- Lolla: The Story of Lollapalooza, a 3-part docuseries, premieres May 21, exclusively on Paramount+.
In the summer of 1991, the Lollapalooza music festival was born. What started as a farewell tour for the band Jane’s Addiction rose from the underground to launch a cultural movement and change music forever. LOLLA: THE STORY OF LOLLAPALOOZA, a 3-part documentary, depicts the exciting and strangely symbiotic 30+ year relationship between the iconic festival and Perry Farrell (Jane’s Addiction, Porno for Pyros). Throughout the series, Farrell reconnects with what the event has become and its cultural significance across multiple genres and decades. Featuring: Perry Farrell, Chance the Rapper, Flea, Trent Reznor, Ice-T, Tom Morello, Lars Ulrich, Vernon Reid, and more.

90’s lollapalooza still is untouchable. Those band lineups were insane.
The first one in 91 will never be topped.
I went to the first three and all three are in my top ten shows I’ve ever seen. And, I’ve been to a lot.
@negativeindustrial I was at 92, 93 and 94 and I agree with you they were all great. 92 in Houston Texas there was 60,000 people at the fort bend county fairgrounds I'll never forget that day
@@markgiordonello6710
Bro, I saw ‘92 and ‘93 in Houston! Ministry was insanity, my favorite of the bunch.
You missed the first one because it was in Dallas, huh? A bunch of us crammed into a tiny doodoo brown Toyota and made the trek up.
93 - TOOL, Rage Against The Machine, Alice in Chains, Primus, Fishbone
We will never ever get a Lolla again like we did in the 90’s. Truly the golden era for music and huge bands worldwide. Totally GOAT’d.
Fo sho!
Music today is nothing like the music of the 90s.
the phones ruin the experience for themselves and others
Too much robot voice 😂
People said the exact same thing about the 70s.
The first 2 Lollapaloozas were epic statements for Gen X and the real alternative nation 👍
"cash in now honey"
I went in 1994. Green Day opened at noon. Beastie Boys and Smashing Pumpkins headlined.
Me too! In Vancouver. It was amazing!!!
🖤🖤🖤
Me 3 in Compton!… still glad i missed Green Day 👍🏽
Me too!! St Dominguez Hills, CA!!
@@handtogocam Lolol!!
Phoenix, it was hot
91-94 so many incredible bands
The best
I went to the 1994 one in Philly. From what I remember it was amazing.
Im tired of people hating on the year Metallica played. I went to that one. I saw The Melvins, The Ramones, Rancid, Waylon Jennings, Rage Against The Machine, Soundgarden and Metallica. I was 17 years old, one of the best days of my life.
Ditto! That was the first Lolla I went to and I was 17 too and it changed me in the best way possible
It just wasn’t the same vibe and I’m a huge Metallica fan but a lot of that backlash was the whole Load thing.
Everyday in the 90s was the best day of my life
Screaming Trees???
@@anarchy030 Ok the Load thing I can understand somewhat It's not a bad album at all.
Went to the first three. Epic, and I have yet to see any other concert lineup that tops those. A non-commercial free-for-all that was about music, not merch or status. Glad to be part of that.
The first 5 or 6 years will remain untouchable for the history of music festivals. This isn't hyperbole, it's fact. I would plan my entire summer around Lollapalooza. Listing all the acts I saw throughout those years would take a long long time.
Such memories!!! The world will never know how awesome these festivals were in the 90’s unless you were there. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
“Let’s bring real music to the world” *shows marshmellow*
😶
The music and art “movement” is pretty much gone from Lollas now.
absolutely all it does now is f*cking latin Trap bullsh*t it's f*cking p*thetic asl fr
Im glad you got NIN for this, hoping to also see some input from how KoRn was handled with them dropping out halfway thru in 97.
