Operating system is a system software or set of programs that acts as an interface between computer hardware components and the user. The purpose of an operating system is to manage all resources and operations of computer system. In simple way we can say that operating system helps us to communicate with the computer system. It is not possible for the user to use any computer or mobile device without having an operating system. Many other software like Games, MS Office, Adobe reader, Photoshop, Internet Browsers, Media player are installed in the computer, which you can run only with the help of operating system. Operating System is the first program loaded in the computer, which runs all other software and programs. Without operating system computer is useless.
If we talk about the history of OS, then the First operating system was created by General Motors in 1956 to run a single IBM central computer. In the late 1960s, the first version of the Unix OS was developed. The first OS built by Microsoft was DOS. It was built in 1981.The present-day popular OS Windows first came to existence in 1985 when a GUI was created.
There are various types of operating system:- Batch operating system, Distributed Operating System, Network Operating system, Time Sharing Operating System, Real time Operating System, Multiprocessing os, Embedded operating system, multi programming operating system etc.
Real time operating system can be divided into two categories: Hard real time and soft real time operating system.
Windows, Android, IOS, MAC OS, Linux, Unix are the examples of some popular operating system.
