Farmall M Power Grader Retrieval

  • The Farmall M was a platform used by several manufacturers for adding a power grading system to a normal farm tractor. This particular one was a Meili Blumberg manufacturing design from New Holstein Wisconsin. The date of the machine is somewhere in the late 40's or so. I have yet to look at the serial number on the tractor or even look up information on the manufacturer of this particular grader. That will come soon enough, but now is the time to first get it back in operation to where it can move under its own power THEN concentration can be focused on the rest of the machine.
Considering the weight of a standard M fitted with a set of weights and fluid filled tires is roughly 6,000 pounds, I believe this one will top the scale at 10,000 pounds minimum. Of course that is just a guess.
Some of you viewers will remember the cliff hanger of a video about the old Belarus model 3045 on its way to be traded for a un-named but equally challenging item?? (LOL) Well it has morphed itself from a Russian born machine into a good old hunk of American iron....just like that !! An update on that: THIS one is a greater challenge.
This has sat from around '96 or '97 to now, so that's 25 or 26 years sitting in the woods and good old Mother Nature has NOT been kind to this old relic. There is no doubt that the magneto is needing work. As a matter of fact, it may get changed to a distributor and Petronix electronic ignition, a flamethrower coil as well as a 12 volt conversion. Also the fuel tank is nasty as the day is long which means the carburetor is going to be as bad as the tank. The worst thing though will be figuring out what to do with the rotted 20" front rim. But....that's what the internet is for isn't it..!! I've welded in patches on quite a number of rear rims, but I would just as soon just buy a replacement 20'' front.....that is IF one can be found.
No need to fret the small stuff because all that will fall into place in good time. It's all about solving problems in sequence. It's figuring out the sequence that can be a challenge sometimes.
The hydraulics will probably be the last thing to look at as long as the fluid stays mostly INSIDE the piping for a while. If not, we will address that as necessary. I do not have the luxury of time or space to strip a machine as large as this one for a 100% restoration. It needs to be put back into reliable service as quickly as possible because it has work to do, and so do I.
Some may remember a similar machine in my stable, the WC Allis Chalmers Speed Patrol. That one is a totally manual machine whereas this Farmall is totally hydraulicly operated. The Allis is a chore to operate as compared to this fancy new machine. When the mulboard is loaded with gravel during forward motion, the manually operated Allis requires monumental effort to rotate the hand wheels for adjustment of the product spread. The Farmall will require a simple pull or push on a hydraulic control valve.
I can hardly wait for the opportunity to get this rig ready to push rock....
To make it easier for new viewers to see the Speed Patrol, here is a playlist: • 40's Allis Chalmers Sp... Enjoy !!

Yeah, sometimes its a challenge to keep an eye on what's happening AND keep your hand in his line of sight. That big bucket is quick to block a signal, but usually he can see enough past the bucket to get at least one eye on whatever machine we are loading. Then an occasional glimpse at an actual hand signal gives enough input to not kill anyone. Most times anyway.... Thanks Reg for the comment !! I knew you'd like this one.

From Mark In KY. I have never actually laid my eyes upon a “FarmAll M Grader” but I do remember that Caterpillar had a pretty similar looking grader that I remember.
It was great that you had the same wheel on the donor FarmAll M tractor because getting your grader to roll was a major battle that you won.
Oh Yeah, I was really proud to see that you had a Square body Ford truck. I have two Ford square bodies which are 1985 & 1990 F150 pickup trucks; One 4 speed transmission and one E4OD automatic transmission. Both of my trucks have 300 inline 6 cylinder engines - Can you tell that I like the 300 engines. I am really looking forward to seeing your upcoming videos regarding the grader.
Thanks for all of your great videos.

Thanks Mark for such an awesome comment ! I really like my old '85. It was an uncle's farm truck and I bought it in '94 with 21xxx miles on it. It just turned 75xxx this year. Actual miles too because I always drove a company truck for work. This old gal has a 460 four speed and I installed the 8' flatbed during a rear end change after ripping the spyders out for the fourth time. I put the one ton dually in instead of making the repair to the 3/4 ton yet again. Also double stacked the rear leafs with longer U-bolts, put a gooseneck hitch in the bed and built a super-heavy 6'' channel iron reinforced bumper. I have a spare 85-6 F-250 with a 351 four speed too.
Those old in line 300's were hard to kill and beasts of torque. I have my dad's old '56 3/4 ton also but its got the 272 v-8 and 3 on the tree. The videos will be slow to come on the Farmall....winter in coming in fast and I have a pretty full plate already. But they will surely come sooner or later. Glad to see you enjoy the videos...they are fun to make too !!

My brother picked up a Galion 402 a few months back. It looks to powered by an H engine on top of an M rear-end. We didn’t initially know that the transmission has some issues, but it should restore up okay in a few years as time allows.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  3 роки тому

That's good to know about the Galion. I know the Farmall H as well as the M were used by several grader manufacturers as the base tractor. Essentially the H looked identical to this one, just a little smaller in size. Yeah Jonathan, there's always a hidden surprise inside these old tractors. But sometimes the surprise is that there's nothing wrong at all. I like those much better.

You know, I hadn't thought of that but that is a very logical thought. I haven't even checked the serial number yet so I'm just guessing that its a '46 or '47. I wonder if the Tractordata site will decode the X codes if there are some. Thanks Wesley for the thoughts.

I once took the transmission gears out of an I-6 that was the basis for a cherry-picker type crane and put them in an M. 1st gear was lower and 4th gear was higher than a standard M. It was more handy like that. I sold that tractor but it didnt go far so I'll get it back sometime.

X1 means gasoline engine not kerosene or distillate so I guess it's normal gearing too. There's no other way too tell externally. I had to pop the belt pulley plate to see if that i6 had different gears. Oh well it was worth a look. Standard 1st gear is 44 teeth.

Its a Meili Blumberg grader from New Holstein, Wisconsin mated with a mid 40's Farmall M. They put a lot of them on H's too. The Massey by my truck while loading the M was a 33. And the 44 where I parked the trailer at MY shop is a 44-4. I traded a Case VAC even for the 33 and then traded the 33 to my brother for something else years ago....it escapes me now what it was.
The 44 at my house is one of several that live there, two of which used to be my daily drivers before I got three old 30's back to work. They do 90% of what I need done and do it much more efficiently...fuel wise. But the 44 has always been my favorite tractor as noted by the '44' in my username.
