This would be my favourite metal album of all time, although ...And Justice For All beats it out by just a fraction for me (I just fucking adore the guitar tone on that record). Seriously one of the best albums ever recorded though.

I still think Arise is Sepultura's crowning achievement. The songwriting, musicianship and production were just firing on all cylinders. And it brought fans of thrash and death metal together. Just a timeless album.
They also brought fans of punk rock into the mix. (see "Holiday in Cambodia" a Dead Kennedys cover song.)

Morrisound studios, they made bands better, which is where Arise was recorded. Some of the best metal albums came out that studio.
@@BearJew72 definitely. A nice thing about a lot of death and thrash bands is that they acknowledged their punk and hardcore influences even though punk and hardcore musicians might have been a bit more reluctant to say the same.

When I was about 18 yrs old (1992), after years of being in to really underground hardcore thrash, it dawned on me one day that metal/thrash had been done. There was no new ground. All had been done. The fucking party was over. I got in to Enya and Seal (I still adore them both by the way, I make no apolagies). Then I heard this album! It made me realise that no matter how much a style of music has been battered to death, somebody, somewhere, can make it sound new and fresh. I got in to Metal once again!
That's quite a transition from Sepultura to Enya!. Good to have a wide variety of musical interests.

My favorite song by Sepultura. The band’s performances on this album still remain their best in my opinion. I have loved every album I’ve heard by them though.
Damn........Igor's drumming at the 4:00 part is incredibly fast, his hands become a blur. Sepultura are martyr's of metal, one of the best there ever was and ever will be! Some of the catchiest and recognizable metal riffs, rythms, transitions and beats played so flawlessly clear even back in the days of digital recordings
I love how Andreas has Red Hot Chili Peppers and Corrosion of Conformity stickers on his guitar and is wearing a Faith No More shirt. He has great taste!

Does anyone ever get so overcome with the sincere intensity of Sepulturas music that it brings tears to your eyes. I listen to a lot of metal for a long long time and sepultura brings out this anger frustrated part of me that is powerless to the grand whole of existence, and society’s cycles of hate and killing of each other that goes back to the beginning of civilization.It’s so genuine and raw it resonates with me to my primal core! I just feel like fuck it, I give up, pass me a gun I’m going to self sacrifice for man’s endless war.

"Arise" is a really good album but '' Beneath the Remains'' is a monster. The album came out in early 1989 and I was 16 at the time. I heard it towards the end of the same year and throughout 1990 I just listened to it. An album that changed the whole Metal scene. "Arise" confirmed the status that Sepultura had at that time. "Chaos AD" is different, slower, the band somehow felt tired, even though the songs were still top notch. I didn't listen to the other albums with Max because Max had changed, it was obvious that something was happening in the band. I started listening to Sepultura again when Max left and I listen to them today ...

I think Derrick is a great singer, but Max was just perfect for Sepultura... and he was one of the founding members along with Igor. I wish they could just talk to each other or just do a cash-grabbing reunion tour like Guns N' Roses.
Agree Mike, they were gonna call the Derrick Green version Tribus instead of Sepultura, and they should have done that but changed their mind.
Max and Igor don't really need the money. I wish they'd come back and put the band back togather. Still my go to band if I wanna hear some scare the neighbors in the hood music. I don't think we'll see Max and Igor jump at the chance. Every interview I see with them they seem content on doing what they are doing now. Sucks but true. They ain't guns and roses they don't want the money or headach I'm sure.
I would say I listen to newer Sepultura more than old only because I played the shit out of these albums over 20 years ago.
What I think people fail to realize though that if Max had stayed in the band than they wouldn't have been happy with the direction Max would have taken the band. The direction on Roots was something Max and Andreas fought over. According to Gloria on her blog Andreas didn't feel the direction on Roots was the music Sepultura makes. I much prefer the direction Andreas took Sepultura in than the direction Max took Soulfly in. I enjoyed Soulfly years ago, but those albums became dated and Max writes disposable metal now that you're bored of in 2 months. Andreas brought sophistication to the band with his guitar playing and song writing.
