    I appreciate the genuine effort to work out how a cyclist is to navigate through an intersection overlayed with 2-way cycle tracks and turn boxes. It demonstrates what a nightmarish deathtrap it is. I hope Victoria's trailblazing in this area gives other cities pause.

    I've been cycling for over 40 years, and I find these bike boxes terribly confusing... especially when I'm supposed to make u-turns in the bike lane. I really like this effort to make room for cyclists and include them as a normal part of road traffic, but I'm not convinced this is the best solution for how cyclists should handle an intersection.

    wouldn't it be easier to have cyclists use normal turn lanes and normal traffic lanes? Instead of all this "creative" in-place u-turns they have to do in this scenario? Seriously? At 3:33 did i see a cyclist turn into an opposing lane of traffic and then do an in-place u-turn. This is insane.

    I love how intuitive turning 90 degrees in the opposite direction, then turning 180 degrees in order to head where you want to go is. Victoria isn't filled with rocket scientists (trust me, I've looked). Victoria isn't filled with people likely to figure this out any time soon. It would have been easier to use all of Pandora for bikes going both ways, and make Johnson into a 2-way street. Tourists driving here are going to kill someone, if the locals don't beat them to it.

    Cyclists in this town have no idea what to do at Stops signs and now you expect them to use a "turn box" correctly? Could you make this system anymore convoluted? Let the head on's begin!

  • @jsallen1946
    @jsallen1946 7 років тому +6

    This is so convoluted and ridiculous it leaves me speechless. The chain of events:Construct a two-way one-side of the street bikeway, which makes proper intersection maneuvers impossible, then try to find a way around that problem and get a woman with a sweet, calm voice to explain this without breaking into tears or laughter. It appears that the problem which is supposed to be solved by this is that a bicyclist simply turning t into the bikeway would be crossing bikeway traffic which isn't stopped by the traffic signal that stops other traffic, but having to head away from the intended direction of travel, then make a U turn inside the narrow bikeway where other bicyclists may be waiting? Clearly an afterthought. A two-stage turn queuing box and a two-way one-side of the street bikeway are not the same thing and that is where this design gets ridiculous.

    So is it illegal to turn right from a bike lane through an intersection? This is the first time I have seen the practice of turning left and then turning around in the green box to set yourself up to go through an intersection. I don't have to drive downtown, normally.

  • @adweldon

    The fact that you need a four minute video to instruct people how to use this bike lane says it all... Complete waste of money.

      True, they should implement protected intersection by Dutch design instead. Proven to work and extremely safe to use.

    City of Victoria said skateboarders are pedestrians. If so why are they using a bikeway instead of the sidewalk? I'm not familiar with B.C.'s bike laws, but in California, peds can't use a bikeway if there's an adequate adjacent pedestrian facility. Just wondering; does B.C. not have a similar law?

  • @tqnohe

    Here's a better idea. If you absolutely must have "protected" bikeways, they should be one way on either side of the street in the same direction as traffic.
    These are unsafe around side streets and driveways.

    Before the cyclist does a u-turn in the bike lane, shouldn't they shoulder check for any other cyclists following them? This isn't shown.

    Very confusing. I'm glad I'm not a cyclist that has to use these bike boxes. The only thing I took away from this video is that, as a driver, I must not turn right on a red light where there is a bike box.

  • @tqnohe
    @tqnohe 7 років тому +2

    I had to check the date of this video to see if it was an April Fool joke.
    Are they serious about this? Go into the lane then make a U-turn to proceed in you intended direction???
    Who makes this shit up?

  • @bryanlane679
    @bryanlane679 7 років тому +6

    still don't understand why you need a light to turn right. I don't see how this requires changes to traffic patterns for cars at all. You always have to stop at a red light, you always have to check for oncoming vehicles (and pedestrians and cyclists) before turning right, and you have to check your mirrors/blind spot before you turn right because of cyclists on the shoulder/unprotected bike lane/sidewalk (lol). If you're already doing this, this protected bike lane business isn't interfering with your turn at all. The extraneous light is just a confusing pain in the ass.

