For sure! Use a single induction burner like at the cottage and the bbq. If you can set up a sink, you’d be golden, that’s the tough part.

Yes and possibly a microwave… if you had a big bucket you could use the hose to make a makeshift sink. And you could definitely do sandwiches, charcuterie style boards. Just put things in airtight containers. The fridge will definitely come in handy!

"it's just paint." Your mom is a wise woman. It can be really hard when I strive for perfection right out of the gate. Beginner mind is just fine. Play with it. It's just paint. ❤

My mum was also a painter, MaCenna, and one of her first rules she taught us, even as toddlers with crayons, was "there is no wrong way to paint!" I, like you, don't have the artist's painting gene, but I do enjoy it from time to time.
Also, consider that all your skills in building and crafting rely on measuring, making straight lines and maths. It does one good to just let that drop. I think you got it when you "got into a groove" When that happens to me it's like hours pass like minutes!

Watercolor artist here 🙋🏼‍♀️ 2 rules of thumb that would help you achieve your goal:
    1. Never use a color direct from the tube, always mix with a smidge of its complementary color (i.e. mix a green with a tiny bit of red and it’ll make it look more organic)
    2. Warm tones come forward, cool tones set back. Use warm greens for the foreground and cooler greens as the landscapes extends into the distance.

You could make up batches of soup and other things (chilli , ramen etc) and freeze them in portions. That way you you would still have many options for meals over the period you have no kitchen and all you need is to put it in your microwave, defrost and heat up. It would be healthy and save you a lot of money from eating out everyday. And your microwave can go in the garage or upstairs or anywhere in the short term.

Next time you're super frustrated with a water reactive under layer, you can spray it (please spray outside) with some workable fixative. That should seal the layer, and allow you to keep building on top of it with new layers without reactivating what's underneath. It's a super simple fix.

Create a kitchenette in your garage with your fridge and microwave so y'all can make meals at home. As for painting canvases, I never thought I could paint until I was invited to a paint & sip party. I got hooked! But everything I've painted was from following UA-cam tutorials. I would suggest Painting with Jane or Angela Anderson. They both make it very easy for beginners to learn how to paint.

When I had my floors done and couldn’t get into my kitchen, I got a cheap electric skillet at Walmart for $20 so I could cook some things. Between that and my toaster oven, I was able to get by. You could also get a hot plate for under $20. You could set up a little kitchen space on your patio or in your garage during the renovation.

    • @Lucinda_Jackson

Electric skillets are great! I used to even bake in mine after my oven broke. Another great appliance is an air fryer. They're just glorified convection ovens, no matter the shape. But you can buy one that's made to look like and function like a mini oven.

MaCenna, set up a temporary kitchen next to your new painting you painted. Fridge, table with coffee machine and microwave cups , plates and cutlery. Crates with snacks or whatever. It’s just there to help you out and not too out of your comfort zone. Even a two plate stove could help you make simple meals. Just an idea .
We did something like this as our kitchen needed a longer renovation plus eating out with our many family members and dietary restrictions, it was just more cost effective and sensible for us.

You may have already thought of this. I would make a makeshift kitchen in your living room on the wall where you are painting the landscape art. Plug your fridge there and put up tables there for coffee machine, microwave, toaster oven and etc. Use that entire wall as your kitchen. It's perfect because it is dead space right now. Bbq grill would be good for cooking too. Freeze meals ahead to microwave later.

Did i miss something? You did not build the cottage.. The cottage was already built and the contractor & subs "built" the addition. You did a lot of work no doubt, however, saying you "built a house" is so misleading. I am not taking away from the work that you did, but there is no reason to exaggerate. You can take pride in everything you accomplished without taking credit for other peoples hard work.

MaCenna we have remodeled a couple of kitchens. We were able to make most of our meals at home with the help of countertop appliances, such as a slow cooker insta pot and an induction burner. Your soup could have been made in a slow cooker. The money we saved and healthful meals was a real game changer for us.

I know you didn’t ask, but if you still want to be able to cook at home, I totally suggest buying a Blackstone. We got one for my in-laws right before they renovated their kitchen and dining area and it helped them minimize how often they had to eat takeaway. We have a larger one ourselves and my husband uses it to cook everything from pancakes to fried rice, carne asada to teriyaki salmon. ☺️

The way MaCenna is dressed like her painting. 🥰 You and your mama are so unbelievably cute! ❤❤❤
Also, as an artist I’m sitting here giving you tips in my head and then yelling at myself to leave you alone you’re doing great.
You went right into the deep end going so big but you nailed it. Fear is an artists enemy. Happy trees only! 😊

    *******If I were you -
I’d put your fridge in your back living space, maybe move you office space to an area of your bedroom then create a temporary small kitchen area in your living space- you won’t want to keep going to your garage for items.
This would be a good back up plan incase the renovation goes over the birth of baby!

I had to come on here after listening to you and your Mom. My Mom tried to teach me to crochet once. ONE TIME. She sounded a lot like your Mom guiding me through the steps. She finally said, "What is it you are doing with your HANDS??" Then she told me I am great with words so it's not important to know how to crochet. lol

I think the new art is looking great! A tonal wabi-sabi style art piece would also look so wonderful with your organic/traditional/French provincial style if you end up changing things or doing more art! I find it to blend really well with more traditional styles and look less modern than other abstract pieces.

Listening to your mom talk you through your painting reminds me of Bob Ross and that would be such a cute video idea! You both should paint the same thing at the same time while she talks you through it. And then when you’re more confident, another fun idea would be to paint the same thing, she explains it, but you don’t see what she’s doing.

Maybe you can freezer prep some soups and other things. Place in freezer bags and lay flat to take up less room and you guys can heat up in a microwave. You won’t feel like eating out all the time. Buy a small freezer from Costco and put in garage.

Great job, I love that you have the courage to jump into something that you are not comfortable doing and learn. Your mom is so sweet. She’s trying to convey to you what is instinctual for her. Blending things out and softening edges seems to be the trick that started helping things flow for you. What a blessing we have when our mothers are always there to help guide us and love us through tough things. My mom is 85 and in good health but started having memory problems a year ago. We just finally figured out with a MRI that she definitely had a small stroke that is making it harder to retrieve and transfer things from one side of her brain to the other. I thank God that it is not the beginning of dementia. I don’t know how I’m going to survive life without her someday.

  • @sarahbergeron.artist

I think the painting really came along by the end!
When painting a landscape it is 'atmospheric perspective' that gives depth. The farther away something is the lighter and less saturated it is, because you are viewing it through the earths atmosphere.
An easy example is a mountain range, but this applies to other landscapes as well. The closer mountains are darker and more saturated (and more detailed). As the mountains recede into the background they get lighter and lighter and less and less saturated, as well as hazy and blurry.
