Documenting where we plant what and when has been very helpful and seeing the before and after videos and pictures makes it all worthwhile. Highly recommended.
Perfect timing for this video, Jim, as I am in 7b as well in Maryland. Started some pruning last week but need to do more this week. Work tends to intervene at times! Thanks for the motivation to get moving on some of these projects I don’t tend to do.
Griffin! Holly! 😍 and Jim! Thanks for the awesome checklists. I really look forward to them. My March projects are transplanting some spirea, starting seeds, and cleaning up my drip system. Oh and all the stupid weeds.
You're so thorough. These videos really help me, as a beginner, keep in mind the things I need to be doing. I'm in Columbia, SC so your timing works out for me in that I'm going to be doing things just a short time before you are
Thank you soooo much for this detailed list Jim. It’s invaluable because I am in zone 7a...not far off from you. I’m definitely going to better map out the garden this year and keep track of particularly where my bulbs and corms are. Take care!
Thanks for the checklist. Here in zone 8 I am already a bit behind I guess. I just sowed more carrots, lettuce and sugar snap seeds yesterday. Better late than never.
Super great reminders. My first gardening day here in my Kentucky zone 6a was last Saturday. What an incredible joy. And yes, the winter weeds were there to greet me. :-)
The advice on the milkweed is absolutely amazing. I love when you get into helping out the native birds and insects!! I'd enjoy seeing you plant out some milkweed! Keep up the great work, love the b-roll too btw!!
Love these checklist videos, and I’ve been following for a couple of years and it’s so cool to have watched this channel grow like crazy! Well deserved, man.
I have a difficult landscape with steep slopes so fertilizing as recommended has been difficult and complicated. I've gotten overwhelmed in the past and usually I just give up after spending a week carefully fertilizing (I was using various slow release or water soluble depending on the plant). So, this winter, I created a spreadsheet with instructions to optimize the type of fertilizer and timing of applications by plant/location. Clearly, this approach is STILL too complicated even with organized specific instructions. Following your lead by generally broadcasting one fertilizer makes it doable and the plants get their needed nutrients. Thank you, a simple approach is a lifesaver and I can focus on all the other tasks!
What about crepe myrtle, can I still trim some back? How about butterfly bushes that were planted this past late summer fall. I live se down by Wilmington, NC.. Thank you for all your help.
Great video- Definitely saving this one. You mentioned being careful with plants with new growth just before a freeze.. I planted several purple loropetalum last fall.. fast forward to a couple weeks ago we had a stretch of really warm weather here in Eastern NC that triggered some new growth and the pink blooms that they are known for.. well we had a couple nights at freezing temps and now they look horrible. Very dry texture, dull color, and that little bit of new growth looks essentially dead. Will these be fine, and is there anything I can do to help?
Hi Mr. Putnam, I got a question for you that is NOT related to the topic of the video, but what are your views of using bottomless planters in the landscape? What are the pros and cons? Thank you🌹🌞🌹
Question about pruning azaleas once they bloom, how far back can I prune them? I have some very old ones that are very large like 5 feet tall and likely almost as wide. I really want to cut them down alot because they are pushing into my driveway and windows. How severely can I do this? Do I have to leave some leaves or can I go way down to sticks? to make it much more compact?
I have a large bed with around 20 mixed evergreens (spruces, arborvitaes and cypresses). Last fall I followed your recommendation and blew all of my leaves into the bed instead of putting them on the curb. Do you recommend leaving the leaves in the bed and allowing them to breakdown or should I remove them as part of my spring cleanup?
Hi Jim thanks for the great videos, I am wondering about moving bulbs. I planted some asiatic lilies in the fall and now want to rearrange their placement. Can i just dig them up and move them or wait until next fall? Zone 6b, cheers.
Hey Jim I put a decent amount of preen under the mulch layer in newly planted garden mid fall. Will that stop my fall planted flower bulbs from coming up this spring, didn’t think of it when I put the bulbs in about 2 months after.
Hey there! Love your videos! I have some old juniper bushesin a bed in the front of my house. Can I cut them way back? I don’t want to kill them! Thanks!
Living in southern Alabama I’m constantly fighting ant hills especially after a rain. Do you or anybody have any tips on how to get rid of those pesky pest? I’ve used the granules, but that’s not working.
Boiling water UNLESS the hill is near plants you wanna keep because the boiling water will burn the roots. I use this for out in the yard or near beds but not in beds. But it isn’t a one and done you have to battle them. You can mix borax and sugar and water to make a paste and put it on the hill. Again not a once and done. Or diatomaceous earth. Or amdro if you aren’t a stanch organic garden. I’ll use the chemicals as a last resort. They can get bad here.
@@rachelhall4808 thank you, Rachel. I’ve used that method before and it did kill my grass, but it grew back at least. Take the good with the bad I guess 😜
@@kimburnham2045 it’s my pleasure! I have ants bad in my yard and I’ve done all of the above because fire ants are not kidding around! But neither am I 😀
My snapdragons look funny. They were looking good then I looked one day and they looked really white. I thought it was a bug issue. Any thoughts? B'ham Ala
We recently bought an old farmhouse. There is about a 100 year old magnolia tree. The previous owners put pinestraw under it all the way to the drip line. I'm worried about snakes and my grandchildren. It's very close to the house and our outdoor fireplace/grilling area. I want to remove the pinestraw and place a very thin layer of pea gravel because I feel like if there is a snake under it, I'll be able to see it better. I don't want to do anything that might harm the tree. The gravel would be a lot thinner then the existing pinestraw. What are your thoughts? Will I harm the tree?
I'm in Winston-Salem. I had a beautiful yellow Lantana last summer. I just pruned the old stems off. How long until I know if it will come back? If it doesn't come back I want to dig up the old one and plant an identical one.
I have never done a soil test of any kind. Wouldn’t the results be different for different beds? I just moved into a new home and have no idea how the former owner fertilized.
We had to prune our fruit trees trudging in a foot of snow, while it was sleeting. The snow is just taking too long to melt here in Northern New England....
@@emmalavenham I tried to, but decided sliding around the ice with a pair of loppers in my hand was just begging for a tragedy to happen. I guess I’m gonna have a wild looking apple tree this year.
@@Brandon-yr3nj We really had to clean up the canopy of our apple trees this year due to water sprouts. There were just too many of them. So, we got out the small ladder, probably not the best idea...
Great info. Some of this I have done or am doing but you opened my eyes to some things I didn’t think of. As for lawns and winter/summer annual lawn weeds....is now right for pre-emergent?
Thank you! I live right down the road from you (Fuquay). If I were to get caladiums and such, should I store them in any special way until I'm ready to plant?
I have 2 hardy hibiscus and I didn't Prune them in late winter (I didn't know that's when I was supposed to do it). What do I do now? Just let it go and cut out any dead after its all come out? Help!!!
I'm in southern Texas (8b) with plants starting to push a little bit of growth right before the 10* freeze. I'm giving them some time to recover before pruning, etc. If I use organic fertilizer, would it be still too early for that to avoid stress or could I go ahead and start laying that out?
Bermuda grass or "wire grass" as my yard man called it has crept into my fruit tree bed! Just moved here and didnt know it what it was..how do i get rid of it? Digging it out is beyond my physical abilities (im 77 )..help!
