- After resolving a dragging anchor and some dead batteries I brave the polar bears to hike around svalbard. Then we sail back across the Norwegian sea to Tromsø and tour Ed’s Oyster 48.

Ed has a nice boat. I'm glad he gave us the tour because it's very educational.
Thank you! My son will be full time sailing soon, and I really enjoy watching your videos so I can see the possibilities he has waiting for him!❤️
Thank you for this story.Oyster owner sounds very frendly
Glad to see you didn’t have to rastle a polar bear Sam, I was a bit concerned when you showed the tracks, those things can smell a pickled herring from miles away
I couldn't believe he didn't have a rifle just in case.
@@kensherlock6475 or flares, signal guns. This should be aboard any sailboat like that. But sadly, a lot of people go up there, ignorant, and polar bears are shoot dead because of stuoid and arogant behavior.

Its a legal requirement there and the last person killed by a bear it was not far from that site.
If you shoot a Bear you are in legal trouble because its assumed that you failed to deter the beast...and get out of its way but its probably less paperwork than if you get eaten through not being prepared or paying attention to the fact you are not the natural apex predator.
Another great Sam Holmes Sailing update. Thanks for the tour of "Lia" it sure is a beautiful boat with lots of cool features especially those customized by the previous owner as well as Ed. Thanks for sharing!
Great vid, Sam. It's been encouraging to see your skill and experience mature. Thanks for taking us along with your journey.
This is absolutely outstanding content and an adventurous journey we can get transferred into thanks to your creativity and sharing. Love it and it's so amazing how inspirational it is and pushes not only me but as well others to make something out of our lives. A big thank you again and wishing you a safe journey.
I like the mid cockpit. I suppose it will make for a better comfortabel ride whenever the boat is pitching up and down. In that case being close to the middle of the boat guarantees the best comfort.
Thank you for taking us on your adventures
Great to see 'Lia' in action, beautiful boat and currently in her winter mooring a mere 50' from my own wee yacht.
Great to see you on an Irish boat Sam.
Sam is taking it all in and wiser for it.
Thank you, Sam. What a trip!
How about the large buggy pulled by a team of doggos? Wild. Seeing the Buckminster Fuller style pods around each tech device is a singular chance in a lifetime to learn what's there, even on a video. Especially best on one as authentic as yours. Great of you to persevere. Ed is a fantastic Captain of his vessel. Will pop over to see Part 2 of Tour.
Some years ago, two girls meet a polar bear while hiking on Platåfjellet (same platou you are hiking). They did not have any weapons, and 22 year old Jeanette Olaussen got killed while her friend managed to escape back to Longyearbyen.
You don’t have to outrun the bear. Only your friends 😉
@@samholmessailing That was not funny Sam!
@@thenorseman2804 This is a famous saying/proverb from a time when people needed a sense of humour in dealing with harsh conditions and danger. It is a truism on human nature.
Sam, I was recently on the island Styrso in Gothenburg for vacation. We landed and the pilots went on strike the next day. It was a real mess with trying to get back home. I hope things went smoothly for you. Thanks for the video.
Studying for my ASA101. I'm hoping to enjoy similar to what you're doing within the next 4-5 years. I love watching your adventures.
that was a very daring hike
Im not gonna lie, that auto main sail is awesome
Its so convenient!
@@samholmessailing what if the motor breaks or the thing gets jammed?!! Is there a reliable manual override?
@@volvotango8363 i think so
I cant wait to see you back on your boat hitting the water. be safeout there
It’s a joy to see when someone is living their dream of sailing the world. I don’t know if you remember me but I believe we met, I was with my then girlfriend who is now my wife . I can’t remember exactly where or be 100 percent sure it was you but in florida I believe it was Saint Johns or Volusia county I had mistaken you for one of our friends because you are the spitting image of him. Perhaps you remember a local sailer as well Joshua Dobbs . If it’s wasn’t you then I apologize but still so great to see your videos and wish you the best .
Brilllllliant Sam - thanks for sharing 👍
love your channel dude I just turned 32 and bought myself fallout 4 because my baby momma wont let me buy a sailboat lol
Thanx Sailor Sam!
This is too cool. I living through you right now. Thanks for sharing !
Hey Sam I have a Cape Dory 27 planning to cruise the Caribbean. What's your anchor / chain / rode set up, curious. thanks.
I can only imagine how deprived of night time you must feel. You seem anxious to get back to your solo trips! great stuff man!
Wow! An Oyster
Thanks!
Enjoy watching you videos.
Dead band adjustment would be my guess for the autopilot.
You really dont wanna run into a polarbear without a rifle lol

