing emphasis until the chorus "we are ready to death, Italy has called". Italy didn't exist at that time.
It should be played with more energy than this and with an accelerating tempo (the tempo is a moderate march at the begin and become a very excited "allegro mosso" when the crowd sing the chorus) and the tenor is missing, there is only the choir.
First stanza said what I wrote above, Italy is finally awaken, we are doing what Scipio (the Roman general who defeat Hannibal) did, the goddess Victory is on our side like always been in Rome.
Chorus: Let us join in a Cohort (that was a Roman Militar Unit), we are ready to death, Italy has called.
Second: we were downtrodden, derided for centuries because we are divided, now it's time to unite under one flag, one hope.
Third: If we are unite, with God and Love we will free our homeland.
Fourth: All the peninsula is Legnano (the battle of Legnano when Italians defeat Imperial Army of Barbarossa), we all are Ferruccio (Francesco Ferrucci who fought against the Imperial Army of Charles V during the Siege of Florence), our children are Balilla (Giovan Battista Perasso, who started - throwing a stone at the occupants - the genovese revolt against the Habsburgs), all the bells ring like bells during the Vespri Siciliani (the Siclian rebellion against the Angevins).
Fifth: The Austrian Empire is in decline, it has drunk our blood and - together with the Russians - the Polish one, but now we (Italians and Polish) are taking revenge. And the Austrian mercenary soldiers are weak.
Sixth: Long live to Italy. And the same words of the chorus.
Fun fact: Italian anthem tells about the Polish and Polish anthem tells about the Italians.

Just a note on the 2 names that are mentioned in the anthem: Ferruccio and Balilla.
Ferruccio, whose name was Francesco Ferrucci, was a florentine commander during the renaissance. At the time the Grand Duchy of Florence had gotten rid of the Medici family, after the death of Lorenzo de' Medici (that was so good at his job that he was, and still is, called "Lorenzo the Wonderful"). Pope Clemente VII (a member of the Medici dinasty) made an alliance with the Holy Roman Emperor (Charles V) to reinstate his family at the head of the city (and so the republic). Ferruccio was the general that defended Florence, dying on the line of duty.
As for Balilla, it was the nickname of Gianbattista Perasso, a kid who, on December 5th 1746, in Genoa, threw a rock at the occupying Austro-Piedmontese troops, kickstarting the revolt that led to the liberation of the city 5 days later.
Another name that is present in the anthem is Legnano, that's a town near Milan that is historically extremely important in Italian history: in 1176 Frederick II came to Italy to restore the various city-states under Holy Roman Empire's control, he was met in Legnano by an alliance of those city-states, called the Lombard League, and lost the battle, and the war. From that day Italy (northern Italy really) remained part of the HRE on paper, but was de facto autonomous.
Now, to put everything I told you in context: the anthem was written in 1847, at the dawn of the Italian Independence Wars, that were 3 wars fought not really for independence, but to liberate areas of the historical Italy from foreign rule, namely Austria. Austria at the time (and for some time) was the hegemon of the HRE, so all germanic people were perceived as Austrians, the enemy, and so the people and events mentioned in the anthem are all against either Austria (Balilla), or the HRE (Ferruccio and Legnano).

With the law 4 December 2017, n. 181, the Republic has definitively recognised the text of Goffredo Mameli's "Song of the Italians" and the original musical score of Michele Novaro as its own national anthem.

Thank you for showing respect. As an Italian it speaks about all Italians being united brothers. It speaks about history, the helmet of scipio. Scipio Was a general of rome who defeated Hannibal, leader of Carthage. It talks about great Italy being victorious and the great city of rome being created by god. Our people laughed at for centuries for being disunited in Europe. It speaks about from the alps to sicily we are all Italian brothers of a strong union. This part will be hard to explain but just take it this way.
    They are branches that bend
    the sold swords;
    Already the eagle of Austria
    has lost its feathers.
    the blood of Italy
    and the Polish blood
    Drank with Cossacks
    But its heart was burnt.
Yea it’s a confusing national anthem but we all love it in Italy.

you have to understand the historical period in which the anthem was written, in one of the most beautiful sentences it is said that Italy "has girded its head with the helmet of Scipio", Scipio (Publius Cornelius Scipio) is called this way because he is one of the greatest Roman generals, the one who wins the second Punic war in 218 A.C., a battle that changes the fate of the world and influences all Western culture and won by the Italians, so Italy in the anthem has woken up and put on its head the helmet of the greatest general of all time
