Charles Coburn, one of the greatest character actors of the 20th century. He had a wonderful talent of bringing each of his film roles to life by his delightful and realistic performances. Here he plays the genial older doctor and when he’s on the screen he’s a scene stealer.

I have seen this movie several times before today. I watched it as another Black and White Movie mostly because of the actors then the plot and the way it was directed, and I enjoyed it. Now, in 2024 and after reading the bio, I watch it with very different eyes. It brings tears to my eyes to see the struggles in the Dust Bowl. My dad had a farm to and it was very hard work, one year the county agent told him he had the best crop in the county and it would be the earliest to be ready for harvest . Two days before harvest we had a terrible hail storm and it beat all the wheat flat to the ground it was a sad time.

John Wayne is my all time favorite actor. I have seen every movie he ever made, but, I had forgotten about this one. Thank you for posting it, it is a lovely movie. And I always enjoy any movie the great Charles Coburn is in.
So handsome as a young man and such a gifted actor. I had never seen this one before. What a treat! I live about 40 miles SW of the end of the Oregon Trail.
Charles Coburn, like Sidney Greenstreet, came relatively late to appearing in Hollywood films, although he enjoyed a long and distinguished career in the theatre. Coburn, was the master of charm and old world gentility. Both actors and directors must have regarded him as a joy to work with, since his genial presence enhanced so many movies.
Period films like this and others such as "Grapes of Wrath" demonstrate that before WW2, this country was closer to the 19th century, both culturally, experientially, and ethnically, than after the war was over. I was born in 1952. My father served in the Navy during the war. I always sensed this before I fully understood it. And the grandparents. We are quickly losing all knowledge and practice of our old American ways. This is not just because of generational progression, it has been plotted by our enemies, who have been as clever as we have been kind.
@deaddocreallydeaddoc5244.....Hi...I was also born in 1952 and my father also served in the Navy, aboard an Escort Carrier in the Pacific Theatre. I agree with your comments. The great Industrial Revolution came to America in the latter 1700's and really exploded after the Civil War, and like you said, even up to and including WWI, we were still very much tied to and cognizant of how important agriculture was in America. I read a statistic that said up to WWI, Americans were still about 90% rural and agricultural and only about 10% living in the cities. And then a couple of inventions that I think really propelled America into the beginning of the modern age: refrigeration, which led to frozen foods ( try living without any frozen foods...lol..!! ), and then air conditioning, and the steady electrification of the rural areas, which was still being done in the 1950's and early 1960's. And of course, the gasoline engine & vehicles that made life much easier for everyone, especially the farmers with tractors and electricity for all kinds of equipment. And yes, if there were an economic collapse....no electricity, running water, refrigeration, heating & cooling, etc., millions would die, especially those in the cities who had nowhere to go. And even in a lot in rural areas many would die of starvation, but many in rural areas also know how to grow gardens & animals for meat & eggs and know how to can and preserve foods and have a well. But it would get nasty real quick and those who do not have firearms and a good local support network will be killed for their food and any other useful items.... particularly medicines. Is all this by design? We should know of the agenda of the world banking elites to bring the world under their complete control and under one currency, and the plan, mainly Marxism/Socialism, to eliminate all free nations. So...yes, but it is also a natural thing to be so under the influence of technology that people forget that hamburger meat doesn't just come from the grocery stores and fresh vegetables just from the produce aisle. America is on the brink of all out Socialism, something that the survivors of Nazi Germany, the Red Purge of Stalin, the Cultural Revolution in China, and many others who escaped the brutality and murders in Communist countries, are in shock and disbelief that this great & free nation is so close to repeating the terrible past. I am concerned...very concerned.
@@robynm7221 ...Hi, robyn. Whether it will be swift or not is the big unknown, isn't it. But we do know, or should know by careful study of Daniel, Ezekiel, and Revelation, that there are several events that must occur before Revelation is fulfilled. I think of it as a puzzle with several pieces that have not yet been put into place. There will be one currency for the world, and that hasn't happened....yet. The Anti-Christ hasn't appeared yet and converted most of the world to his false teachings. The False Prophet hasn't made his entrance onto the world stage yet. Then, the Anti-Christ will apparently receive a deadly wound and miraculously recover. there are other pieces also. The actual seven years Tribulation period will be terrible and, depending on when you think the Rapture will happen, Christians will either still be on Earth the first three years, and then the Rapture, or as some believe, Christians will be here for the full seven years. Others believe that the Rapture will happen just before the seven years Tribulation begins. I personally think that the careful studying of all of the relevant scriptures points to a mid-Tribulation Rapture. But here is another unknown: We do not know just how bad things will be before the Tribulation. So even if one is a pre-Tribulation Rapture believer, you better be mentally, spiritually and physically prepared to go through some very bad times and be ready to be persecuted and even killed for your belief. It will not be easy.
How very sad but true.there were still traces of it in the 1950s and early 1960s,but the hippy counterculture( which was the work of our enemies and transformed the most of that generation into our own enemies) finally ended it
