Hey NL, I want to thank you for getting me back into chess. In return I wanted to share something with you that I came across in a recent game. I have been learning the Vienna Gambit, IM Levy Rozman's signature opening. There is one line where if your opponent is both dumb enough to blunder the knight and galaxy brained enough to find Qh4+ then the best response according to the computer is to bongcloud to e3. I don't know if Levy would approve but if stockfish wants you to Bongcloud then I feel like your obligated. For your consideration Vienna Gambit accepted, Bongcloud variation: 1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. f4 exf4 4. e5 Nd5 5. Nxd5 Qh4+ 6. Ke2 f3+ 7. Ke3
@@Donna-kk5yo ennelle = NL = Northernlion = the egg = the guy you just watched get insanely lucky in chess = the guy who is still deathly afraid of endermen even after murdering several in cold blood (maybe this is why he is so scared, he thinks they're all out to get him)
NL your videos are so entertaining and I particularly love this chess series. It's so nice when I've had a hard day to listen to you walking through the strategy of what you're doing, it helps me understand the game better
Me when I watch other NL content in the morning: stumbles while eating breakfast and coffee Me when I watch NL play chess in the morning: elegantly sip my tea and clean my monocle, regularly muttering to myself "ah, yes, yes"
I love how NL will say "I will allow you to take my queen so that I can get an open file" proudly like he knows it's better for him, then will do the literal exact thing to the opponent, giving them the open file, while also maintaining this is the best possible outcome for himself lmao
Loved this. Definitely deserved the win on both games, time is part of it. It's fun to watch because you're a lot better than me, but not GM-50-moves-puzzled-ahead-now-I'm-lost better than me. Hope you keep the series going!
27:44 My thoughts exactly. That move wasn't a big deal cause he probably just premoved the take, but so many people play 10 minute and are still at 9 minutes in the endgame
@@AliKandirr That should pretty much be a given at this rating. If you’re playing the opening few moves off of problem solving and intuition instead of theory, you’re gonna struggle and create a time crunch for yourself.
"You wanna get weird? Let's get weird." has surpassed "Oh, no, my queen!" for popularity in my house with me and my 12-yo chess-playing son. Thanks, NL!
1:20 if they play Bd3 you just capture a pawn. Even if you play Nf6 and Nxf6+ exf6 Bxf5 happens, you have a Qa5+ -> Qxf5, although white is better I had so many games where I didn't capture that pawn after Bd3 that it literally hurts :D
Hey, you've been using they a lot more now and it's really appreciated. Thanks so much for making the effort to be better, it makes a big difference for me at least.
I like the pace you play at. I checked out GothamChess' channel and with his videos I have no idea what's going on at all, I feel like you need to be an experienced chess player to have any chance of following along. With your videos though that's not a problem, I understand what's happening and why.
@@Hsel-lc1wt I did check a couple, but I can't really follow it. Even in videos for beginners he'll just rapidly list a bunch of moves, like that's supposed to mean something. He doesn't explain the significance of the moves. Does he think that just saying what a move is makes the implications of that move obvious? Maybe it does and I'm just stupid, but when I get a list of 10 moves in 20 seconds all I see is "a bunch of pieces moved" and I have no idea what it all means. Or am I supposed to just memorize it and not bother with understanding? When watching NL I get it tough. I see him considering different alternatives at a specific point, and from seeing what they have in common I understand what he's trying to do. When he considers an alternative and rejects it I can see why it's bad, and that the move he played instead doesn't have the same flaw.
So the beginning of this video is a perfect example. That was the main line of the classical Caro-Kann. I don't know the full line, but I know it up to 4.Be5. That sequence for someone who plays a decent amount of the Caro-Kann like you shouldn't take 40 seconds. From your side it shouldn't take more than 10 because by now you know those are the right moves
3:00 If I were him, I probably would have sacrificed the Knight by taking on F7. King takes, and exposes the white King to checks, and makes it harder to maneuvre to safety.
Here's an idea. You take turns making moves with Dan. Co op chess. You make one move, Dan makes the next. Watching Dan undo all your hard work and miss obvious tactics will be quite amusing I think!!!
Obviously you're not allowed to tell him what to play, or hint at it. Maybe not even being in the same call? Idk. Could be good that way or could be worse. You edit Dan's reaction to your moves in the video and visa versa!
I'd love to have the courage to sacrifice a piece for 2 pawns But I'm a 1200 and I blunder pawns all the time so in my games that's basically losing a piece...
"We know knight b6 is gonna happen" "I constantly have to pay attention to what knight b6 might create" Meanwhile knight b6 would have won the exchange back for white for like 5 straight moves because it traps the rook (rook a2 would save the exchange for a move but would lose the whole rook instead because after bishop b8 the rook would have been well and truly trapped), the opponent doesn't play it and Northernlion doesn't prevent it at any point while he is commenting about how that move might be annoying. (preventing it could be achieved by rook c8 or the awkward king to e8)
who are these people talking about draws being unsportsmanlike? I feel like he defends offering a draw as not unsportsmanlike a lot, and I've never seen that argument.
would love to see a single video with a longer-form game ie 30 or 60 minutes maybe not eeeevery video cause these 10 minute games are poggy as h*ck but a one-off would be sick

NorthernLion strategy:
1) sac a piece for an attack
2) trade all your attacking pieces
3) be in lost position
4) ???
5) pull out a miracle win somehow

5) Pull a second queen out of your sleeve to deliver a checkmate.
