This man and his music have been a part of my life for over 60 years. So it is just wonderful to hear the comments of those who knew him and played with him
He was so much more than just an instrumentalist. Much more. Not the warmest personality for sure but, apart from that, a unique talent who left the world a huge and beautiful body of work.
What seperates an individual from all others? In Shaws case was it ability, drive, ethnic origins, perhaps some incremental physical feature, a psychological quirk, a one in a million combination of all these things? One will never know. He was Artie & it was music. Very interesting fellow. I'm surprised he never turned to a life long addiction of drugs, booze or some other vice.
from Dixieland to the avant garde and everything in between.. Artie Shaw good as any jazz artist any jazz musician on their respective instrument regardless of the era
