interesting experiments. what about mixing - 0.5 chat 0.5 sand and 1 soil? also on the dual wall, what about the stray being sandwiched between two layers of cob?
That mixture would do well. I'm quite sure of it. Good idea!
You could sandwich the straw, but your load-bearing cob wall would be split into two. I think you'd lose some load bearing capacity. And/or the two cob walls would need to be tied together through the middle with rebar, which would be a hassle.
Yeah, mixed aggregate size might offer the best of both worlds, but I doubt it. The fine grain gives a solid but more pliable mix where the bigger grain may offer more structural strength but also makes the structure more fragile and prone to cracking and moisture problems because it’s less monolithic. I’d probably go with the sand because you never have enough big stuff in the mix for it to really pay off in terms of strength and the fine grain has more surface area than the big stuff so it should stick better and disperse the load more evenly....
I just found your channel a few days ago and I'm really impressed with your work. You're trying out a lot of good ideas and I'm sure this will help a lot of people. You mentioned the CobBauge project in another video and I spent all of yesterday studying their material about double walls. Very interesting!
I hope we can start to see a network of builders and materials suppliers start to develop so that designers like myself can propose cob structures. I'm a residential designer and I'm assembling stock plans from my own designs, to sell online. I'd really like to be able to offer a set of a dozen or so designs optimized for cob construction. So I'm studying up to learn more about the construction details. Your videos have been extremely helpful.

I believe this block would have an R12 insulation value. If memory serves me correctly!
Do you see there being a structural limit with how much straw you could apply this way before it won't hold?

Hello.. how do you sticth the two walls together? What's to prevent them from peeling apart. Are they joined by rebar or simply 'stuck ' together with clay slip?
On that dual wall concept would it be the straw-clay layer that is the inside face? If so I would assume a plaster layer over that? I too live in Eastern Tennessee and will be building our home for my family so I have been paying close attention to how TN red clay behaves. Thank you for your videos.
The straw-clay portion would be on the exterior of the building actually. I would give it a good coating of lime plaster, for sure. It would do very well!

What would be th thermal value of this dual wall? Does it give you a good U-Value? Looks a very solid system.
Straw-clay R value is usually about R 1.5 per inch. I calculated this a few months ago, I think the total R value for this particular dual wall is R12.
Are these stabilized?
