I've heard some people say to put a dab of silicone sealant on the bolts. I'm just wondering if you have ever done that? I'm installing an ultra-bell and I really don't want it to leak. Any thoughts on that?
The Ultra Bell uses individual o-rings to seal to the outer face of the pump which can be a challenge. I’ve seen some people recommend adding a second pump gasket between the Ultra Bell and pump, seems a lot easier. I don’t think I’d put RTV on the bolt threads; I wouldn’t want to chance hydraulic cracking the boss in the aluminum case. Instead use the soft copper washers under the bolt heads. If you wanted you can certainly put RTV under the bolt/head/washer. JD
Just completed this same job on my TH400, thank you for the info, helped a lot. I have one question: Should you be able to turn the outer shaft as well? The one that you grip hold of to lift the pump out. Also it looks like it takes quite a effort to turn the input shaft, should it be quite stiff to turn?
A lot of times it’ll turn only one way and be hard to turn. I don’t know for sure which ones and which direction from memory. The parking pawl is the only thing I know of that can stop the internals from turning at all. I was always told the sprag assembly shouldn’t squeal when turned but almost all of them do new or used? JD
