I've read Reese Howell's 'Intercessor'. I recall that he wanted to experience poverty to relate to the impoverished, but particularly to experience God's provisions. I don't recall in the book even once where Reese called sickness upon himself. I'd like to add that it was Reese's book that God used in my life as the beginning of the journey I'm on now. Before coming to know about JGLM, I next learned from Kenyon and others. I've learned and be blessed significantly by them all. If you haven't read Reese's book, I suggest that you do. There's not many examples of men of faith, trusting in the Lord to expand His Kingdom through them. Reading of how God, in Reese's life, touched others is inspiring. Reading of his dying to self is humbling.
