    An M. 2 SSD is a solid-state drive (SSD) that conforms to a computer industry specification written for internally mounted storage expansion cards of a small form factor. ... The M. 2 specification supports applications such as Wi-Fi, Universal Serial Bus (USB), PCI Express (PCIe) and Serial ATA (SATA). Source: Google.

      @selmateacher7  4 роки тому

      @Makavelli Look at the name of a M.2 SSD, it literally has the name 'SSD' in it's name.

    • @selmateacher7
      @selmateacher7  4 роки тому

      @Makavelli Please just Google it once. M.2 SSD is a type of SSD . M.e3 is merely the interface. There are three interfaces that SSD normally use, which are: SATA, M.2 , and PCI-e.

      @Makavelli I find this comical. Here is the link to google showing that M.2 is in fact, SSD,

    This is a super great video comparing the differences between various Chrome Books and how to install an SSD. THe "Prince of Chrome" makes it look easy and the video is very precise. Anyone who owns a Chromebook would benefit from this video. And, if you don't own a Chrome Book but would like to install the Chrome OS on one of your older laptops, the "Prince" has videos on how to do that also. AAAAA+

    I installed a Samsung EVO 860 500Gb in my Acer C710-2487 Chromebook 8Giggles of ram. I Flashed the bios with coreboot Seabios and Turned it into a Linux Notebook. Now running UbuntuStudio 18.04 LTS . The speed of the SSD compared to the Mechanical Seagate 320Gb that was originally installed is No contest. Chrome Browser opens in 2 seconds vs almost 14 seconds. The machine also runs much cooler and battery lasts longer too.. Win win!
    PS - Wow the C720 is a bitch to open.. The C710 only has one screw in the front.. slide the bottom foward and you're in..

    Found a tossed out Acer C740 (2015), but not in good shape! Can the included M.2 be reformatted for reuse? Granted, 16GB isn't a whole lot, but maybe for other file storage!

    I checked Google and I'm not sure where Makavelli gets his understanding of the m.2 is not an SSD. I agree with selmateacher7 that an m.2 is an SSD. Everywhere you look Online, the M.2 is referenced as an SSD. The M.2 SSD's are capable of attaining high transfer speeds depending upon the type of storage interface used. A SATA-based SSD is limited by SATA's maximum limit of 600 MB/s per second. That is the only difference I find. Both are SSD's.

      It may be, for some parts. But it has the hardware ID numbers in the mainboard, so it will be seen as owned by the school. I recommend just returning it , so they can remove it from their inventory. Once they remove it , then all of the parts can be used. The school just needs to know the CB's inventory number to remove it from their Google Inventory list.

    I am glad I found this because I am having a problem with my Chrome os updating its stuck on version 55. I research some sites and it said it actually was suppose to pre-installed with version 59 and updatable to version 65. I have changed channels and check for updates but it keeps displaying its up to date. I hope reinstalling helps the update.

      selmateacher7 - Daniel Berry yes I have tried that but still on version 55. I think it could be that I'm on a hotspot on my phone. I suppose to get internet soon so I am going to see is that problem. However if now I am going to do recovery and see will that help solve the update issue.

    • @selmateacher7
      @selmateacher7  6 років тому +1

      Thank you for the reply. It is true that using only a hotspot on a phone may cause issues and unforeseen troubles as compared to having an ISP based WiFi. But still that is an interesting situation. So you have not tried a friend's or work WiFi source? I look forward to hearing more on this particular problem, as I have not run across it in the wild, until being found by your help. Question: Which brand/model of Chromebook and how long has it been since it was last connected to a ISP based WiFi? Chrome OS Version 55 is from 12/2016 and this update was excluded on some older devices, namely the HP Chromebook 11 1100-1199 / HP Chromebook 11 G1, Samsung Chromebook 2 11″ and HP Chromebook 14 (some older models). I do have these older devices in my inventory and it is true that they do not receive any further updates because of factors pertaining to the older hardware found on these units.
      Thank you again and I hope to hear more on this topic.

      I have the Chromebook HP 14-ak040wm, which I believed came out two years ago. I read that it was supposed to be pre-installed with Chrome 59 but it wasn't. I finally got wifi and I found out that is the reason why it did not upgrade further was because of my mobile hotspot. I have it on the beta channel it is now at version 67.0.3396.41 now however my model does not have google play support, but still works good so I am happy. I notice it was acting bad so I figured it was an update issue now it gives me no type of trouble.

    That’s odd. For you, it seems like checking what is free space for Downloads and Offline are opposite than what I come with on my Chromebook. When I choose ‘Offline’ under Google Drive, I get what is left of my free 15 GB of cloud storage that comes with my Gmail account. When I choose ‘Downloads’, that shows what I have left of my local machine's SSD.

    Great video. What's the biggest size SSD you can put into a chromebook? Could you use a 512gb SSD? Also could you use an NVMe?

    • @selmateacher7
      @selmateacher7  6 років тому

      The determining factor is the main board's M.2 controller. I had tested a up to a 64GB SSD with this unit and it worked. NVMe drives are much faster and use the PCI-E bus so they can make use of that speed, if the port on the main board allows for the use of the PCI-E bus. I did not test a NVMe configuration in this unit. When buying an upgraded SSD, please pay close attention to the slot and SSD pin configuration that is being upgraded. This will help you in purchasing a compatible unit. I normally found these at newegg.com Thank you for the question.

