  • Follow this easy step by step video and create your own percussion instrument. I have done this with middle school students and adults of all ages. Each one is a work of art! A SHEKERE is a West African instrument that has many different names but called shekere in Nigeria, axatse in Ghana, djabara in Guinea. I did not remove the inside seeds when making these instruments. Music "Little Shekere" by Sweet Honey and the Rock, and "Akoi Woni Gari" by Baba Ken Okelolo & the Nigerian Brothers. What is the name this song , I really think I remember singing it in Elementary music class. Also my daughter and I had so much fun making our own Shakere from our birdhouse gourds !!

A shekere and axatse are essentially the same thing. The slight difference is that axatse have a whole on the bottom, and are played using the knees along with the hands, and the shekere is just played with the hands, and has a whole on the top ,near the stem. Since this has no whole and has no example of it being played, it can be either.