Took my 16 yo niece (birthday gift) to Lollapalooza 1992 stop at SPAC in Saratoga Springs NY. It was the wildest (Jim Rose sideshow circus), most intense music festival I ever attended. My fav memory: After the first main stage band (Lush) finished their set, thunderstorm rolled through. The SPAC 'cheap seats' lawn, sloped down to the music shed, became a massive mudslide with soaked people mashing up the grass. Then, Pearl Jam (1st national tour for album Ten), came on. First song (Once) started. Then, 1,000 of people - in ONE SINGLE WAVE OF HUMANITY - ran downhill through the mud, pushed down barriers into the amphitheater seating area, bowled over ushers & security guards, ripped out several rows of front seats, and created an indoor mosh pit. Totally unhinged joy!
ironically its turned into the exact thing they were trying to fight back when it started
Lollapalooza HAD ALWAYS BEEN MAINSTREAM
go ask the simpsons!
EXACTLY
@@eddiejoewalt7746 well better/worse yet it was always full of sh*t it simply started as a business and remained a business just like this f*cking bullsh*t a** documentary it's all just for show pun kinda intended
The irony of the voiceover saying “real music” while simultaneously showing a clip of a knob twister with a marshmallow helmet.
For the kids :(
kinda of like the irony of a “real music” lover who cares enough to watch this trailer but doesn’t know the guy who founded the festival is a DJ now.😂
@@adamhainsfurther8644 oooh… got me!
LOL
boomer 🙄
The 90s were everything!
Where's Siouxsie?! She was the best thing about the first Lollapalooza as far as I was concerned back in 1991--and today!!
💯
Thank you!
She was sick when they played Great Woods, MA. Never got to see her.
She’s on that list and I certainly hope she is on this documentary!!!
No the best thing was the Butthole surfers!
@@jlobiafra they were so so great...and it was hilarious to see them in the middle of teh afternoon
Yup, 94 at Dominguez Hills. Crazy concert! Green Day, Beastie Boys, and of course Smashing Pumpkins!
I saw the first three years. They were pretty amazing shows.
I so hope there is footage from Great Woods in 92. Where the back fence was torn down. And massive bon fires were going on.
The people dancing around the fire was probably us at Pine Knob outside Detroit. Not entirely sure why we started small bonfires on the hill, but we did partway into Jane’s set. We just danced around them, then let ‘em burn out. Nothing was damaged, nobody was hurt, and we all had a blast,
What year was that? I was at the Detroit lollapaloozas in the 90's
Was at the first one in Phoenix... great memories!
Siouxsie. Last Beat of My Heart.
The BEST moment.
Exactly!!!
I love the energy from this right out the gate !
Live in Chicago, stay far away, but the aftershows are great usually
Went to the first one 1991 in Cleveland. Will never forget it.
Most oxímoron EVER: Real Music & Marshmello...
THANK YOU
Went to 1991 and 1992 in St Paul MN. What a time!
Janes Addiction is the greatest and best rock/alt band of ALL TIME... !!! FIGHT ME LOL ..its true..ive been a fan since the 80s...
Three Days in my top 5 songs ever .
I saw Jane's Addiction in 1990 then Nirvana in 1991 both at First Ave in Minneapolis. Nirvana was great, Jane's Addiction was incredible!! When Jane's was firing on all cylinders no one could touch them back then.
The original Jane's will never be topped. They were everything a rock band should ever hope to be. Their live shows are legendary.
The year i decide to attend Lolla and a whole documentary gets released about it! Right on!
Did I just catch a glimpse of Pine Knob sod in the sky? Al Jorgensen is not gonna be happy about that.
I was at the Waterloo Village show. Blew my mind.................
Perry Farrell is a fascinating guy!
He's always been like a comic book character come to life. I mean that in a good way.
Perry Ferrell is awesome with or without Jane's Addiction.
With age he is morphing into my mother in law
Thats why its sold out this year with a waiting list for a now 4 day pass.. 🤟
Perry ❤
At least Steve Albini doesn't have to endure this.
Need one of these for Glastonbury
Can't wait to c this !
“Let’s bring real music…” shows a DJ
You either die a hero...
The poor man's Woodstock
It was the only way I could see some of the Brit bands like Stereolab and Boo Radleys. They’d never come to Tampa bay solo
"Take the whole day off". So much LSD.
still no M. Bungle...
