  • One of the most valuable lessons I ever learned about design wasn't something I was taught in an art class. It was information I learned when I began to study medieval heraldry in the Society for Creative Anachronism. Learn why a book cover and a street sign and a cost of arms on a battlefield are all closely related things. Most important of all, if you're a self-published author, learn why you need to care about these design elements.

Spoken like a true member of the Society For Compulsive Accuracy. ;-) I've been a Rennie for many years, so am familiar with medieval heraldry. (Although, I can't believe that I never put together the heraldry/road sign connection. ). I investigated joining SCA, but never quite made the leap. I do, however, know many SCAdians and they have regaled me with countless stories from Pennsic. I WILL get there one day.

I was never into RenFaires, mostly because they are more like a circus for mundanes, but I was long active in the SCA.

I'll agree with that to a point, however, considering I can't stand most of humanity, I've never been a "joiner" Having to deal with the politics of an organization just makes my head hurt. (And, from what my SCAdian associates have told me, there's LOTS of politics in SCA) I've been attending my local faire (Great Lake Medieval Faire in Geneva, OH) for over twenty years and have met some amazingly wonderful people who actually give me a glimmer of hope for humanity.

You don't have to get into scadian politics. I never did. You can go and have fun and dance, eat, make garb and learn fighting. Like most groups, if you just stay on the "surface" you can enjoy it. Only when you try to get deeply involved can it get political. I could see that, so I just kept it lighthearted and casual.

WarriorsArchive Incredibly busy. Published 3 new novels. Working full-time. Developing another big project called Luthorville. Haven't had time to shoot any InkShard stuff. But I do have about 10 more InkShard episodes written and ideas for quite a few beyond that. Just haven't had time to create them.