  • @larryearnhart4713
    @larryearnhart4713 7 років тому +5

    Seriously??? Have the producers actually ridden bikes before? This is counter-intuitive to actually riding a bike - you actually have to turn directly into oncoming traffic. How utterly moronic and a waste of my taxpayer money. Nobody is going to follow these instructions and the "confident" riders are certainly not going to bother with the silly nudging through traffic as depicted.

    Or you can throw away this mess and copy a protected insersection design by the Dutch. Tried and tested to work instead of this attempt to be smart and reinvent the wheel. Just copy your homework for once, no shame in that if it saves lives.

  • @patrick7481

    (Open letter to Victoria :) Half the cyclists riding the wrong way (left side of road) other half riding correctly, what could go wrong ?) Everything. How about a four lane arterial, car drivers in curb lane going correctly but those in middle lanes going wrong, opposite directions. Another way to complicate, increase accidents.
    I know it's better for all cyclists to be on the right side of the road, but I'm not a noncyclist who wants to keep cyclists out of traffic lanes. without seeing how that disrupts traffic. And know real cyclists will make left turns like motorcyclists and car drivers, by moving into the left lane, signaling and turning.
    If you think motorcyclists would turn like car drivers, did it occur to you that e-bikes (motor-cycles) would also do that? And some cyclists on the right side, some on wrong side, some like drivers, further complicates a complicated mess?

  • @Patrick94GSR
    @Patrick94GSR 7 років тому +3

    Also this "U-turn" turning nonsense pretty much alienates anyone riding anything other than a conventional bicycle. What about long-tail cargo bikes? What about recumbent bicycles and trikes? What about tandem (or longer) bicycles? What about "bakfiets" style 2 and 3-wheel box bikes? What about heavy e-assist bicycles? What about bicycles pulling trailers? With all of those, a U-turn is very difficult if not impossible in facilities like this.
    I sure hope Victoria doesn't penalize cyclists who choose not to use this green junk.

    • @dlo111
      @dlo111 2 роки тому

  • @gbshaun
    @gbshaun 7 років тому +1

    Or cyclists could simply act as any other motor vehicle does, and move through junctions just as any other vehicle. No u turns, no head-on separated bike paths, no magnified risk at the junctions, no videos necessary, no test at the end.
    An overly complex and likely ineffective solution for an imaginary problem. Well done !

    This is the dumbest "facility" crap I've ever seen. It's also NOT how bike boxes were intended to be used. It's a great illustration of one reason why 2-way cycle tracks on one side of the street are a really bad idea - getting into and out of them safely is really counter-intuitive and NOT safe at all. I try to avoid facilities like this like the plague. Bicyclists Belong In The Traffic Lane! Bikes May Use Full Lane, Change Lanes To Pass!

    • @timmy55825
      @timmy55825 7 років тому +4

      Hey Pat, cyclists pay for the road ways just like motorists- through property taxes. Even if you rent, you are contributing indirectly. Most cyclists also own/drive cars as well. I think the real issue is bad riders, and drivers. But, most are just trying to commute wether on a bike, or in a car.

    • @davekoch1224
      @davekoch1224 7 років тому +8

      How about a carbon tax for car owners? Also, are you under the impression that cycling incurs more hospital visits than driving a motor vehicle?
      Motorized vehicles have a much greater indirect impact than bikes do, I think that's pretty obvious. Why aren't car owners taxed extra for that?
      My guess is most people that are against this type of thing aren't cyclists, and are probably the same drivers who are frustrated by being stuck behind a cyclist on the road. This is a solution for that, one that has been extremely successful in Europe (see Denmark, Netherlands). If this enables more people to feel comfortable cycling to work, then it will mean less drivers on the road, less pollution, less impact to our infrastructure, which ultimately is less cost to the tax payer. Cyclist or not, we should all be supportive of this.

    • @tqnohe
      @tqnohe 7 років тому +1

      They don't do this in Denmark. This is foolishness. Make a right turn the execute a U turn to make a left turn? Who would do that? And two way cycleways have been deemed unsafe by Euros.
      What is wrong a lane down each side of the road with traffic? Then simply follow the established rules of the road.
      The ones who oppose this are indeed cyclists. I cannot imagine any cyclist at any level of experience who would find this a safer way to turn.

  • @foffe7618