1994 Rollerkate Skinny - good times
Great band
Should have called this doc "Putting Lipstick on a Pig: How The First Travelling Festival Lineup Turned to Garbage in Less Than a Decade and Transformed Perry Farrell from Interesting Frontman to Corny Promo Bro."
It was cool.
Never drink and drive. Never text and drive. Stay sober and alert out there! Arrive alive.
I hope this is great because what I don’t want to see is too much time spent on anything past the 1990s.
The first year by far was the best. Steady decline after that 🙏🏼🤘🏼
There's a new book coming out too... looks like a massive $ marketing machine move.... BUT I went to a ton of these shows & a lot of them were really awesome
Went to the first 3 and some in the late 90s. I always hated seeing local festivals that used palloza .
THERE'S NO F*CKING WAY JANE'S ADDICTION CREATED THIS FESTIVAL BRO WHAT THE F*CK???????????????????????????
coachella? lol!!!!!!!!!!
🤘💜
Good times, it did feel like a revolution at the 1st one.
Absolutely.
There was more footage of Lori “Beetlejuice” Lightfoot who is the worst mayor in history, than of Chris Cornell & Soundgarden. I can’t believe I wasn’t a couple hours of my life watching this.
I love you, Perry!❤
Jessica Hopper.... Please, tell us things...
I haven’t heard that name in so long!
Now do a Bonnaroo one
aren't all of the stages named after corporations now?? X_X
and now it's just another corporate festival like the ones it protested against 😭
Yeah and now it's a total joke! Glad we got to enjoy it at it's best!
lollapalooza became idk this corporate mainstream thing its odd ya know once something becomes mainstream its like it slowly dies
lol it costs $150 for a single day, it's all gone now, everything that had some soul for this festival has been sold
Three part marketing series.
THEY WERE EATEN BY THE MONSTER THEY FIGHTED AGAINST.
Like it was yesterday
Pavement said F-OFF to all of it. Someone had to.
Of course they did, edgy.
dude....pavement played lollapalooza in Vancouver in 1995 --- their set was horrible, but they were there.
That's right. And they were paid well apparently, but they felt like party crashers.
I wish people would stop trying to recapture the 90s. It's not gonna be the same and it's not supposed to be. If you weren't there, you missed it. Sucks for you but oh well.
A win for us 😂🇦🇺
That's what people in the 90s said about the 60s. 😁
@@ThunderPants13 not this little black duck
The people of now have to create for now, not recreate the old and tired, no matter how good the old was.
Now in days i recognize only 8 artists on the linup and every other artist name has a weird name. Even the headliners i have no clue who they are and im only 36 and have been listening to music and going to shows most of my life. I guess they gotta get super underground these days only tik tok generation will understand
"The bad boys of hard rock" - I hope he's not referring to Metallica aka. the radio friendly, mainstream, semi-hard rock band
They’ll never be forgiven for The Black Album 😭😭😭
The butthole surfers were the greatest band during the first tour
Esse sim foi o verdadeiro festival Lollapalooza, o atual festival é uma vergonha, as edições no Brasil são uma porcaria 👎🏻🇧🇷
NiN
Oh, so its a marketing movie for the new shows. Whack.
@@lednails did you grow up with 90s music or did you grow up in the 90s? Huge difference.
Who cares about the story? Why not just release concert footage from different bands?
Kpop groups Ive, vcha and stray kids will perform at this year's lollapalooza
looked great until i saw jessica hopper........justice for Kurt
You lost me at Lady Gaga...
I'm sorry,, we're they just trashing Metallica?.. 😂

Phew.. Thought i saw a terroristic flag in the end
It's just as idiotic to think a whole country are terrorists because there is a terrorist group in them as it is to think the whole country of the US is white supremacist because there are white supremacists organizations in it
Dude, no one cares about Lollapalooza. All the poser kids would attend these concerts back in the mid-late nineties.
The music documentary nobody asked for...except for Perry "omgpleaselook@me" Farrell.
