    Steel seems like such a rigid material so it is difficult to imagine that the atoms that it is made of, can be so easily moved around.

    Even possible with the nail along the earth's magnetic field and just hitting it a few times.

    I've definitely killed a magnet with heat
    But then I re-magnetized it.
    I am older so I can remember when RadioShack sold the erase your cassette tape magnet that was one thing to have
