- Learn about clothing fit for a wife of Henry VIII!
I've loved Tudor history, especially the six wives of Henry VIII, since I was a kid and it has always been a dream of mine to have an historically accurate Tudor gown! A couple years ago, I finally felt that my sewing and research skills were up to the challenge. The outfit consists of a linen smock, a wool and silk satin petticoat, a silk satin kirtle, and a fur-trimmed gown, and is completed with a "gabled hood" (a modern fashion history term for the bonnet, front, paste, and edging that make up this style of headwear).
There are a lot of misconceptions about Tudor clothing (they didn't wear corsets!) so I hope this sheds some light on the various layers and accessories involved in dressing a Tudor queen like Anne Boleyn or Jane Seymour.

Fun fact! There was a mini ice age during the Middle Ages into the Tudor era. That’s why it was incredibly important to have heavy, warm fabrics.
I've always wondered how women could bear all those layers. Climate explains it.
And they wore natural fabrics which were very breathable compared to the synthetic fabrics we use today.
That makes sense.
I still overheat in natural fabrics.
Another channel said that it was colder in Elizabethan times. I imagine that the ice age is what they were referring to.
@@catherinejustcatherine1778 my understanding is that most of English history post 13-14thC (they weren’t much colder than now) are a few degrees colder than now. But the Tudor period was even more so. Given also that these people (the poor more than the rich) were normally much hungrier than we were especially in winter (anyone who’s been underweight can attest to the intensive cold it brings) I can only imagine how freezing english winters must have felt in their drafty wooden homes.

That makes sense. I appreciate the context.
Forget Disney princesses, I want to look like a Tudor queen 😍
Better than Disney princess
For real I want one day to be able to style with an historical dress somewhere and take part in some event that recreates old Noble parties
Right? It looks so modest yet classy and expensive.
U mean, without a head? :))
Same
The Tudor era may not necessarily be my favorite, but simply put, that gown is absolutely amazing!
Thank you!
I’m trying to build the Anne of Cleves Sticklchen and I want to die :)
*Samantha's ancestors from the 16th century watching her:* She has a dress worthy of a queen and 'tis not the only dress she has! Our daughter prospers and how proud we are!
It's fascinating to see the way Tudor clothes often have these mix-and-match elements, to make clothes adaptable to different seasons or change up a look, it's such a practical and economic practice!
Capitalism nowadays would never😂
@@mollyleblanc9906 the entire reason why I dress vintage from medieval times I my closet can’t fit x1000 shoes
I love how, in modern times of course, you could wear just the petticoat and/or the kirtle out and it would look BALLER AS HELL.
god, i have no clue why this video isn't closer to the top of the search results when you look up 16th century fashion. i'm glad i found it!
This is so good that someone passing by probably thought they saw a ghost.
You've done an incredible job--absolutely stunning.
couldn't agree more!
What a great talent!!
I love that you paid such close attention to detail when it came to your fabric choices, facings, hems, closures, etc. The colors all compliment one another beautifully and make up a distinct, cohesive, well planned and expertly executed look in its entirety! I hate when I find a video of "dressing a tudor lady" and it's mismatched pieces where the colors and fabrics clash. It doesn't give an accurate (or visually pleasing) depiction. Thank you for sharing your hard work and skill!
YAAAASSSS QUEEN!!! Like, actual royalty though, not the cheap knock-offs they sell at party city. Excellent job
Thank you so much!! :D
Ahhh! I'm so excited. I love that you have so much Tudor content. This outfit is absolutely gorgeous. This period is tragically underrepresented on UA-cam and in mass-market patterns.
Thank you! Good to know! I love earlier periods but everyone seems to prefer 18th century and Edwardian right now! I will definitely have more 16th century vids in the future :)
That is gorgeous - and meticulously done. I'm a detail hound, and would like to know if you've found any info on whether trains had special - and easily replaced - facings, or braid, or whatever, to protect them from the effects of dragging along the ground.
Thank you! I haven’t yet seen anything specifically for adding extra protection for trains, but they very likely were fully lined and that lining could be replaced as needed.
That house literally screaming "TUUUUUDOOOORS"
You are a very talented lady to be able to create something as beautiful as that. Well done! I'm sure the you from the past would be so proud 🥰👏🏻
oh my goodness the gable hood is INCREDIBLE!! the entire outfit is lovely but that hood really jumped out at me - it's gorgeous!
You are the OG costuming queen! Thank you for sharing the amazing details of your Tudor outfits with us!
Everything about this video was a delight: the scenery, the music, the information and you, of course, as pretty as always. Thank you for sharing 💐
Wow! You have a unique look that really goes well with the period clothing. You look like the real thing brought to our time!
This entire ensemble is gorgeous! I love the faux fur especially, and I can;t believe how perfect the pattern on the gold fabric is! I wonder - is it common for so much of the back and neck to show? Did they ever wear anything like a fichou (no idea how to spell that) for warmth? Also, what are you wearing for shoes?
