I have been avoiding adding figures, but I think I’ll practice in a small sketchbook what you just shared with us and then take that leap to add to my paintings. Thank you again Malcolm!
Beats the heck out of carrot figures and/or overly-complicated methods. I learned more about figure painting from your demonstration than I have in the last year. Thank you sooo much!
What a find I just found on UA-cam I’m so happy! I’ve been playing around with painting lately and so I’m a 100% novice. I’m so thankful for artists like you that offer free lessons. They are specific and to the point and actually I like that. I’m trying to get a feel for how much I want to get into it and so it isn’t practical to spend all that money just yet for online courses. I really appreciate what you offer thank you! I’ve already watched 2 videos and know I’ll be checking others out. I’ve already subscribed! Thanks again!
I put figures in my paintings occasionally. Sometimes they turn out great. Other times they look stiff and awkward. I need to practice for consistency and he gave some tips that might help. Thanks!
Another wonderful video Malcolm, thank you! You really simplify everything and get right to the point. I stumbled upon this video as I am about to add figures into an oil painting that is 90% done and was worried about ruining it. I’m going to do a few practice sketches in oil in my sketchbook first trying out your tips before touching the painting. Thanks again!
What a fantastic idea: the proportionate reference points! But how does one acomplish the same thing without a reference photo to begin with? I suppose I should just look through magazines until I find a figure in the position I need and proceed as in this video demo. Any other ideas? Thank you for the wonderful info. Caro.
Thank you, Malcolm. The other idea I have is to have people pose in a certain... well -- pose or movement, when needed for an idea for a painting. Does that make sense?

Good plan, enjoy it.
That whole square around the figure lesson, just elevated my creative life. How do you not have 1M subs? Oh, but you will.
😄 thank you, I'm happy to help

The more you practice this way the easier it will be to draw reference points from life. Then you can focus more on gesture as your confidence grows.
