  • A circuit walk from Rennex gap to Alpine view.
Spring 2023 #8 : Rennex gap - Ascent through forest to sub alpine areas - visit to Alpine view - Return via Little Diggers creek.
Distance : Not more than 5 km.
Walking conditions : Sub alpine meadow walking.
Notes : Not having been up in these areas much, I have a poke about for the sake of curiosity.
The original summit road, a stock route, came up through these parts, and being interested in the route taken, I keep an eye out for any signs of it. The older route was slightly different to the one used today. In 1897 Clement Wragge hauled all his equipment through here to Mt Kosciuszko using bullocks and wagons. In this video I follow one of the possible options of passage to the higher ridge line, the areas behind Alpine View.
The "piece of cut timber" indicated in the early part of the video has me curious as to its use. It appears to be cut, burnt, and has a piece of chequered matting attatched. It doesn't even look like wood from a snow gum. Perhaps it is a fencepost, or maybe part of a section of logs that are laid out to assist passage across a boggy section. This area has much history attached to it, making any visible evidence quite hard to place.
The final shot of this video is of a plant growing on the summit of Alpine view. I rarely see this plant in Kosciuszko NP, but is prolific further south, particularly at Mt Buffalo. The rounded leaves are quite distinctive.
The spelling of 'Rennex' is actually 'Rennix', if the NP signs are correct. I have known it as 'Rennex' from the George Peterson book, but will slowly change over.
