A huge thank you!! I always find it annoying that there is no estimate of how much thread to buy when starting a project. Knitting patterns have yardage amounts but not tatting. Its very frustrating for a beginner tatter. This helps me so much. I have tatted a section of pattern then took it apart and measured the core thread and the knot thread. Its very time consuming.
Excuse me again. The total length of the thread will be wired continuously into two shuttles or this total amount refers only to one shuttle (that is used as the core thread), meaning I'll have to wind this amount of thread length to each shuttle separately? Thank you for responding to each one of my confusions and comments. I value and appreciate the effort :) If any of my questions is not clear to you ask me and I'll rephrase
This method gives you the total amount of thread you need and is wound between the two shuttles. Depending on the pattern, I usually use a ratio of 60:40 (wind 60% on one shuttle and 40% on the other) as rings use more thread than chains... but this will depend on your pattern. You could always do two separate equations if you wanted to be more accurate - one equation for rings and one equation for chains. I hope that helps!
Hi:), excuse me,why do you divide by 10? If 10 here refers only to the number of rings you want your total calculated stitches shared into, shouldn't you take the chains into consideration too? But again I guess it doesn't really matter how you divide them in paper, as it's only for calculating purposes, and you will later distribute them however you want, right? I in no way want to sound rude I just want to understand. Thank you for reading this and I'd be glad to receive an answer from you, I appreciate the effort you put in those videos to share your knowledge. Bye!, Christina :)
I don't think you're being rude, I'm very happy to answer your questions... but may I suggest you watch the video again? I am also not meaning to sound rude, but you have misunderstood the information. The 10 doesn't refer to the number of rings, it refers to the number of double stitches. At the start we work out that we need 8cm of thread to work 10DS. Once you have counted ALL your stitches (rings AND chains) you divide the total number of DS by 10. This number is then multiplied by the length needed for 10DS to give you the total calculation for your pattern.
So, I have a question... How do you determine how much thread to load on your shuttle out of your calculation for the round? I'm doing MULTIPLE circle motifs that are joined at the picots on the chains. I need to know how to calculate how much thread to wind on the shuttle to minimize wasting of thread.
I would use this method for one motif. It can be broken down to use for single motifs or for whole patterns - the principle is the same. Does that make sense?
@@NooBearAus Yes, it does make sense. What I tried doing instead of 10 DS, I tatted the ring and chain element for my pattern. Then untatted it and measured only the shuttle thread used, and multiplied that amount by the number of repeats of the elements to make the full motif. I've got it half tatted now and it looks good so far. I may have enough to complete it. I'll let you know the result. Your tutorial is so well done and simple enough for us newbies to understand. I have bookmarked it for future projects that I'm not sure if I have enough thread to finish the project. Thank you for posting this!!!!!
@@NooBearAus OK, it worked out, I had about 8 inches to spare even! Had to use a loading loop but it worked out in the end! Now I will add a few more inches and I'm off to the races!
Missing something here. If using two shuttles, how much do you wind on each one? Rings will use only shuttle one (most of the time) , but chains require thread from both. Thanks. The Over-analyze Queen !!
Thank you SO MUCH for this video! This is seldom talked about so this is a GREAT reminder for me.
You're welcome!
I took this a bit farther and measured for picots and core thread needed for both shuttles 👍
Great!
Thank you so much! So, so useful!
You're welcome🙂

Oh wow, yes that would take a lot of time - and waste your thread! So happy this video helped you.
Once again..a great video and very helpful information! Thanks so much!
Thank you!
That is very helpful, thank you dear 👍👌😊
My pleasure 😊
Thank you

That is awesome! I always have loading loops on my shuttles - it's amazing how much thread is wasted without these gems. So glad it worked for you.
