Why Prince Albert Lost The Trust Of The Public | Royal Upstairs Downstairs

  • Antiques expert Tim Wonnacott and chef Rosemary Shrager visit Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire, where a 24-year-old Queen Victoria stayed in 1843.
Victoria had been married for nearly four years but although she adored her husband Albert, neither the public nor the upper classes liked him much. So the spin doctors of the day arranged for him to ride with the famous Belvoir hunt to help boost his image. The day’s sport climaxed with a huge feast boasting a special Hunter’s Beef dish as its centrepiece, which food historian Ivan Day re-creates here.

+Cats Chorus. Albert discreetly took care of the official business, so that Victoria could devote herself to their family. Small wonder she missed him so desperately, when he passed away.

@@ClipgathererActually, I’ve never read anywhere that Victoria devoted herself to her family when they were babies, or children when Albert was around.. Actually, thinking on I’m not sure what she did. She didn’t even LIKE even her (any) babies until they were 6 months old. And even after that.🤔

For one thing he thought the English were beneath the Germans. Another thing he'd thought or was made to believe that Victoria would be able to make Parliament agree to give him the title of King so they'd be equal. He hated the fact that he had to bow to his wife and walk behind her at public functions. He also felt disrespected by her advisors and the Prime Minister. That's why there are so many memorials to him in Britain today. When he died she kept honoring him with so many statues & named a lot of buildings in his honor so the British would never forget what a great man he was and what he had done for the English. But it wasn't just honorary. Prince Albert was very smart and very progressive and he adored his children. The British do owe him a lot!

Places and objects named after Albert range from Lake Albert in Africa, to the city of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, to the Albert Medal presented by the Royal Society of Arts.
Four regiments of the British Army were named after him: 11th (Prince Albert's Own) Hussars; Prince Albert's Light Infantry; Prince Albert's Own Leicestershire Regiment of Yeomanry Cavalry; and The Prince Consort's Own Rifle Brigade.
He and Queen Victoria showed a keen interest in the establishment and development of Aldershot in Hampshire as a garrison town in the 1850s.
They had a wooden Royal Pavilion built there in which they would often stay when attending military reviews.
Albert established and endowed the Prince Consort's Library at Aldershot, which still exists today.

If there was ever a candidate for effective birth control it was Queen Victoria. She and Albert apparently couldn't keep their hands off each other but she resented like hell having so many children. From what I've read Albert seemed to enjoy his children but I don't think Victoria felt the same way, especially the oldest one Edward. And the feeling was mutual. She accused him of actually killing Albert. Having your mother say that to you has to be awful. Albert died of typhoid fever, which could have been from the bad drainage at Windsor castle or just about anywhere else.

It's very possible that Victoria suffered from fairly severe Post Natal Depression after her deliveries and, let's face it, being pretty much constantly pregnant for so many years couldn't really be very enjoyable for her. As for how babies look as newborns, I agree with many people of my own generation that all babies look like Winston Churchill.

Albert and Victoria really were the true, real life fairytale couple. Even before the glorification of character that often comes after someone's died, she was already writing about him as if he were the light and center of her life. She stood by him when no one else did and in turn he knew just how to make her happy.

queen victoria s life time biography or her real life stories just tells that she was just not a normal queen , she was queen who ruled and lived like a king. it is actually been observed that this way she lived i mean like a king before and after she became a widow of windsor. Her life at widow hood was depressing for her but yet she came back to normal were secretly she enjoyed her life , which i think women in 19 century may not be able to do especially when they were widow .

@Kandy Kandy lol your writing in all capitals to write delusional bull💩. Did the monarchy pass along the male line or the female line? Did gender play a role in who could inherit the crown? Didn’t Henry the 8th take Mary out of the line of succession because he feared that his family would loose the throne like previous dynasties that went extinct because they lacked a legitimate male heir? Didn’t Elizabeth 1st use the fact she was a woman to form alliances? Clearly those English skills haven’t helped inform your opinion of history if you couldn’t deduce the differences in gender from ANY simple GCSE text. Ps my first comment was sarcasm. There’s no list of executed kings but there is a list of executed queens even a child could tell you that.

19th century citizen's having a hatred for Albert made no sense whatsoever considering the fact Victoria, her mother and uncle all were German!! So, what's the difference? Was it the fact he was born on foreign soil and people feared disloyalty? That wouldn't make sense either. Wasn't Victoria born in Germany or was she born at Kensington? Please refresh my memory here. Not from England..... No haters, please.
Remember it was Albert who lost the most by leaving his homeland to take up and marry outside his homeland. In addition he was prevented by Parliament from being styled as 'king' alongside Victoria. The best he got from Parliament was consort status to the Queen.
OFF-TOPIC Q: In another video a historian read from a written account of Albert on his deathbed. Apparently, he seemed eager, reconciled and resigned to die. What I can't understand is, WHY? Why would he be sooo eager to die so young and with such a large family to leave behind? It would seem to me that given all his accomplishments he would want TO live.....to live a full life. I'm sure it was not for want or lack of love. Victoria loved him immensely. Any ideas why?

He was disliked because he was viewed as a foreigner (he was German) and he came from a lower royal house. Him being viewed as a foreigner isn’t fair because the British royal family at the time, the Hanovers, were German. After the death of Queen Anne, the closest Protestant royals who could inherit the British throne were the Hanovers. Victoria and Albert where first cousins. After the self indulgent nature of the Hanovers, Albert did a lot to better the public image and reputation of the royal family.
Victoria after each pregnancy relegated a lot of her power and support to Albert to the point he was all but King in name (cabinet would never allow Albert to be declared a king, but he was eventually named Prince Consort). He was a visionary that often got criticized for this views. While Albert did a lot of great things, he did gain too much power for his own good and his eventual death in 1861 was probably for the best. (Sorry Victoria!) While Victoria had Albert had a very passionate and loving marriage, he toned down a lot of Victoria’s personality and assumed more of her power. Though his death caused Victoria to be in mourning the rest of her life, she is remembered as a great ruler. Had he lived, I am unsure how the current royal family would be.

Some of it also had to do with Princess Charlotte’s widower, Prince Leopold who was paid a very large pension after her death. Britain’s resented that and didn’t want a repeat. As we know, they didn’t have to worry as Victoria well outlived Albert.

    • @skontheroad

However, these were working estates and they employed much of the entire county. With the lavish lifestyles of these Dukes and Earls, all those who were in their employ back then, would not have had work otherwise. And it went on that way until WW1, which took the lives of millions of young men, from the most wealthy to the most poor--they all fought for their nation. But many didn't come back home, altering the way the classes interacted thereafter. And not always for the better!

I don’t think he was power hungry. It is all about men’s attitudes toward women, he wanted to be the man in the marriage. He also wanted something to do with his life that was meaningful to him and would benefit the country. He was a citizen of England, so being the husband of the Queen he felt a need to do for England and the people. What has Phillip done for the country?
