Based on what i think this song is about based on the lyrics, i think it fits well with what’s going on in the world these last couple years (2019 and 2020): the governments of the world and what they are foisting on us. I realize that isn’t the meaning of the song but, arts power is in the interpretation of its receiver and that’s my interpretation :)
The song is about being a lonely person trying to find his place in the world and being offered promises by a group who offer a sense of belonging and identity. This group want you to join them and show one face when they want you to join ( the nice face) but when you find they have many faces and are ultimately two faced. and they want to take over your thinking and your life. The person in the song was sold and but realised he was compromising and heard a voice crying "set me free".
Howard Jones (to whom Nik is compared with in the 80s) released a song a year after this called "Why Look for the Key" that had a similar subject but is not as ethereal as Nik's! Thanks for posting my favorite Nik song!
Look up, Cloud Nine others - they’re about love (Also, he wrote “I am the one and only” which is upbeat) His cynical songs dig at politicians (Loud, Proud, Confident and Wrong is about George W Bush) and the way those “in power” manipulate your thinking.
@VittellaY This song is about religion. This is from one of Nik's interview: George Kent asks: "The song 'Faces' has always intrigued me. Is it about drugs or even religion?" Nik Kershaw: "I can't remember...but seriously, it's very difficult going back on old songs and trying to remember what you were thinking about when you wrote them...but I seem to remember it was about religion and the hypocrisy of some organised religions."
@VittellaY as far as i understood it, the song is about the different people that one meets in the world, some good, some bad, some use their face as a mask to hisde the reality . hope i helped :)
It's a critique of polytheism. Religions that have different gods for every different occasion and emotion like Hinduism. These are the different 'faces'. Gods of war, and gods of peace.
Nik Kershaw is a ledgend. He has no idea how to be mediocre, everything he composes and plays on is top notch.
he is a very inspirational and really talented musician;but the shame is that so many people have never heard of him,or any of his songs..
This is one of his best songs!

I always thought it maybe was able either a cult or socialism/communism.
One of my Nik faves :0)

Interestingly, the two are good mates. :)
@@EphemeralProductions Yes, they even performed together. Both artists are amazing!
@@Aramanth yup
Intelligent lyricist, often cynical in his songs, but like him all the same

He is one of the best lyricists of our time, in my opinion. Which is why it infuriates and gobsmacks me that more doing know his stuff!
Simply beautiful... thank you Nik :0)

Or politics?
He was lying. I know what the text is about. but its a secret, an Nik is not allowed to tell.

I like that pic of Nik, never saw before.
Always have thought this the *creepiest* song Nik ever did. At least out of the ones I've heard.

@PrincessKetty i got it off a facebook fan page :)

It's spelled Feces.
I miss Alex.
illuminati or religion?
I used to think it was an illuminati thing but, apparently, from what I’ve read it’s about world religions.
