Great question, I went and had a good look at it, with the mattress set in the lowest position and the top 1/3 is exposed. I think a tiny finger might fit in the slot but I’m not sure about getting stuck. We have had 5 grandchildren sleep in it and have never had a problem. Maybe cover it with a strong tape if it becomes an issue. Thanks for watching .
Even if they don't get stuck, the metal is quite sharp, and can cut their fingers. Not a safe crib by my standards. Requesting someone to put tape on it to cover it is outrageous. After spending all that money on a crib, you're going to deface it with tape? Is that prospect even safe for a baby who rolls around and plays in his/her crib before falling asleep. I am very disappointed with the design of this crib, and find it dangerous. I am uncertain how it passed any safety inspections with these exposed sharp metal tracks.

That mattress did not come with my purchase, nor did it indicate I needed to purchase one!
Cribs don’t come with mattresses, they have to be purchased separately. So many options!
