  • THE SAGA CONTINUES . . .
When I first hiked the JMT there wasn't particularly good information on hiking the JMT at a faster pace. This led me to plan and carry food for 16 days when I actually finished the trail in about 10 days.
This video continues the series by discussing resupply options, challenges, relevant camping options, tips and tricks, and perhaps the most under appreciated constraint: battery charging time. All of this is from the perspective of a 10-12 day JMT
Enjoy, like and subscribe, and ill see you out there on the trail!

I’m planning to do jmt in 16 days, but nobo and leaving from cottonwood pass. Do you have recommendations?

Maybe not your first thought, but acclimate as much as you can in advance. It will really go a long way to help you with the extra stresses altitude can create. Aim for a night at 5000, a night at 7-8000, and a night at 9000 if possible, since you’re going to be at 10k on day one.
As for food- depends on your food volume situation and stamina. If you don’t have room in your bear can, you have a choice. There are periodic bear boxes along the trail (check SEKI for latest info), and you can use them to store overflow from your bear can (but NOT TO CACHE RESUPPLIES). If you think it will be enough weight that it will be the extra day of hiking, you can resupply at onion valley/kearsarge. More expensive but convenient, the JMT FB group also has a file where you can see if it will be practical to “rideshare” a mule packing resupply. It depends on whether your timing lines up with anyone else. Last but not least, you can give your niece/nephew/cousin/whatever $100 to day-hike your resupply up to Kearsarge pass, but just make sure they’re strong enough to actually do it.
Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

Jim, did you mail your charging plug in with your food resupply kit, or did you carry the plug with you the whole time?

I’ve carried it both times. This was mostly to keep my logistics simple, but it also meant that I would still be able to charge my phone if I had to leave trail early. My pack is very light so I could spare the 4 oz.

Lixada Paper-size (smallest one) solar-panel works great. Sew loops near top of pack to hang it. Velcro battery bank to the back of the Lixada and there'll be plenty of power. I went 35-days (in desert) without using wall-charger at all (iPhone, Guthooks, Audible full-time, Headlamp, but not much video). Lixada is 2.5oz, thus saving 7oz of big-battery. Using Nitecore 10k battery bank. Aukey's lightest 44g, 20W, flip-out prongs USB-c, carried, but rarely used.

Solar panels can work in very specific situations, but I can’t suggest them generally.

@@JimBridgerHarney - Seen a hundred people cry about them for every one-person that thinks it through and assembles properly. Do as I say and yours will serve you well too. Used it on Benton MacKaye (woods) and electronics remained topped-off for days. It's not waterproof, so stow-it in a ziplock in rain. The sole reason solar doesn't work well for so many is user-error, nothing more.