    Mr Berry, if the c/b was school issued, but is no longer used by the school or students, will replacing the M.2/SSD also remove the " managed by school" control? 🤔 So it's like a new c/b? Thanks again for all your help, time, & experience! A neighbor tossed out 2 c/be, 1 an HP, & the other a Dell. Both have screen issues, but an external monitor allows useage. The Dell doesn't have an HDMI port, so either the USB or the power port usb-c might work. Also, if you just reinstall the chrome os (after "no OS found..") will that remove the school managed control?🤔 Thanks 🤓

    • @selmateacher7
      @selmateacher7  3 роки тому +1

      No, just replacing the storage will not remove it from the school's admin inventory. In my school we have to remove the C/B's serial number from the inventory or as a tech would say, "un-enroll the device from your work or school network." Then, after the CB has been un-enrolled, we can go with the powerwash method and reinstall the OS without the school management.
      We have done the same thing in our class, the school tossed hundreds of Chromebooks that had small problems like broken screens, or missing keys, etc. My students would put in a new drive, re-install the OS and as soon as the CB was on line, Google would re-enroll the device into the school management. So I had to take the Chromebooks that we fixed and bring them to the school tech and I asked him to remove these devices from the school enrollment. It took some time, as he had to key in each Chromebook's serial number. But after he removed it, the CBs were no longer "managed by the school."

      I am sorry to tell you this, but the CB3-532 is simply an older Chromebook design that lacks a touchscreen. You can see it's AUE date here (2022) Link:
      support.google.com/chrome/a/answer/6220366?hl=en
      They make many versions of the 532. My class was buying and using the BC3-532 Granite Grey, years ago. and yes they still sell them on Amazon, Ebay and at Acer Re-certified: acerrecertified.com/chromebooks/15-6/ The unfortunate thing is that the 532 lacks a touchscreen, faster CPU, and large storage found on other Acer Chromebooks models, like the CB515, that have a AUE date of 2024 and later. The 532 is still capable of doing chores like running Google Web Apps, and extensions. ( One of my students still uses his CB3-532 to create Documents, spreadsheets, and Presentations in Google drive.) I do not believe that it will have the Android Play Store or Linux as those features require faster or more powerful CPUs, and a touchscreen.
      I hope this helps. I have many videos on getting the most out of the Chrome OS, see my playlist :

If it would start the recovery process and then just randomly stop, citing "An unknown reason", then it is this. Look for an older recovery image and upgrade to current after it boots. Are there low-end models that have RAM that can be upgraded?
    What I hate about how laptops of all stripes seem to be spec'd out is if you want lots of ram on a lower end computer you can't get it. They make you jump up into a a higher end CPU as well.
    I don't mind a low end CPU on a chromebook BUT I don't want to have to spend $500 in order to have a bunch of tabs open without the machine chugging. Some of that is going to be CPU of course, but I would expect RAM to be a large bottle-neck as well.
    Thoughts on lower end with upgrade-able ram?
    * I forgot to say that I also want to comfortably run a secondary OS as well, thus more ram the better. Not just for more chrome tabs.

    • @selmateacher7

      Thank you for the comment. First you do not need to spend $500 for a new Acer Chromebook 15 Touch. I just did a video on comparing its performance to other Chromebooks and it is the best performer for the price. Here is the video ua-cam.com/video/EdZSn0eKj6E/v-deo.html Next, newer laptops are now slimmer, lighter, so they come with fewer “swappable” parts there are. And so, like smartphones and tablets, all modern (2017+) Chromebooks come 'as is'. Batteries are now built-in, RAM and SSD modules soldered to the motherboard. In my newest videos, I go over opening up and seeing what is still upgradable on this current generation of computers.

      mjs28s - it is unlikely that an older low-end model can be upgraded with more RAM. You have to look at the CPU in such low-end models as many of those older Celeron or ARM processors are just not able to address more than 4Gb of RAM, or 16GB "disc" (eMMC) memory. So that's why you'll see that the higher specs for memory also include a more expensive CPU chip. It would be cool if the higher-end Chromebooks would start using SATA SSD drives so they could be easily and consistently upgraded. I suspect that may be coming given Google's ongoing push to enable Linux on the Chromebook.

    Chrome books look silly to me. Yes, Chrome books are super fast booting. The Chrome OS is simple and quick booting and shutting down. Hell you just close the lid and open it later when you want and within seconds I can get back to computer stuff. ......That is handy........... Chrome books use super fast and expensive solid state memory. So it is small. Real small. 16GB sometimes small. Crap..... my videos...... just on how to properly break-in a new cam in a small block Chevy with over 1/2 an half an inch of lift is near 20GB's!!! Man you don't want to screw that up !! Truly Chromebooks are just terminals to the internet. Users are to save EVERYTHING to the "cloud". No need to have a big on-site backup storage system. The cloud will protect and save all my memories forever (for a small on going price ......forever) !!? Me not like. However me like fast..... if one can jack-up a little Chrome with a bad little SD card and double storage memory? Me must rethink.

      They do so much more now. They work offline and I use mine to create videos , do my books, and play my games. My latest videos show that. Thank you for the comment. Now.. not everything is in the cloud, because they work offline with apps and data being stored locally on the computer. Due to that fact, I have newer videos on how to upgrade the storage by using micro SD card, changing a few things in settings, etc.