Thank you! Yes, in this period it was very fashionable to have wide, open necklines. You see it in a lot of portraits (for example, Princess Elizabeth). There are partlets for covering the neckline though.
You look amazing!! It's fascinating to see one of these videos for an era I know nothing about, and all you pieces are so beautifully made and fitted.
Thank you!
Having performed on the stage for 17 years when I was younger (and coming from a theater family with a mother who played Catherine of Aragon in "Royal Gambit"), I appreciate attention given to realistic costuming, and this is nothing short of magnificent! Some of the detail I knew already, but most I did not. I can only imagine the time you spent on research and creation of this gown, let alone the cost. My only critiques would be to share a little about how heavy and/or ungainly this gown may have been for you, as well as an estimate of how long it might take to dress the woman at the time. Thank you for sharing your hard work with us, and I'll definitely be looking at more of your videos!
What a beautiful gown. Well done!
Gorgeous, the dress and you both. And a very informative video. AND an amazing setting. Thanks for this!
Great research and fantastic work! It doesn’t hurt that you resemble Anne Boleyn from her portraiture. Definitely a gown fit for a queen.
God if only I knew how to sew!! I’ve been wanting a Tudor gown since I was 7! 😭 This is extremely beautiful and well done! Bravo!
Anne boylen never wore a gabled hood. She said it looked to frumpy and too much like Cathrine. She wore more french hoods as she was raised in the french court. Cathrine of aragon and jane seymore wore english hoods
Amazing and stunning! I always love seeing your work, and it's great to see it in motion!
What beautiful work. I hope you realize how much people like myself admire and love the work you do. I often paint historic costumes and your attention to detail is fantastic. I like the high school Anne Boleyn sunglasses. Haha
Simply stunning!! The construction is great, the historical info is amazing and I’m so happy to found your channel. There isn’t enough high end Tudor info on costube, and super happy to see more of it, especially about that odd shaped hood! Thank you!
I can’t believe how talented you are. Such a variety of costumes presented on your channel and so much information about the most minute details.
delighted to find your youtube channel, I've been admiring your creations on The Couture Courtesan for years
Wonderfully done! I really enjoyed your detailed descriptions and your close-ups of the garments you were describing. Your gown is beautiful and the portraits are striking! Thank you for sharing. Looking forward for more!!
Super stunning work once again!
I loved this video, not only are the pieces gorgeous and the craftsmanship excellent, but the research that obviously went into this project is incredible. Even though it wasn’t a terribly long video you were able to show us the care and thought that went into this jaw-dropping outfit. Thank you so much for showing us this and if you couldn’t already tell I enjoyed it immensely! :)
So beautiful! I can't believe the amount of work you put into that. Love the look of Tudor clothing and enjoy dressing up for Ren Faire, but happy to have my jeans and tee shirts for day to day life.
This video is so lovely, and your work on the gowns is incredible . Kudos to you!
Well done! A beautiful gown and you look smashing in it! Thank you for sharing.
Oh wow! You did an excellent job on this ensemble! Inspiring!
Stunning gown! And your photos are lovely. I didn’t know some of this stuff! Love hearing about where you learnt about the makeup of this outfit.
Beautiful work, great filming location!
I love both the French and Gabled hood on you! It's so cool to see these pieces on a moving person rather than paintings.
I was so pleased to find this video! I have been wanting to construct a 1540s ensemble, and this is so helpful!
I am so happy to see the 'Croft pop up in the background on my UA-cam suggestions. Nicely done.
Thank you for such a wonderful and informative piece. The dress is gorgeous!i especially like that you looked at bills and information from that time period! Kudos!!
Thank you so much!
Loved watching this. So lovely to see and hear about their beautiful gowns. Thank you 💜
It’s so beautiful! You look incredible, the colors and details and sillhouette are all so so elegant
Your work and attention to detail here is utterly exquisite. You make me want to try making Tudor garments! Fantastic job!
You are beautiful and the gown accentuates your beauty. This gown and hood are stunning! Great video, and I hope to learn more from you on Tudor reproductions.
The burg is my hometown! It’s nice to see someone showing off the lovely historic parts of Va with beautiful and historically accurate clothing! Love your videos
This video was shown as an educational video in my costume history class! My professor said she loves finding videos like yours with all the research and said it was incredible that you made this all yourself :) congratulations and thanks for this video for helping me with finals
this is so pretty. dying for that red petticoat; guess I just have to wait for the reprint of Patterns of Fashion 😭 I'd love to see any behind the scenes for making these types of clothes. Or even just more discussion of the period fashion.
😭 omg my goodness, you look like you stepped right out of a Holbein painting. Perfection! ❤
This is gorgeous
you did a fantastic job in these designs, and all the historical facts behind the why was really cool!
Absolutely fascinating and so much detail in the making! Thanks for sharing
Beautiful❣ Beautiful❣ the gown and all the detail is beautiful❣ This video was in every way a lovely work of art...