You're so blessed.
Calm Ocean.
Scenic Eclipse was indeed the ideal name for that sight-blocking behemoth LOL🤣
But yeah, no bueno up there in the polar bears home/domain without protection. Super glad you didn’t encounter any, for the bear’s sake also🙏🏼
Very good video!
I enjoy watching your videos but do have to say that, from watching another UA-camr who lives in Svalbard, roaming the area without a rifle is not wise. You were fortunate. It's one thing to be a risk-taker but do suggest being respectful of laws and be mindful of your risks.
That hike had me sweating
Went straight past my house in tromsø
Kåseberga in the end, right?
What a life. If I could sketch you could be a farside cartoon. Go to the north pole and get a ticket, walk for miles no polar bears, go to an igloo community to find out its a super secure world power instalation. Don't stop, thank you
Subscribed. Looks fun. 🤩
It's more like you hope a polar bear doesn't see you.
Thanks
Hey Sam, where's Pickled Herring? I cant swim, and as such am not comfortable doing what you do, so I live vicariously through your UA-cam channel when I can! Cheers!
Enrout from kåseberga to Västervik now share.garmin.com/SamHolmes
Glad you made it back safely. You have been very fortunate so far relying on the kindness of strangers but for goodness sake Sam, do some research before you enter a new country (re: Polar bears and rifles). Local and national customs and laws are not always like the USA. The further you travel the more this is true.
You're welcome to the Swedish arcipelago 😃 Especially the Stockholm arcipelago 👍
Many people don't realize that every sailboat will leak in some conditions. If you want a boat that never leaked, you need to buy a new one. And you will soon realize that too will leak.
Very true
How did you get all those batteries recharged? The solar panels?
Loving all the great info...but seriously getting Hitchcock vibes from the birds in the background. lol... Thanks Sam! Seriously though, keep it up. Love your diverse vids.
Cold, wet, no sleep, mix in a bit of terror (polar bears?!?)... ah, the sailin' life!
Tension seamed tangible
Loves these videos. A dream of mine to accomplish someday
Sam, come to Karlskrona 😊
Sam, Keep up the good work to take us places far far away. Like these adventures!! Keep it up Sam!! #Davidofthedesert
769th like posted at 3:22 of this 7,513th view - "Harvesting sea spinach" would be a proper caption. Salty salad, anyone?
Hi how do you call this cool mast with electric Sail?
The Polar Bear is one of the few animals that will stalk and kill humans.
Nice 👍
Sam do you use AIS? Would like to track the Herring on Marine Traffic.
No
Don't think Sam did any research on Polar bears! Electric stove/bbq gets around the propane problem, otherwise you have to rig together some valves and refil one from the other which is sketchy at best.
Electric runs into issues quickly with arctic sailing.
@@jonnenne such as?
480p? Jeez... what is this the 90s?
What part of Cork is your friend from Sam?
I'm from Cobh - the best part 😉
Your videos look like you shot them with a 1997 cell phone. Lol Time to level up the quality.
I am switching into "father" mode. The part with the polar bear print and you walking alone unarmed is absolutely irresponsible! You would not swim in open ocean without a safety rope, right?. Be smart and wise. "FATHER mode off." Love the rest of the show.
Agreed... Pretty dumb
✌️
Polar bear: No gun permit? Hmm, sounds like a free lunch!
Sam: well I found a PVC pipe and a potato, and luckily had my hairspray with me for propellant and 💥 BOOM!
Polar bear: you've got to be kidding me! I'm out of here.
Does he live on his boat the whole time?
Yes for months at a time he'll take the boat out of the water in late fall.
How r u?.Likke-how excellent channel,=))
Wow that's crazy to wake up with the Pickle adrift! Glad those folks helped you out. Polar bears are no joke. Watch out.
Sam is on his friend Ed's Oyster 48 named "Lia" with whom he and some other sailed from Norway to Svalbard.
Polar bears hunt people. They are the only species that will actively track and kill people for food. Not something to be trifled with, or to assume you won't run into one.
Called HARRP 🤣
What a beautiful lady
🇿🇦👍🏻
Sorry to be critical but the sound quality during your conversation is initially poor, it gets better but it was difficult to follow.
Yeah we were to far from the camera and the birds were noisy
The volume is too low. I had Bluetooth buds in and it was impossible to hear you. Then on laptop speaker it was way too low.
Weird, I heard it fine on Bluetooth earbuds and on my phone speaker, and I often have trouble hearing 🤷♂️
@@Drinksfromtap Weird. I never complain on Sam's channel, but I just could not hear it. It might be an issue with my phone.
I have lived in Longyearbyen, and strolling around like that with no flares or anything is very ignorant. Just up where you were, two women were attacked by a polar bear. They were also just having a walk in the park with no guns or flares. One of them jumped off the cliffs, the other was killed by the polar bear. And so the polar bear was shoot dead. Try to understand and respect the wild nature. We are just guests there. It's not Disney land.
Ignorante means not knowing, your cool...blessings...m
Don't forget me Portsmouth to Stockholm pick me up to meet Greta thunberg Sam👍🙂
Sam, I always enjoy your videos except I frequently can not hear what is being said. Paul
You need a lead in to tell the viewers your name and quick background of your channel for new potential subscribers.
Its the same as my channel name. Sam Holmes 😀 crossing oceans in questionable sailing vessels
@@samholmessailing Be a little more descreptive. Who, What, Where, When & Why. You have great content!
Stop hiking without your paraglider!
From now on paraglider and a rifle at all times.
How come the solar panels couldn't keep the batteries up? Go home to your own boat.
The because one of the batteries were dead.
@@samholmessailing interesting, so having one dead battery in a parallel battery connection will stop all the other batteries charging?
Your audio sucks in the Norwegian videos. It sounds like you are rambling.
