Why not electric engines?

Only 85-90 % of the route in India is electrified . To reach the other 10-15% section you need the diesel. After 100 % electrification we will keep some Diesel locomotive for backup incase of an electric blackout and some diesel locomotives will work as shunter locomotives in station, godown, ports etc. and some will get converted to electric 👍
