This demo shows the different sprite management capabilities, VRAM flexibility, DMA transfers, and pixel limits supported by both consoles. Hence the difference between 3 enemies and 1 player on the SNES versus up to 9 enemies and 2 players on the MD version. Beat em ups are a genre that is more suited to the capabilities of the MD. Thanks for the gameplay, very entertaining and educational.
Regardless of the capabilities of one machine or another, the comparison is not fair, you are comparing a game programmed more than 30 years ago with the memory restrictions that existed in the past due to the cost of the game to today when such restrictions do not exist. Let's be fair and not just get carried away by fanaticism.
One would also argue that it's the skill of the dev(s) when workin on consoles. If one knows the console/engine inside out and even know work arounds, one can perform miracles on it. The fanatics of havin to compare consoles these days is silly as shit as these days, these consoles are understood far better than when they were released.
@@dava658It's not about programming or the fact that there is a difference between 30-year versions. The capabilities of a console and its limitations are something tangible from the moment they are first created. Memory restrictions are only affected by the price and size of the ROMs, I'm not arguing about that here. The rest of the restrictions are based on the capabilities of the consoles. Batman Returns on SNES uses 128 sprites to show 3 enemies and 1 player. While MD has the use of more different sizes of sprites simultaneously and despite its maximum being 80, it can draw what this demo shows: 9 enemies and 2 players. The VRAM also doesn't change over time, although both have 64KBs for graphic data, SNES limits it to 2 banks of 8KBs as maximum for sprites, so it's not going to show more than 512 different sprite-based tiles on screen per frame (MD has no limitation in this area). And MD doesn't need more VBlank time (the black bars you see in the SNES version) used to give the console more time to transfer tiles to VRAM, so in addition to showing more horizontal screen, it also does so vertically. Therefore, it is fair to accept and know why this type of games (beat em up) are much more bearable for the Mega Drive hardware, whether in 1988 or in 2024
@@specterRaven One thing is skill and another thing is the real capacity and limitation of each console. Let's say that instead of using 8x8 and 16x16 sprites on SNES we use 16x16 and 32x32 ones. Yes, we could see some more enemies. At what price? At the price of showing more flickering, at the price of taking up more space in VRAM, at the price of that space in VRAM being managed well enough so as not to have to sacrifice some animation, etc. Just because I'm telling the truth doesn't mean I'm a fan of one console or another, you can ask any programmer if SNES is capable of managing the same size, variety of tiles and transfer of graphic data for sprites with the same efficiency as MD does. SNES has its own capabilities for other types of tasks, but in this video you can see the real hardware differences between one and the other when it comes to showing a beat em up. Currently, we are working with all the knowledge available on SNES for some new games, and among them there are some beat em ups that still show the same limitations as 30 years ago: not too many enemies on screen and they depend on the size and variety of tiles that they have. This MD demo also shows MD's multiplexing capacity to show more than 80 sprites simultaneously, which is achieved when we see the snow.
The two-player option is always nice, but in this game having 2 'Batmans' makes it a bittersweet inclusion imo. Being able to be Robin, or another character from the series would be amazing.
This the batman returns we shouldve had on the genesis. Instead of grainy eysore and ear piercing original port. Imagine sega cd or cd 32x port with the driving stages.

The music is a poor sinthesized rendition of the AMAZING orchestrated SNES version... At least, the graphics and the colors are fine, so there's that...