I didn’t know you were on UA-cam! Christmas has come late this year!
Really enjoyed watching this, beautiful dress, what a great talent you have, well done! You look just as I imagine Anne Boleyn would look too. I love the gable hood, thank you for posting.
This is amazing, far more accurate looking than certain shows and films 💕
I love that you also explain everything rather than just showing pictures! The clothing is so sumptuous and the history is quite fascinating!
Thank you so much!
Absolutely mesmerizing! For a history buff and Tudor Era aficionado this is truly a treat!
I'm sewing an Anne Boleyn dress for class right now! this was very helpful!!
Beautiful. Excellent information.
This is so amazing!! I used to be really into historical fashion, but due to a few different circumstances I threw a lot of my things away :( Watching this and other videos really wants me to try to make garments again. ALSO I love your 2005 picture lol
The Gable Hood is my absolute favourite, so flattering and pretty. This one you made is stunning
OMG...This was so well done and so informative. Your gown is breathtaking. I am subscribing!!!
I am so late to the party but this is incredible! You have my subscription. I love and appreciate how you explain what the fabric types are called (that always seems to be the biggest challenge for me... Finding the right type of fabrics.
What a lot of detailed and lovely work. Congratulations.
This clothing looks great on you ! Beautiful with this headwear piece.
Thank you for uploading! I've been super excited to see the video on this gown, so when I saw this video pop up in my recommended section, I clicked right away. I love reading about the construction of historic gowns but it's so illuminating to have a layer-by-layer look. This is definitely one of my favourite reconstructed tudor gowns that I've seen, it just looks so phenomenally regal! Wonderful job! (Also, I'm delighted you chose to go for a gable hood. It's one of my favourite pieces of historic fashion, and I think you've really conveyed how elegantly they can be designed!)
Thank you so much!!
WOW! This is one of the best I've seen!
I didn't quite understand re. the sleeve pulls, or how the hat was made.
Marvelous work! How beautiful! Thank you for a great video. 🎉👏👏👏
I’d just joined my local SCA when COVID hit, so haven’t de to any events yet. But I will be in a few months now that restrictions are lifting so I need some outfits. This is inspiring 🥰
Lovely video! Thank you for sharing!
Wow, this is amazing, thank you so much for sharing!
historical fashions fascinating and great channel
This was incredible to see, and hear about, and such a look! Is it bad that I wish there were vids of the making? Gorgeous result and looks very good on.
Very cool video!! Great job 💖
An absolutely beautiful gown. Your handiwork is amazing. Though I am not a seamstress by any stretch of the imagination, I have always loved researching historical clothing.
Stunning! Great work, Samantha.
Samantha just found your channel. You could be hired as a Tudor Costume Consultant on documentaries! I've never seen Tudor fashion look so professionally designed and tailored that it looks like it was made during that era by royal seamstresses themselves. I've seen so many sloppy Tudor costumes where they look disheveled, especially the hoods. Yours look like it came straight out of the royal wardrobe!
Wow! Thank you so much for sharing this with us. What a beautiful ensemble! New subscriber here. Sending best wishes from Down Under ❤️🌺🇦🇺😎
You look like a gorgious portrait that has come to live, absolutely breathtaking. ❤️
Beautiful work Samantha. So authentic, It wouldn't look out of place at Hampton Court.
Anytime I see hand stitched eyelets it fills me with so much joy thank you
You did a fantastic job with this gown! You look marvelous. If only the film and television costumers would put as much effort into their product...
This is awesome 👏 If only this much effort went into making the clothing in period dramas historically accurate
Enjoyed this video so much!
Amazing! You look like you stepped out from a Hans Holbein painting! I really enjoyed your video!
Thank you so much 😀
Absolutely breathtakingly beautiful. And that location is amazing!!
Excellent work done!
Just beautiful 😍👌🏻. Thank you for uploading this very detailed and highly informative video 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻.
To think that you started off, as unexperience, in 2005 with a "costume" where many modern "experienced" costume filmmakers end up 😐 . And you have now ended up, in 2020, with a 😍complete Tudor Dress👌🏻 that wouldn't be out of place in an exhibition in the V&A or Met. All I can say is BRAVO!!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Beautiful work!
Absolutely beautiful dress, and the hood suits you. It frames your face so well. I want to wear that entire get up and go walking in the crisp fall air! It somehow looks so cozy and comforting.
I’m glad I found your channel! Beautiful! Greetings from Portsmouth Va, neighbor 😊
Fabulous video, research and costume creation!
Very well done and informative! 👍🏻
This is one of the few historical dress videos I’ve seen that does early Tudor, so I love this! Also, I live in RVA! I never knew this place was here! Definitely want to visit now
Absolutely gorgeous, as a Tudor fanatic I was very excited to see this pop up
I don’t know what’s more stunning, the gown or the model! Just gorgeous!
